Sigma 15mm f/2.8 EX DG Diagonal Fisheye Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS USA

Product Highlights
  • For Canon EF Mount Cameras

The Sigma 15mm f/2.8 EX DG Diagonal Fisheye is a full-frame fisheye auto focus lens that fills the entire 35mm negative with a full 180 degree diagonal field of view. This unique autofocus lens enables you to create a variety of unusual compositions even when shooting ordinary subjects.

The improved DG lens coating reduces flare and ghosting, which is a common problem of digital cameras, and also creates an optimum color balance.

Since most Digital SLR cameras use a smaller image sensor size (APS-C) than 35mm film cameras, 180 degree angle-of-view can not be obtained with Digital SLR cameras. With those cameras only the center part of the frame is used, therefore, peripheral distortion will be very small.

The super wide angle of this lens makes it ideal for use with digital SLR cameras, providing a focal view of approximately 23mm.

Accepts removable gelatin filters in a holder near the rear of the lens
Optical material used in this new lens are lead and arsenic free ecological glass

I have had this lens for about 5-6 years, and it doesn't come out of the bag often, but when it does, everyone is stunned by the results. We are so used to seeing only 30-50 degrees of view that when you open it up to 180, it is like a whole new world. A lot of people use these for funky landscapes and architecture, but I love using them for candid portraiture/news shots. I once used this to walk through a protest rally in Kathmandu, and the results were stunning. I had to get close, and I mean REALLY CLOSE, as in inside the crowd and within 2 feet of their faces, but with me actually ducking under the protest banners in the middle of the parade, I got some unbelievable shots. There is something about capturing the entire surroundings that tells a very vibrant story. As far as this particular fisheye goes, I like it, and I was pretty sceptical about buying another Sigma lens after being burned by a cheap on back in about '95. This one is quality. The lens cap is a metal barrel and the hood is fixed because the lens actually convexes out from the bezel (hence the need for drop-in rear filters). It feels solid and tightly constructed. All metal lens barrel and a nice coating on the optics (but I think it has been updated since I bought mine). The AF is slow, so don't expect it to perform like your L lenses--but it's a specialty tool. This is a lot more useful than a circular fisheye while still getting almost 180 degrees horizontally and nearly that vertically. There is no sense in talking about spherical aberration, other than you have a TON of it--but that is the fun of a fisheye. There is some chromatic aberration, but again, you have to accept the limitations of this type of tool. You get decent sharpness, but this is certainly not a portrait lens. It might seem like a toy that is hard to justify, but once you have it, you will be amazed at the number of circumstances that it seems like nothing else will do. Have fun--just don't overdo it.My only tip with fisheye: GET CLOSE! See what it looks like to take a portrait from 3 inches(!) from your subject's face just off center--lots of fun and you will improve your composition with your other shots with what you learn with this lens.

Problems Encountered: Never seems to make it in my bag when I only choose two lenses, but always makes it when I choose three. I always worry that I will scratch the coating on the front, since it sticks out from the bezel--although I never have.

Previous Equivalent Items Owned: Tested a similar spherical and the choice was obvious, this is way more versitile.

Items I Recommend: I shoot an EOS 3 with the booster pack

Started shooting with it and noticed that the image wasn't sharp at the center focus point not to mention the rest of the image. Did a tripod test and compared it to my Canon 17-40mm f4L and the Sigma failed miserably. But I'll give it another go and ask for another copy and hope for the best.

Comments about Sigma 15mm f/2.8 EX DG Diagonal Fisheye Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS:

I bought this lens for a few special purpose opportunities and find myself taking it with me everytime I take my camera out. It provides a unique look at the world, often that world being a place you can only see through the lens. It is excellent for turning what appears an average looking shot into something unique and often stunning. It is especially good indoors where the F2.8 can really open up opportunities. I recently visited my hometown and was walking around taking regular pics of what has changed when the manager of the theatre asked me if I'd like to take some pics inside. The building is well over 100 years old, and I grew up watching movies there. I had this lens with me and gave it its first opportunity. When I went in the lighting was poor so I cranked up the ISO on my 6D and ended up with some really cool shots of the unique, old, ornate interior. Ever since I've taken it everywhere. A balloon fest, street fair, inside old buildings, a car show; it's always in my bag. I haven't had a chance to do much close up work yet, but I am sure that is where I will really be pleased. The image quality is fantastic, but better atF4 than F2.8. If you are looking to do portraits this insn't your lens, but if you have a creative side and like to have fun with your photography, this lens is a great way to break tradition and get some unique shots.

I am a professional photographer full time 30yrs and bought this lens for a family wedding to play with and ended up using it for 70% of reception. It was great for the wild shots and gave a different view not normally seen with background lights of different color temp. Easy to work on a crowded dance floor. Used on my 5D mk3 had some barrel effect but make a rather dark party place look massive and bright. Very sharp for the price... I would do it again. auto focus was much faster than mine....

Comments about Sigma 15mm f/2.8 EX DG Diagonal Fisheye Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS:

I am a professional wedding and stock photographer (architecture and travel) and bought this lens to use with my Canon 5D Mark III. I used to have a Tokina 10-17mm Fisheye, but the Tokina is soft on the borders when used with a Full Frame camera (very soft). The Sigma 15mm is tack sharp in the center and very good on the borders. I read in the reviews when I was searching for a fisheye designed for full frame cameras that this Sigma 15mm has a slow autofocus. Well, I do not agree. The autofocus is fast enough for the kind of job I get (weddings and architecture). Maybe for sports, the autofocus will not be up to the challenge. The construction is very good except for the lens cap. Actually, the cap has two stages: a cylinder and the lid itself. The set is too loose and falls off easily. I strap them to the lens via a couple of rubber bands otherwise they can easily go off the lens in the camera bag. The imagens produced by this lens is top notch. Canon has a very expensive new fisheye lens (Canon 8-15mm F/2.8 Fisheye) and an old version (Canon 15mm F/2.8 Fisheye). The old version is sold for the same prince as a brand new Sigma 15mm F/2.8 fisheye and the new version is far too much expensive. I do not see any point in buying the canon's fisheye lenses. As I said before, the new Canon 8-15mm F/2.8 Fisheye lens is far too much expensive and the second one is only found used and selling for the price of a brand new Sigma! (nonsense)... The Sigma 15mm fisheye is a F/2.8 fixed aperture lens what is a big plus when photographing weddings in a very low light reception place. The sigma has also less chromatic aberration compared to the Tokina I used to have before...I recommend this lens.

I already use a Canon 17-40 mm lens on Canon 5d III but to go even wider, the Sigma 15 mm was needed. A well made solid lens. Noisy, slow focus but this is not an issue with how the lens is typically used. Images at f8 and f11 are very sharp. Yes lots of distortion but it is a 180 degree view lens on a full frame body. Amazing depth of field particularly at f16 and f22. The front of the lens rotates during focusing so you need to keep the hand away or you will cause major mischief with the focus motor. Useful for building interiors and for panoramas.

Half the price of the Canon L zoom equivalent.

I purchased this lens to use it specifically for skateboardng photos and video. The fisheye effect it provides is hard to reach with a different lens range. And it allows you to get really close to the subject, without having any part of the subject's body out from the composition.

Purchased this lens due to price and great reviews on this board. First non-canon lens I've owned. Took it out this past Sunday afternoon to shoot some spring daffodils and lake scenes. Much to learn but I think this will be fun to use at ballgames and for athlete portraits. Very fast focus and quiet.

Comments about Sigma 15mm f/2.8 EX DG Diagonal Fisheye Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS:

Nice lens. Very nicely made, a little noisy , It takes about a second to auto focus.Focus not a real problem any thing more than 5 feet away is at infinity anyway. Can do some interesting things with rear film filter holder.

Comments about Sigma 15mm f/2.8 EX DG Diagonal Fisheye Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS:

I can't believe I've waited so long to buy this lens. I rented the Canon 15mm fisheye before, and the Sigma performs exactly the same and is well worth the money.

I primarily shoot nightlife and special events professionally, and in a crowded club, this is the perfect lens. Not only is it great for capturing subjects with minimal distortion (it takes some practice with distancing to get it right) but the wide angle captures all the activity around giving life to an otherwise "normal" nightlife shot. It also makes the venues look much larger than they are, which my clients love.

I just worked a rather large event in LA for NYE 2014, and used this lens as my primary - the results are amazing and probably some of the best work I've produced for a nightlife event.

I must admit I was a little hesitant to get anything other than Canon due to concerns regarding quality, but I'm very happy with the Sigma and would recommend it to anyone.

FYI - although it doesn't mention it, the lens comes with a lens case - no need to buy an additional one like I thought I had to. ;)
