I bought this to convert a Sennheiser ME3 headset microphone to wired, phantom-powered use. It's a kind of expensive solution for that but it's the solution most likely to be plug-and-play and dependable. Plus its usefulness as a test tool for phantom-powered mic cables gives it the added value which (to me) made it a worthwhile investment.

As a mic interface the MZA900P works as advertised, and seems to be at least up to the sound quality level of the Sennheiser ME3 mic. There is a tiny bit of noise in the mic signal but I suspect that is due to the small-diaphragm mic element of the ME3, not due to the MZA900P circuitry. I do not have any other compatible and comparable mics handy to directly plug in and compare for noise levels.

Physically the adapter is compact and lighter than I expected. It is NOT heavy and clunky like a Shure inline mic transformer. So it clips nicely onto the performer's belt or clothing and seems willing to stay put. The spring-metal clip seems durable. A compatible Sennheiser mic will attach securely to it with the threaded collar built into the mic's plug. Depending on the performance situation that secure attachment feature could be critically important and valuable.

I left one star off my rating due to its relatively high purchase price. Other than that it seems to be a 5-star product.

Wanted to be able to use ME-2 miniature clip-on mics without having to set up a wireless scenario. Was an affordable solution. Would have been nice if it offered it's own 48v for use with portable recorders and camcorders not equipped with phantom power. B&H staff was great.

        Comments about Sennheiser MZA 900 P - In-Line Preamplifier:

I've owned one of these since I first got my Sennheiser G2 wireless kit. There are times when I don't want to deal with wireless glitches and I want the simplicity of a wired connection. I now own two of these and wouldn't go on a job without them.

          Comments about Sennheiser MZA 900 P - In-Line Preamplifier:

I shoot weddings with two two Sennheiser wireless G3 kits. I needed a way to do simple non-wedding interviews using the Sennheiser mikes. The MZA 900P is the perfect solution to adapt my camcorder's phantom power for these mikes. It is so small I leave it connected to my XLR cord and cary it with me in my camera bag. If I ever encounter radio interference I can't avoid by switching frequencies, I'll have a backup solution for weddings too.

I only gave this 4 stars because of the steep price. [$]. is a bit stiff, but it does give you universal use of the G2 and G3 wireless lavs.

                  Comments about Sennheiser MZA 900 P - In-Line Preamplifier:

I use this product for documentary/corporate interview shoots. I have the ME2 that came with the Sennheiser G2 wireless kit, and this works to convert the lavaliere into a wired lav. I have only used it over a three day shoot so far, but it was for 35 interviews, and it performed flawlessly. I also assume that the audio quality is better due to the fact that frequencies are not being cut off as they would be when used with a wireless transmitter. One issue is the placement of the preamp on the body. Once connected to an XLR cable, it can be quite long and inflexible, so when seated would not work so well clipped vertically on a belt. It works much better clipped horizontally or laying on the floor for a seated interview. Could be cheaper, but it is solidly built, and all in all a great little product. I also am able to fit it, along with some lav clips and the ME2 in the smallest Pelican Micro case.

                    Comments about Sennheiser MZA 900 P - In-Line Preamplifier:

This item gets the job done. It lets me go wired when I don't want to (or can't) go wireless.

I like the size of this item. Small enough to fit into the mic case, but not so small as to make handling difficult.

Easy to use, and (so far) trouble-free.

The only downside is the price. The price seems rather high for what it does. But ... as there seem to be very few alternatives on the market, that's how it goes.

I purchased the MZA-900 convert my Evolution-wired Countryman B3 microphones for hardwire use. The MZA-900 works a treat. All you need is Phantom power, 12V or 48V...

If you're using a mixer like a Sound Devices 302 the B3 (& the supplied Sennheiser ME2 microphone for that matter) will happily run on Phantom 12V; as apposed to 48V. I find that the mixer batteries are put under less pressure & last longer when running mics at 12V instead of 48V.

The MZA-900 is a tad expensive for what it is but far cheaper than purchasing an additional standalone hard-wired microphone. It also makes much more sense to have a dual-capability microphone (hardwire & wireless) as apposed to two separate mics. A worthwhile purchase.

This is a perfect little unit for Sennheiser mics which need phantom powering, especially for owners of wireless lav or instrument mic which let you turn them into wired lav or instrument mic. (or vice-versa)

Wanted to be able to use ME-2 miniature clip-on mics without having to set up a wireless scenario. Was an affordable solution. Would have been nice if it offered it's own 48v for use with portable recorders and camcorders not equipped with phantom power. B&H staff was great.

This simple item allows me to buy lav mics for only one connector style: Sennheiser wireless 3.5mm, as on the Evolution G2 100. I can then use the same mics with my wireless kit or as wired lavs. It's an enormous benefit. The preamp can even indicate some kinds of cable problems.
