What it does: It hides most (not all) the visible light generated by your pop-up flash.
Why? When using the pop-up flash to trigger other flashes, it still has to flash (at a very low power) to generate the light needed to trigger the other flashes. Sometimes this adds unwanted light, can be seen in shinny objects, adds a second catch light in the eyes, and your subjects will see an annoying pre-flash that can make some people blink. This simple device filters the light and makes all that go away.

I use it with my D700, and it works perfectly.

Tips: To remove it, pull straight back - firmly. You don't need to pull the tiny metal pin up. If you grip the base with your finger and press your thumb against the camera body, it comes off pretty easy.

You can tape it over the front of a SB-800 flash to block it's light. Doing so turns it into a SU800-like controller, and you get the autofocus assist light. This is a great trick for low light use. Be sure to dial down the SB-800 to it's lowest power setting, so you don't melt the SG-3IR (not sure that it will, but no need to change it).

Yes, it is handy to have two. I modified one to velcro to my SB-800.

Last tip - to trigger strobes around corners, use those small convex mirrors they make to stick onto truck mirrors. Put velcro on them so you can stick them to clamps as a trigger relay.

As other users have stated, this has a small metal pin that is very difficult to raise to get the SG-3IR off the camera. I had not read the reviews before purchasing, and had a very hard time removing it. Once I got it off the camera (no small feat) I got a pair of pliers and completely removed the pin - I was not going to take chances with filing it down or any other alterations.

If you can get past all that, it does what it says it will do - I use it with a D7000 and have found it useful, but wish the design had been better.

worth the money

Comments about Nikon SG-3IR IR Panel for Camera Built-In Flashes:

I use this device on a Nikon D7000 with the on camera flash in commander mode, remotely controlling a SB700 speedlight. Without this device, even with the on camera flash dialed down, I would still have occasional reflection in peoples glasses. You can use other methods to block the flash, but this device works exactly as it's supposed to. Worth the minimal amount of money spent.

Comments about Nikon SG-3IR IR Panel for Camera Built-In Flashes:

Bought the SG-3IR to use on my D600 Nikon, when using off camera flash. I have no problems taking off or attaching to my camera hot shoe. I have used the SG-3IR several times and must say it works great. It keeps the on camera flash from becoming part of the photo. Love it.

Comments about Nikon SG-3IR IR Panel for Camera Built-In Flashes:

Adequately blocks the built-in flash while still activating the remotes. Need to be a little careful shooting top down. The panel can swing out allowing some light to escape the bottom. Mounts easily but need to be careful not to damage this thing sticking up on the camera body. All plastic but reasonably well constructed. An annoyance but works as advertised and much cheaper than radio triggers.

This is a great accessory for enabling high-speed synchro in FP mode using an external flash, and also serves as a cheap and simple backup in case your remote flash trigger fails.

This little piece of plastic aims to stop the light of a pop-up flash when you want to use a remote flash. I am using it with a Nikon D700+Nikon SB-700, and it works good

Handy gadget to have in the bag when using the Nikon Creative Lighting System for off-camera flash controlled by DSLRs with the pop-flash (D700, D300s, D90). Looks a bit odd but solves the problem of unwanted light from the on-camera with precise set-ups and distracting the subject when working with a model. Even better (but bigger and more costly) solution is the Nikon SU-800 controller.

It's a shame that we Nikon users have to get this, but it does work. Triggering my flash wirelessly with my pop works great but the pop up casts an unwanted shadow in the background of portraits. This baby blocks that light and that problem is nonexistent.

Comments about Nikon SG-3IR IR Panel for Camera Built-In Flashes:

Used to block the visible light from the pop-up flash when used in commander mode, controlling a remote sb-700.It works as advertised - the onboard flash will have no effect on the exposure.I like the way it's hinged, allowing me to flip it up to open or close the pop-up flash head.On the downside, it does seem to reduce the range somewhat, but i've only noticed this outdoors - I was able to flip it up without removing it from the shoe, and then the remote flash would fire, and the subject was far enough away that the pop-up had no effect on the exposure.

No more bright light to blind your subjects' eyes if your are doing off-camera flash with the builtin as a commander. Great Nikon quality and design.

Comments about Nikon SG-3IR IR Panel for Camera Built-In Flashes:

I do a lot of indoor portraits with my 85mm f1.8g and I dislike how my pop-up commander on the Nikon D700 creates pinpoint catch lights in the eyes. With this trusty piece of $ plastic, I no longer worry about it. Apparently more than enough IR magic flies around this plastic shield to trigger my SB-900 so long as the IR receptor is facing toward the camera. I'm not sure why some reviewers say this is difficult to remove from the hot shoe as I've not had any problems.

Comments about Nikon SG-3IR IR Panel for Camera Built-In Flashes:

The product is used to allow the on-camera flash to act as a programmer and trigger for an off-camera, wirelessly connected flash. The on-camera flash does not light the subject.
However, to the subject it may appear to be operating as a flash, causing the subject to blink or otherwise react. Remember that when used in the command mode, the on-camera control flashes go off before the photo is actually taken, thus creating an opportunity for the subject to react at the time the photo image is recorded.
By covering the on-camera flash and allowing only infra-red light to be emitted, which the wireless slave flash can receive and interpret, the subject is unaware of the on-camera light signals.
It is not necessary to use this device: the wireless system works the same with it or without it. But, it is a very useful add-on that costs little.
It is especially useful when photographing children who may be startled by a flash.
There is no mechanical or electrical aspect to this device. It is simply a filter put over the on-camera flash. It attaches easily to the hot shoe on the camera and is easy to use.
