The Hoya 52mm Ultraviolet (UV) Pro 1 Digital Filter is a wise initial investment. It helps protect your valuable investment from dust, moisture and scratches, which can lead to costly repairs.
Digital camera CCD or CMOS sensors are highly susceptible to reflections. This stray light can ruin your photographs with flare and ghosting. Hoya Digital Multi-Coating reduces any internal reflections, which means a clearer image with greater contrast.
A UV filter not only minimizes the bluish cast sometimes found under daylight conditions, but is also the best available protection against accidental damage to the front element of your lens. A lens that accidentally gets dropped on its front element while hiking can potentially be saved by purchasing this item. Some people refer to it as "cheap insurance".
As a lens protector, it should be left on at all times. Aside from that more-than-significant benefit, UV filters render your photos clearer, sharper and more contrasty. For those who enjoy outdoor photography, especially distant vistas, a UV filter can produce a more distinct and acceptable image by removing much of the blue tint normally associated with atmospheric haze.
The advantage of most Hoya filters is that Hoya puts, at least, one layer of anti-reflective coating on each side of their glass. It is not bare glass. I have been casually shooting around on my Nikon D40 and as I have gained more experience with it, I wanted to treat my camera better. One recommendation was getting a lens filter. I did my research, read some reviews and decided to go with the HOYA 52mm lens filter you are reading about here. I couldn't be happier with the results - it really helps my pictures out. The filter reduces the chance of minute rays getting in and otherwise ruining a great picture. It fits well and the pictures turn out nice. I am not, however, so well versed that I could give you a technical comparison between pics but I can tell that my pictures look less hazy.

I have used Hoya Filters for over forty years and always appreciate the quality of filters they make. This is a great filter to protect the investment you make with your camera lens. The thin metal ring design is excellent for digital cameras. There are cheaper filters out there, but why put a cheap filter on an expensive lens!! I remove the filter when doing outdoor night time photography.

Don't waste your money putting cheap glass in front of any good lens. All my Hoya filters have performed their job without fail and do not degrade the quality of the lens I put them on. I keep buying them for that reason.

I bought this filter several years ago for my Nikon 50mm 1.4 lens, and this weekend, the lens fell out of my bag and sailed straight onto concrete. A horrible smashing sound followed, and I was certain the lens was ruined. When I removed the lenscap, I saw the filter had shattered into a million pieces; I was certain the shards of broken glass had also scratched the lens, if it wasn't already cracked from the drop. On closer inspection, the filter left absolutely no scratch on the lens, and miracle upon miracles, my lens still works perfectly! I am buying a replacement for my lens ASAP--it's like having a personal bodyguard for each of my lenses. Do yourself a favor and insure all of your lenses with quality filters, as well, because you never know when one of yours will have the notion to take a swan-dive!
