Comments about JBL L890 Studio L Series 4-Way Dual 8" Floor-standing Speaker (Black):

I use these speakers in my Yamaha based system to listen to SACD's in multichannel as well as DVD-Audio discs. I also enjoy them when playing my Oppo 103 blu ray player. The DTS HD audio sounds fantastic.

Comments about JBL L890 Studio L Series 4-Way Dual 8" Floor-standing Speaker (Black):

I've owned a smaller set of JBL's for my living room for several years. Love them. So when it came time to replace my 15 year old Cerwin Vega's that were part of my "Man Cave" home theatre, I thought, why not JBL's again. Only hooked them up a few days ago. But so far, they sound great. Super price, fast delivery, what more can you ask for!

Comments about JBL L890 Studio L Series 4-Way Dual 8" Floor-standing Speaker (Black):

My testing tools include my ears and my judgement as to how much of the hype I pay attention to thats available about any particular product. In audiophilia there is an exhaustive amount of info to discern. Here was my process:
        1. I use realistic budget concerns...what I would spend.Objective
        2. listening;i.e....comparing to current reference(what I own) speakers(JBL L830's,LC312 and DCMdx27's ... Objective and Subjective(Obj/Subj)
        3. what I was considering and could audition: Polk Ti6 and 7's;Tsi400&500;PSB ImageT6;B&W853/854;Cantons and Boston Acoustics 300 series...(Obj/Subj)and
        4.read about several others...Obj/subj
        Process took about 3 months
The overwhelming winner was not what I choose in the end. If I listened to the reviews the L890's would not have made the top of the list... the PSBs or B&Ws would. The PSB dealer only had the Imagine series in to audition not the T6 and the Polks or B&W didn't really out "wow" the warmth, tonal balance and soundstage of my L830 bookshelf pair even. The Imagine bookshelf set they did have in the store were on par with myL830s and maybe a little better but at twice the price it wasn't enough. I knew the timbre would be different if I changed brands and I objectively wanted a set to pair with my L830s and Denon 2311 AVR for home theatre and dedicated use for stereo music listening without having to use a sub...they do that well. The JBL's are essentially a 4way set of L830's 9with bigger woofers).Folks size matters when it comes to bass response. these could be tighter in the mid to low range but are fine in low range. They are speced down to 28Hz.... but anything else out there only had at best 6.5 woofers except Polks ..again at more money. The choice became clear. Yes I was overwhelmed by the size of the speakers and they overpowered my room (only 14x16x8)when I first set them up. I had to tune them down some in the treble brightness(I have a high frequency hearing loss anyway so I am still playing with it because of this)and place about 12-18inches from wall and next to DVDshelves. I did read one review from Soundstage that dogged them when set up using separates but graciously ended with a positive statement(I'm sure he wants to get more speakers to review). I still consider that a subjective take. My wife, our friends and my buddy the music producer all concur. They are SWEET.
I wasn't happy with the holes in the boxes when I unpacked them...maybe a shipping problem. They looked like they may have sat in the warehouse for awhile. New should look NEW inside and out. They aren't as upscale looking as the B&W or PSB T6. I think the silver trim on black distracts so I wear the grills. I wanted black because of my furniture but the cherry like my L830 set looks better. I would have preferred a darker cherry off either. The grills are cheap plastic but a lot of this is what a big company(Harman) can and will do and can still give us good stuff. Bose gets away with that but JBL speakers today continue their solid tradition I was used to; Bose does not. I also don't have high end cables and conductors but plan on upgrading and I expect that I only have positives to look forward to when I do and there may not be a need to spend any more on the speakers.
Bottom line these L890 will be around for many years to come cause they are a fit for me until I am ready to get into a higher end market which may never happen.
