The Hoya 77mm Ultraviolet (UV) Pro 1 Digital Filter is a wise initial investment. It helps protect your valuable investment from dust, moisture and scratches, which can lead to costly repairs.

Digital camera CCD or CMOS sensors are highly susceptible to reflections. This stray light can ruin your photographs with flare and ghosting. Hoya Digital Multi-Coating reduces any internal reflections, which means a clearer image with greater contrast.

A UV filter not only minimizes the bluish cast sometimes found under daylight conditions, but is also the best available protection against accidental damage to the front element of your lens. A lens that accidentally gets dropped on its front element while hiking can potentially be saved by purchasing this item. Some people refer to it as "cheap insurance".

As a lens protector, it should be left on at all times. Aside from that more-than-significant benefit, UV filters render your photos clearer, sharper and more contrasty. For those who enjoy outdoor photography, especially distant vistas, a UV filter can produce a more distinct and acceptable image by removing much of the blue tint normally associated with atmospheric haze.

The advantage of most Hoya filters is that Hoya puts, at least, one layer of anti-reflective coating on each side of their glass. It is not bare glass. Even if the glass is not multi-coated, this kind of production tends to minimize flare and ghosting. Digital Multi-Coating takes this protection to a higher level.

Hoya is one of the largest manufacturers of glass in the filter industry. In collaboration with its parent company, Tokina Optical, Hoya continues to strive to produce some of the best glass on the market. Currently, they hold 40% of the world's market for optical glass.

Note! Pro 1 Digital filters are ultra thin, but have a front thread

Worst filter ever. I thought my photo's were looking off and so started experimenting with and without filter. With this filter picture consistently was soft compared to without. Even colors were affected, they looked weak. Lens I tested this on was 70-200L IS F2.8 Mark II. Buy the Hoya UV(0) HMC Super Multicoated, you'll be much happier and its cheaper.

I use it to protect a tele zoom's front element without interfering with the optical properties of the lens.

The original equipment lens cap fits on this filter, a plus.

Hoya could use some decent filter cases, like the ones B&W offers with their filters. They are much handier and more durable in the field.

I recently purchased a Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 as my everyday lens and I make it a point to never go anywhere without a filter to protect my lenses. The Hoya brand is top quality and everything I need in a basic filter for shooting family outings, sporting events, and school affairs.

I use Hoya Pro 1 Digital UV filters on all of my Nikon and Tokina, AF-D type lenses that lack the modern coatings that resist flare and internal reflections off of the sensor. These filters work as advertised! If you use a designed-for-film lens on your DSLR, you want this UV filter. This 77mm found a home on the original version of the Tokina AT-X Pro DX 11-16mm. Beautiful color and contrast now and helps cut through the haze.

Comments about Hoya 77mm Ultraviolet (UV) Pro 1 Digital Filter:

I bought this filter as protection for my lens and it is an excellent buy. Its not too expensive, but still professional quality. It is lightweight, robust and has a low profile to it which sleek and cool. I really do not like the font on this particular filter although that has nothing to do with performance and I am satisfied with the other fonts on my other hoya filters.

Comments about Hoya 77mm Ultraviolet (UV) Pro 1 Digital Filter:

I did a lot of research once I got a high end lens. I needed something to complete a weather seal on an L. The Hoya Pro 1 ranked 2nd in a cost / effect test when the filter cost $[$] USD. When I saw the B&H price for this filter, it was a no brainer. Its all they say it is. Put it on and forget about it forever. I will never need to give it another thought after writing this review. It seems invisible to my sensor and photo's.

Comments about Hoya 77mm Ultraviolet (UV) Pro 1 Digital Filter:

It looks and feels like a good filter. I haven't had it for too long so I can't really comment on how easy it is to clean or how durable it is. After a few quick comparisons with and without the filter, I can't tell much of a difference, and that's a good thing. And it is labeled as UV(O) which is better than Hoya's UV(C) which is cheaper and lower quality/durability. which, if I vaguely remember, means the UV effect is mostly in the glass (O for optical?) as apposed to the effect being mostly in the coating (C for coating?); though fundamentally regular glass does block a bit of UV light, so the O or C marker could mean something completely different.
