The EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens from Canon is a relatively light telephoto zoom lens offering a broad range of focal lengths from a single optic, with good optical quality and excellent autofocus performance from its ultrasonic (USM) motor. It has a circular aperture diaphragm to help create natural out-of-focus highlights, and its built-in image stabilizer allows you to handhold the lens at shutter speeds 3 steps slower than would otherwise be possible. This enables sharp imaging when shooting at telephoto lengths and even when shooting in low light. The two-mode stabilizer can be activated to only correct shake in the vertical axis for panning action when desired as well.

The lens' USM AF is very quick, smooth and silent, and it features a zoom lock button that keeps the lens safe and secure when not in use or when being used at the shortest 70mm focal length setting. The EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 has Canon's "Super Spectra" lens coatings for ideal flare-resistance, and is ideal for travel, sports, and general photographic applications.

A versatile telephoto zoom lens for both film and digital cameras, it provides a wide focal range that can encompass portraiture and of course magnify distant subjects. When used on an APS-C format camera, its equivalent focal length range is 112-480mm.
Two-mode optical image stabilization compensates for camera shake and enables shutter speeds 3-steps slower than would otherwise be possible without incurring image blur. Mode 2 is best used when tracking a moving subject.
An ultrasonic autofocus motor (USM) provides fast and silent AF action.
UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) lens element reduces secondary spectrum aberration.
Circular aperture diaphragm for natural-looking out of focus highlights
Canon Super Spectra lens coatings to suppress flare and ghosting
Zoom ring lock keeps zoom at 70mm and prevents lens 'creeping' during movement or even while shooting.

I purchased this lens along with my Canon 6D + 24-105 kit. I've posted a review of that as well. It had an instant rebate making it a real great deal. I use this lens with no filter but bought a lens hood for protection. I shoot a lot of my kids indoor sports and this lens is amazing. To me it feels sturdy and has no lens creep. I rarely if ever get out of focus pics. I've compared my pics with ones taken with the EF 70-200 2.8 at the same indoor sporting events. While the bokeh of the 2.8 is superior, overall picture quality of my pics are better due to high ISO capability of my 6D over the other guy's 7D. Plus I like to have a little crowd reation in my shots. The image stabalization is pretty good but I always use a monopod unless in dayligt. This is my go to lens. This lens also has the reach I need. With a full frame camera 300mm is a must for sports. I would have to get the Sigma 120-300 2.8 at 10x what I paid for this one to achieve better results, "2.8", without having to crop. But then again, I use this lens a lot between 70mm and 120mm plus that Sigma is a monster that would be a pain to lug around all day. So for now f4/5.6 is just fine with the 6D. This lens may have some flaws in technical tests but in the real world it's pictures look fantastic.

I have some very nice Canon lenses. This is not my favorite and it is rarely used.

While most of my Canon lenses are sharp at the end of their min/max capabilities, this one is SOFT when fully extended to get that 300mm. The loss of sharpness is very visible to me and has frustrated me often. I get better 300m clarity on my teens point and shoot.

To be fair, it is a really decent lens in the mid ranges if you don't have already have one. That is why I wish I could give it a 3.5 rating. I have learned to zoom all the way out then pull back on important shots. If it is something I am sharing ONLY on line (Wunderground, Flickr etc) and print quality is not that important, I will go the full 300mm, reduce and sharpen it in PS.

I would recommend it to: someone who can't afford L Series; someone who doesn't need the full 275-300mm for large quality prints; and to someone who needs it for sports snap shots.

I would not recommend it to: someone who is seeking to look up the nostrils of wildlife from afar; or someone who will be making 11x14 of said wildlife zoomed shots for entry in professional class competitions. Save up and get the L series instead.

I've been using this lens for wildlife photography and have zero complaints. It is not as sharp as the 70-200 L lenses but I do this for fun and have yet to feel like l wish I had spent more on a better tele zoom. I don't think pro's would consider this lens but for enthusiasts like me, it's the perfect mix of performance, size, and price. Plus it's black so you you aren't screaming "I'm rich!" when photographing in lesser developed nations.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens:

I purchased this lens for the extra focal length to use specifically at cross country as well as track and field events. The photos it yielded have won places in the hearts of the athletes and their parents. As an extra bonus, the lens opened up new possibilities for wildlife and macro shots. I did not downgrade for the lens creep because if no one had mentioned, it really would not have bothered me. Locked down at 70 mm, the lens makes a decent portrait lens and a general purpose lens for public events.

For the first few months after buying my Canon Rebel T3i DSLR, I only used the included lens kit (18-55mm). I am so glad that I spent the extra money to get this lens with the image stabilization as carrying around a tripod to get certain shots is inconvenient. I took shots at a friends wedding with this lens, and the pictures were stunning. This lens however is heavy and feels fragile.

I bought a kit that included this lens with a T2i body, my first adventure in the DSLR world. It's given me a taste of what the higher-end lenses have to offer. The auto-focus is quick and definitive, image stabilization enabled me to start taking solid photos right out of the box. Mode II works well for tracking subjects against a busy background, for example a bicycle race.

The build seems a little light in some respects but the lens functions well. I'd like to get a zoom that has a consistent aperture throughout the focal length range, but I know that's going to cost some money.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens:

I am generally conservative about lens ratings. This lens is a tremendous value and darn good QC when used properly. I bought a refurb from B&H and as usual it arrived in super condition. A couple of caveats: Don't expect this lens to excel at 300MM. It won't. I also have a 300MM f/4.0 and use them both together -- the 300 at the long end and the zoom in the middle of the range. The combination is super. My combo was about the same price as a new 100-400 and much better optics. Second caveat: this was my 2nd copy. I bought an earlier version from another supplier and returned it as being too soft. There may be a little more variability with QC with the zoom, but this copy from B&H rocks. In the low to mid 200MM range it is every bit as good as the fixed 300mm 4.0, especially when backing off the aperture to 6.3. don't expect it to behave exactly like the l lens (it is not nearly as durable), but for the price it is my favorite lens and I have 2 L class lens. Contrast and color with the 70-300 are excellent. Weight and zoom feature are so convenient. I use them both for bird photography. P.s. I also own the Tamron 70-300 IS zoom and as respectable as the Tamron is, it now sits in the closet. Color is more accurate with the Canon.

This lens is built strong. Heavier then my other lens. Good quality photos.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens:

I purchased this lens, on deal, along with a Canon 6D body. I had it once before and sold it. I got it for the IS and a little extra reach and because Ken Rockwell raves about it in his review. I have the Canon 70-200mm L f4 (without IS), which becomes a 98-280mm with the Canon tele extender and an IS of sorts with a mono-pod. Since I did not want to carry both on my frequent trips to Spain (and I can only carry one or the other for daily shoots, when I am not in a car), I have been researching for days about whether to buy the Canon 70-300mm L f4.5 - 5.6, which would get me about 20mm reach on each end, give me L glass and IS, but stick me with a heftly tab. I would sell both lenses to purchase this expensive glass. This morning I called B&H and talked to one of their people, who ran me through the options and basically advised me to stay with what I have, since he thinks highly of the Canon 70-200mm f4, tele extender combo. I still may sell this lens, but not because I am unhappy with it. I did some side by side shots this weekend with this lens and the 70-200ml and realized that you can max out the 70-300mm lens by shooting in RAW, which compares favorably with the 70-200mm shot in JPEG (Large). If you cannot afford the L version, I think you will be happy with this lens at this price if you do indeed shoot in RAW with it. It is not a full pro lense, but it doesn't carry the Pro tab either.

I purchased this lenses because of a canon promo on the price. Expecting to compare it to my other lense of similar size, I was shocked at the speed of focus and the clarity. We did a side by side and instantly saw the color was richer and much sharper. A good lense for the cost.
