Questions? Ask our experts:

The Hoya 72mm Ultraviolet (UV) Pro 1 Digital Filter is a wise initial investment. It helps protect your valuable investment from dust, moisture and scratches, which can lead to costly repairs.

Digital camera CCD or CMOS sensors are highly susceptible to reflections. This stray light can ruin your photographs with flare and ghosting. Hoya Digital Multi-Coating reduces any internal reflections, which means a clearer image with greater contrast.

A UV filter not only minimizes the bluish cast sometimes found under daylight conditions, but is also the best available protection against accidental damage to the front element of your lens. A lens that accidentally gets dropped on its front element while hiking can potentially be saved by purchasing this item. Some people refer to it as "cheap insurance".

As a lens protector, it should be left on at all times. Aside from that more-than-significant benefit, UV filters render your photos clearer, sharper and more contrasty. For those who enjoy outdoor photography, especially distant vistas, a UV filter can produce a more distinct and acceptable image by removing much of the blue tint normally associated with atmospheric haze.

The advantage of most Hoya filters is that Hoya puts, at least, one layer of anti-reflective coating on each side of their glass. It is not bare glass. Even if the glass is not multi-coated, this kind of production tends to minimize flare and ghosting. Digital Multi-Coating takes this protection to a higher level.

Hoya is one of the largest manufacturers of glass in the filter industry. In collaboration with its parent company, Tokina Optical, Hoya continues to strive to produce some of the best glass on the market. Currently, they hold 40% of the world's market for optical glass.

Note: Pro 1 Digital filters are ultra thin, but have a front thread

Digital Multi-Coated

Black Almite Frame
Filters feature a black matte aluminum, satin-finish almite frame, which reduces reflections
Black Rimmed Glass
These filters are equipped with black rimmed glass to reduce the chance of light reflecting off the edge
Low Profile Frame
Ultra-thin filter frames, which help to avoid vignetting on super wide angle lenses, are also designed to hold a lens cap
Knurling Edge Frame
These filters are equipped with a straight knurling edge for non-slip, easy attachment and removal
UV Protected Case
Filter cases are UV protected, which further lengthens the life of filters
If desired, it can be left on the lens at all times, for protection

I use the filter for two reasons: to protect my Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm lens and to enhance the images of my Nikon D70 camera.

The Hoya filter is superior to all the glass filters I've used in the past. The images have a richness and tonal quality unmatched by lesser filters.

Altho I believe the filter produces some benefits as a UV filter in cutting glare, I actually found that it degraded the image by a small amount. I tested the filter in a with and without scenario and found that the with images at 400 percent magnification had LESS resolution and that the filter 'blurred' detail. I wouldn't add a filter to a lens that compromises it's performance.

Comments about Hoya 72mm Ultraviolet (UV) Pro 1 Digital Filter:

I had the previous version of this filter for my Canon 18-200 lenz. Even though the camera attached to the lenz was in a protected sling bag, I heard the cracking noise when the bag dropped from 2 feet high chair. The filter actually prevented making damage on the lenz and only the filter was damaged... not the expensive lenz. Not only the filter helps to make good pictures, it also gives protection.

This is one of the better UV filters. I keep it on the lens all the time as I live in AZ where blowing dust is a problem. It also offers better UV filtering than the one on the sensor of my DLSR.

I use Hoya filters almost exclusively because of the quality of the glass and the coatings used to prevent glare or ghosts.Hoya has been the world's largest maker of optical glass for decades. Some of the worlds biggest lens makers including Canon, Nikon and Leica use Hoya glass when they dont make it themselves.Hoya are also the least expensive brand for most applications. Low cost - high quality. What more could you ask?

I bought this filter, because I had problems on the border of my pictures with the previous one. This one is thinner, therefore, more adequate for wide angle lenses. I use a 24 - 85 MM on my camera, and it worked perfectly.

Hoya filters are great accessories to protect front elements from drops and scratches . Even while pixel peeping, there's no significant deterioration in IQ. A carelessly dropped lens will cost 5x the amount to repair that this lens costs--this filter is good instance for when your camera is dropped or knocked over.

Comments about Hoya 72mm Ultraviolet (UV) Pro 1 Digital Filter:

I ordered this filter the same time that I ordered my new Sony a77. It went on the lens as soon as I took it out of the box. Hoya Pro 1 filters are extremely well manufactured and the optical qualities equal and compliment even the most expensive lenses on the market. The Pro 1 filters are some of the thinest you'll find and yet still have a front filter thread if you want to add a ND or polarizer at a later time. I have Hoya uv filters for every lens I own and consider them must have protection. The Pro 1 digital series offer the perfect combination of Multi coated optics, strength and thickness at a resonable price.

While Im not a professional photographer, this filter was recommended to me by one.
The filter came in good condition, clean and fit perfectly. I haven't shot many photos yet but with the little that I have, I have seen no negative effects.

Great lens' optic protection. Don't settle to some other cheap alternative especially if you wish to use it on a great and expensive lens. It does a good job in UV filtering than the one that I originally have as I often shoot against the light in the field.
