I bought this to get the best of both worlds, telephoto and macro. I haven't been disappointed! Macro is as easy to use as pushing a switch. It must be in the 200-300 mm range for this and works best on manual focus. In macro setting, Auto focus it hunts too much to really zoom in on ones subject, but It takes really great macros. Used it telephoto at a rodeo event and got really good close up shots of the action. Auto focus works great, though when shooting birds in trees, might want to use manual focus if branches or twigs are in front of bird as they will be clear, and bird in background will be blurry.I have even taken indoor shots of pets and it works good, but have to have some distance between you and the subject. There is really nothing about it I don't like. Its light enough to hand hold even at the 300 mm length, although for night shots I would recommend a tripod. Comparable to more expensive lens making it a good buy for beginners.

This lens seems to work well but most photos are overexposed with the Pentax K110D. Set the expose .5 to 1 stop darker. Focus is inconsistent but with multishot setting, 1 of 3 appears in focus. Not all features of the K110D work with the lens. When using anything other than auto or program mode, attempting to reach the F Stop is difficult due to the design of the Pentax lens cover. But, overall, not a bad lens. But, if you need all features of the camera stay with the 50 - 200 Pentax lens. I have both and will probably not use this lens very often.

A very good general purpose lens. The added focal length is a great improvement over the more common 70-200mm lens. The compact design is a great bonus for use in a smaller equipment bag.

Comments about Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG Macro Lens for Pentax AF:

Granted, I have not had a chance to compare this with other lenses other than an older model advanced point and shoot, but after taking many pictures with it over the past few months and reading reviews, here are my observations:

Auto focus works best in normal light. It may be "noisy," but its usually pretty quick and focuses on the main subject about 19 times out of 20. Sometimes the lens just goofs, and I don't know why.

I have taken pictures of smaller birds and other wildlife which requires maneuvering in low light and in areas with tiny branches and leaves. I find that I have to switch to manual focus since the lens either hunts or the camera does not know what to focus on and I end up getting a good picture of a twig with a blurry bird in the background. I am not sure this could be avoided regardless of whether it is the lens or the camera just because of the size of the conditions. I don't mind using manual focus, so this isn't a problem.

It is also very precise on what object is to be focused upon. Again, that might have something to do with the settings of the camera (by choosing a setting for fast objects vs. landscape), but something that is just a couple of inches behind the object you are focusing upon will be slightly out of focus sometimes.

I have read 1 and 2 star reviews on another website. However, that is a bit misleading if you are buying this for a Pentax camera since that particular website lumped in the reviews of the Pentax version with other manufacturers. The people with other brands of cameras complained of blurriness. However, Pentax comes with in-camera stabilization while other brands are located within the lens. Since this doesn't have an in-lens stabilization feature, then you are obviously going to have problems when not using a tripod.

I bought this for my dad who recently got a Pentax K-7. His house backs up to the woods, so I thought he might like a lens with some reach to get pictures of the wildlife. We played around with it a bit and it looks pretty good to my eye for the price. Not as sharp as my Nikon 70-300VR, but for the price, it takes a pretty decent shot.

Comments about Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG Macro Lens for Pentax AF:

I'm an animal photographer (mostly at zoo's) and landscapes and some portrait work.

I bought this to go with the Pentax K-x I bought just a week or 2 ago. I could have bought the Pentax kit with the K-x and the 18-55 and their 70-300, but I bought this lens instead for the following reasons:

                              1) The Pentax lens only goes to about 1/3.3 lifesize. I like to take flower pictures from time to time...that's not close enough for me. The Sigma goes to 1/2 lifesize...at the longer focal lengths. That's a big plus with things like butterflies.
                              2) I saved about $20 over the Pentax K-x w/ 18-55 and 70-300 zoom combo.
                              3) I like the bayonet on lens hood..you can use filters without a big hassle
                              4) I really like the matt black finish on the lens. Very sharp looking.

                              Things I don't like:
                              1) The normal/macro focus switch needs to be a bit bigger-about an 1/8 higher would be good.
                              2) If you're going to sell the lens with a bayonet on lens hood that only you make, put a model # on the hood so I can write it down and order another if I lose this one.

Overall, I'd say this lens is a really good value.

Comments about Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG Macro Lens for Pentax AF:

I currently use this lens as my normal wildlife/naturetelephoto lens on my *ist DL. I usually get very goodresults with it until some small branches are in theforeground. Bokeh quality isn't always horrible, butsometimes it surprises me with horrible bokeh. Very rarelyhave I seen any chromatic aberrations, which is always aplus. Sometimes a green halo appears when scenes get verycontrasty. Autofocus is mediocre...when shooting throughtrees it searches a lot, as there are so many branches tofocus on. Even not shooting into trees, it tends to searchsome. It's also really light, so it doesn't even need atripod mount. Easy to carry on long trips. Great value, too! I got mine used for $120.If you currently have only a kit (18-55) lens and you wantto extend your capabilities with this lens, go for it. It'll most likely be worth it. This is the first lens Ibought after the 18-55. I have had this lens for about ayear and a half now, and I've grown out of it. It was mybest friend for about half a year, then it was just anotherlens, and now that I've learned so much and expanded mycapabilities, I feel like I've grown out of it. After all,at 300mm, it is only f/5.6, and its quality is somewhatsharp. It's reasonably sharp. Not like some of my other50mm's. But don't get me wrong, for $100-$140, it'scompletely worth it if you're just expanding your range. On the other hand, if you are only intending on using thislens for wildlife or just for the long reach, get a fixed300mm (or higher!). You will find that f/stops will getfaster and quality will get better. Even old Pentax 300/4screw mount lenses or old k-mount lenses (before autofocus)are likely going to bet better image quality than this. Butit is also likely that you'll pay more for a fixed 300mm.The verdict? If you're on a budget looking to expand your reach with anew telephoto lens and superior quality isn't a major factoryet, this lens is for you.

Problems Encountered: AF hunts a little bit sometimesLike previous reviews say, sometimes the exposure is wayoff. Setting exposure comp. up or down a little bit helps, but I find that, shooting outdoors, using Manual mode isbest and most accurate.
