Formatt Graduated Neutral Density HD Filters enable the shooter to adjust exposure without affecting color balance. Exposure can be increased by 1, 2, 3 or 4 stops to suit individual situations.

Often it is necessary or desirable to balance the light intensity in one part of a scene with another. This is especially true in situations where you don't have total light control, as in bright contrasty landscapes. Exposing for the foreground will produce a washed-out, over-exposed sky while exposing for the sky will leave the foreground dark and under-exposed. This filter enables cloud detail to be kept correctly exposed in the picture.

Soft/hard indicates the degree of transition.

A standard set of ND's is 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 and 1.2. This represents 1 to 4 stops of light reduction 1

Neutral Density Filters Have Four Main Uses

To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed films, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situations
To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure

Neutral Density Factors

ND.3 (exposure adjustment = 1 stop, reduces ISO 1/2)
ND.6 (exposure adjustment = 2 stops, reduces ISO 1/4)
ND.9 (exposure adjustment = 3 stops, reduces ISO 1/8)
ND1.2 (exposure adjustment = 4 stops, reduces ISO 1/16)

Formatt Grads are Available in Four Types

Soft Edge - Half clear, half colored with a smooth transition to full density. Generally used with medium to wide angle lenses
Hard Edge - Half clear, half colored with a definite less subtle transition. For use with long focal length lenses
Razor Edge - As hard edge but with a solid transition line for shooting corners of buildings, knife-edge horizons or when a very bold transition is required
Blender - The grad line is right at one edge of the filter so the color change runs from top to bottom. Perfect for irregular objects and skylines

We do landscape photography and this works just as described. It helped with the clouds and gave us some better detail in the clouds. Much of our intent is longer exposures and we will probably look for something with higher stops, but will gladly stick with this company. Price was good and the quality as described.

It feels solid but I noticed it causes dark corners on wide end. I used it on a 15-35mm Nikkor. And it just doesn't prevent the sky from exploding in your photo. And that sky I'm talking about doesn't have any sun in it. Original casing is not usable in long term. You'll need a filter pouch.

This is my second ND Grad filter. Unlike my other the tinting seems to only effect the top third. Certainly makes a difference in darkening the skylines. A must have for shooting commercial real estate.

I use this filter with SonyEX1&EX3 camcorder as well as Canon 70D with Sigma 17-50mm 2.8f lens. Initially I wanted to buy Tiffen (I already own Tiffen .6 soft edge ND) but Formatt was more affordable option. Quality of glass is very good plus you get front and back screwing threads for more combinations.

Comments about Formatt Hitech 77mm Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 1.2 Filter:

I bought this filter for shooting fireworks this year. Fireworks, you say? That's right! I needed an extra heavy ND grad filter to keep the exposure of the fireworks in top of the frame from overexposing while I exposed the bottom of the frame correctly for the very dimly lit boats in the harbor under the fireworks. The 1.2 ND cuts the light by 4 stops and that was exactly what I needed! I wasn't sure about the Formatt brand but the build quality and the glass seem fine.

Works very well to make the sky pop especially on cloudy days. I have other graduated neutral density filters but none give me the f.stop factor I need to really make a difference.
The filter was in need of cleaning when I opened the box and it does not come with a suitable case. This filter does vignette on 20 mm or wider lenses.

After having used this filter for several winter time landscapes I'm very pleased with the results. 4 stops make a big difference on whether or not you'll blow out the highlights in your shot. Used correctly the subtle textures of clouds can be retained in your shot. Snowy mountain backgrounds with clouds also turn out very decent without losing the exposure in the foreground. Again, as with any other camera or accessory, you must use it correctly to realize the proper results. It was very well worth the purchase price.

After cleaning the filter does just what I expected it to do.

Comments about Formatt Hitech 77mm Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 1.2 Filter:

I'm using this Graduated ND filter with my Voigtlander 25mm f/0.95 lens on a Panasonic GH2. I'm mostly interested in shooting video, not stills. I got the 77mm size and an adapter ring to step down to the 52mm threads of my lens.

I chose the 1.2 ND filter to make sure I protected the exposure of the skies in the footage I take. With video, the dynamic range isn't as great as with still photography, so proper exposure for skies is crucial when shooting landscapes. This filter helps a lot.

The only downside is that, since the front element of the filter rotates (as it should) to adjust where you want the gradient in the frame, it becomes a bit difficult to unscrew the filter from the 77mm-52mm adapter ring. Other than that, it works extremely well.

Comments about Formatt Hitech 77mm Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 1.2 Filter:

This filter is a godsend. I regularly blew highlights in the sky on images taken at dusk even with a 2 stop grad. No more. With the formatt I can exposed for shadows in the foreground and still main hightlights. Great product and solid construction.

I've been searching for a 1.2 soft grad in 77mm and this was my second choice after Tiffen HT which was not available , but I'm glad I bought this filter ,works great on Nikon 16-35 from 18mm on FX and overall fine on DX frame and Nikon 24-70

Comments about Formatt Hitech 77mm Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 1.2 Filter:

I bought this ND 1.2 filter to compliment the B+W ND 0.6 graduated neutral density filter than I already own.

It's considerably thicker than the B+W 0.6 and lacks front screw threads so more filters cannot be stacked on top of this. You will need a push-on lens cap if you keep the filter on your lens. The Formatt filter rotates smoothly, and thanks to the dark gradient plus a couple of notches on the edges of the front at either side of the gradient divide, is easy to align either through the viewfinder or by visual inspection. The rotating element is considerably thicker than the non-rotating part and it is difficult to get a grip on the thin element to remove the filter. I needed a plastic filter wrench to get it off.

Optically it performs well and does allow a dark foreground to be made more visible in relation to a bright sky.

Comments about Formatt Hitech 77mm Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 1.2 Filter:

ive been looking for a graduated ND filter that is darker than a .6 or 2 stops. coudnt find any except Formatt ones. 1.2 sounds dark but it works just fine. contruction is good and i get the right shading for bright shots. Formatt is a British comany and i had to look up and do research on them. i feel pretty confident about the company and the manufacturing process based on their website. the only negative is that there is a metal bar that sticks out from the filter itself. i suppose it is suppose to make it easier to move the filter to the right plane for the graduated neutral density part. totally not needed. just looks funny and sticks out. thinking of getting a dremmel and cutting it off. besides that i am VERY happy with the results from this filter. was reluctant to purchase as no reviews at all but i am glad i took the risk.

I get a lot of shots where the sky has equal importance as the ground, so this filter helps me acquire a good image of both. The soft transition helps with an irregular horizon.
