Sigma's 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO-M DG Macro Lens is one of several tele-macro zoom lenses. It is a compact Apochromatic tele-macro zoom lens incorporating two Special Low Dispersion glass elements in the front lens group, plus one Special Low Dispersion glass element in the rear lens group, to minimize chromatic aberration.
This tele-macro zoom lens is capable of focusing down to 1:2 (half life-size) reproduction ratio at 300mm focal length. It also has a switch for changeover to macro photography at focal lengths between 200mm and 300mm. The lens materials used in this product are lead and arsenic free ecological glass.
The improved DG lens design corrects for various aberrations. This lens is specially coated to get the best color balance while cutting down on ghosting caused by reflections from the digital image sensor.

So, in a nutshell, its better then any Canon kit lens. But don't expect "L" glass quality here.
I got this used, (+9), build quality is decent. I like the finish Sigma uses. The lens switches feel a little cheap, the focus motor is quick, but its not a Canon USM lens.
AF and IQ are good on my 7D. I got this mainly for the macro function. Keep in mind, you'll need to be at least a good meter away from the subject when 200-300 macro mode is used.
The macro switch is tricky, at first I thought it was broken, but after READING THE DIRECTIONS, I learned that the lens must be manually focused back to infinity, and THEN you can switch the lens out of macro mode - and turn the zoom ring back past 200 (to 70).
I don't like the rotating front element, it reminds me of the feel of my cheap Canon 50mm f1.8. Only its smoother. But the AF will make the nose jump a little and "zip.. zip.. zip... zip.." around when locking on.
Tried out a few moon shots with a tripod, I was happy. Took a macro shot of my dog, I was happy.
While its not as solid feeling as my 70-200 Canon USM F4L, its actually got better reach, and the macro function is icing on the cake.
Since the 7D can shoot noise-free high ISO, the F5.6 is not a problem at all. Sharpness at the center is on par with my "L" glass, but the corners suffer a bit at the 300 end of the scale. Then again, this lens is half the price, and used, it was even less. Its lighter and more compact then the Canon 70-200.
This would make a great addition for sports or wildlife for a shooter with a modern body.
Its a nice plus that it comes with a padded carry bag, and a lens hood.

Good: Light solid build. Decent focus speed for price.
Bad: Not so sharp below 5.6. I first thought is was me, but then tested lens with tripod at different apertures. At 8.0 it was very sharp, but below that it was significantly less sharp. Wide open was relatively useless.
Recommend: To hobbyist.

Comments about Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro Lens for Canon EOS Cameras:
I am a pro photographer for a product distribution company, and I do a lot of action photography in addition to product shots. This lens is my go-to lens, and is especially great for tight-in shots during our action shoots. The auto-focus is very accurate. I love this lens so much that I actually just bought another one for my own personal use. Overall, a very good lens at a fraction of the cost of other comparable lenses!

I'm definitely an amateur photographer, but asked a pro for advice on which lens to buy, and where. He recommended your site as the most reliable and best price around -- and he was right! Shipped very quickly and the lens is exactly what I wanted!

I've bought a sigma 17-70 several months ago that labeled some of international prize.I'm pleasure with it.It has an efective i.s and 72mm lens diameter.Sure class is different and I'm planning to by this lens for power zoom usage. These reviews are very usefull for me.I think optic meterials universe is not so small. But simple truth to deal us is treking here with payment. If you pay to a lens around 1000 dolars and over you can sure to get a pure satisfy. But may be not so,because you paid a haigh value and critics gets high.First, any I.S can do as a tripod.A good shot need some efford everytime in any way.As I understand ıf you take a noticable sharpness and macro capability with 300 mm. at such a pricing we'll love our glasses on camera and tripod.

This lens delivers nice sharp images especially when used with a tripod. It's compact, lightweight and reasonably priced.
Image stabilization and weather sealed would be nice, but then the price would go up.
The lens turns when focusing making the use of a polarizing filter more difficult.

Comments about Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro Lens for Canon EOS Cameras:
Overall a very good lens for the price. As pointed out in other reviews, the focus is slower and not as sharp when using in lower light. But it works very well in brighter light and seems to be very well constructed with a good "solid" feel to it. I have not tried the macro function very much, but what I have, it seems to do a good job. The DOF does seem a little shallow though.
Overall, if you don't have the $$ to spend on a L-series lens, this lens is well worth the price.

Comments about Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro Lens for Canon EOS Cameras:
I have used this lens for Macro, shooting at night, portraits, everything. It delivers crisp, saturated color images. no fringing or highlight flare. Perfect blacks and white with details. Autofocus is fast and ultra accurate. You will love the reach at 300mm. I did a stupid thing and lost my camera with this lens on the mount. I am now going to upgrade to the Canon 60D and will be purchasing this lens AGAIN! I like it THAT MUCH@! Get it now! Ha Ha Ha you'll be laughing at those who didn't! BTW, I've dropped the camera numerous times and this lens keeps on ticking! (as did the camera from a 6 foot fall). There is nothing I don't like about this Sigma 70-300mm lens - except perhaps, that its subject to Lens creep so be careful if you have it on a tripod. Make sure the axis of the lens is right over and lined up with a tripod leg or it might unbalance the tripod with disastrous results. But that's such a minor thing given how well the lens delivers on all fronts, imho, its insignificant. I used a rubber band to insure again creep.

I am a photo enthusiast just starting to expand my hobby to the next level. I researched other zoom lenses and after extensive research I settled on the Sigma 70-300mm as the entry level zoom lense for me. I have used the lense a few times and am VERY pleased with the sharpness of the lense. For the price this is going to suit my needs for quite a while.

Comments about Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro Lens for Canon EOS Cameras:
I took this lens on the suggestion of one of my photographer friend, who took it while he was learning photography. I also appreciated the idea of using a cheaper lens while I am learning.
I mostly used it for shooting birds, and sunset from heights and moon.
It's a great lens for beginners to average skilled users.
The features work as described in the lens specifications and when compared to the price, the deal is very nice
I shot an entire album of common birds in my backyard and it came out pretty good. A moon shot from this lens has been superb too.
I also shot some portraits of friends from a distance of 10M and got superb bokeh
I was though disappointed by the absence of any optical stablizing mechanism, which should have been obvious to me.So night shots of distant objects were tricky because vibrations caused a lot of camera shake.
All in all, too good for its price range. Good deal Sigma!!

The lens thus far has been amazing. I am no professional but I have been able to effectively use the lens in many conditions to get some amazing shots. Not having image stabilization means using it at night or low light situations is nearly impossible without a tripod, but you get what you pay for.

I find myself consistently using this lens more than any other lens I have because it allows me to take nature shots and get candid close-up shots of people with great depth of field. It is a great fit with my DSLR. Although it does not have Image Stabilization it still gives me incredible shots of the eagles.
