Pelican cases are my favourite gear in all my arsenel of equipment. They're the most reliable and I never worry about my gear inside them.

The interior foam is a bit costly though, and they never last that long either. If I would buy it again i'd purchase the non-foam version, than go to my local foam store and get it cut up myself. They'd also be more durable and last longer.

One issue with the case is the automatic purge valve. I take mine on flights all the time and (either I got a lemon or this is the norm) my case lid warps quite considerably during transit. This means that equipment on the inner region of the case can get damaged as it becomes crushed by the engorging lid. My industrial suction cups had to be bent back into a flat shape as they were damaged in this way.

It also means that you CANNOT open the case immediately after landing from a plane. It takes approximately an hour for the valve to allow enough air back in for air pressure balance restoration, allowing you to open and use the case once more.

I cannot say for sure, whether this issue is related to all pelican cases or whether the valve on my case is faulty. It does work - it just works very slowly.

One thing I love about pelican cases though, is the fact that over the years they develop plenty of scratches, the colour fades a little and stickers are plastered all over them. It shows years of experience through planes and rough baggage handlers. I love my pelican cases rough and worn as it shows the life it's been through to protect my gear.

I use my pelican case for everything, even holiday travelling. However it's way overengineered for use other than protecting expensive and professional equipment.

The new Pelican 1650 case is really a Storm Case. The case will not stand up straight because the bottom feet or fins are no longer part of the new design. The long main handle is gone so if the case load is not balanced it's hard to carry. The old design allowed you to position your grip to compensate for the load imbalance. Also the built in retractable extension handle is now two piece with supports that get caught on everything. The old design was one piece and flat it was way better and easier to deal with. I wasn't a big fan of the Storm Cases and really liked the Pelican products but with the merger of Pelican and Storm cases, Pelican cases have really become a Storm case. I understand that changes happen but they should be changes that make the case better not worse. These cases are still a good deal but I would rather have the option and pay a little bit more and get a case that works. There was no reason to change this case other then to make it cheaper.

    Good Fit for Telescope Equipment

Comments about 1650 Case with Foam (Black):

I have two 1650 cases to store telescope equipment:
    - one to store a Celestron Nexstar 8SE (tube + mount + small accessories)
    - one to store a Celestron CGEM DX mount.
They fit in the case using either the provided foam or using the original styrofoam of the Celestron product (but in that case you need to do some cutting of the styrofoam to adjust its size to the case).

The equipment fits nicely and feels well protected. The only drawback is that this is quickly getting very heavy: the case is 25lb, the CGEM DX mount is 55lb so that's 80lb total! But that's still transportable thanks to the wheels and large handles.

Comments about 1650 Case with Foam (Black):

This is a very good case. I needed to consolidate all of my camera equipment since I was taking in so many bags to shoots. It's wonderfully built and I love just taking this and a couple of tripods into a shoot, as well as getting to wheel it. I feel that my cameras and equipment are very safe in there. My only gripes are: I'm happy about the size, and yet if I'm in a confined space, it's a pretty bulky beast, and it's not comfortable to use as a chair for a long period of time. I wish I didn't have to replace the foam once I make some equipment changes, but that is what it is. Main problem is weight. The two bags I had were not particularly heavy, but the case, even without stuff in it, is a little on the heavy side, and I have a bad back, so I have to be very careful about lifting it in and out of car or up stairs or platforms. But, overall, it's a good one.

Comments about 1650 Case with Foam (Black):

This case is big enough that I can fit my entire sound kit in it. There is a ring of set foam around the sides and then the interior is the pick-n-pluck stuff, but there are two separate layers of it. I was able to make two levels of cutouts so that I can stack items on top of each other which is great for me. It could make things a little more awkward for narrow but tall items. The build is very strong and the wheels are nice, I haven't had a problem with them catching the edges of rugs and they are fine on rough pavement. Haven't tried taking it off-road but I wouldn't expect any case to handle that well. It's a little heavy and the size gets a little awkward, so if you don't absolutely need to go this big I would get the next size down, any smaller would not have worked for me though.

The 1650 is a great case. It seals well, is very rugged, and the extending handle is a nice addition. Unfortunately, this version with the extending handle also has feet on the back. An older version that I had only had ribs on the back which made it easy to take up stairs without lifting the case. This version is easier to pull with the longer handle though.

Use this to carry lenses BMCC Camera anton Bauer Batteries and marshall Monitor. Fits everything precisely and the pick and pluck is fairly easy to remove and to shape. The only problem are the feet when lying down are just a bit too long and it is hard to get the right angle to have the wheels roll out of the vehicle. but this is minor.

I work at a school doing webcasts for sports and activities and stuff and so I needed a nice big rolling case to carry around cables, cameras, a mixer, etc. This thing is nice and big, really sturdy and secure, rolls beautifully but is pretty heavy. That's a plus and a minus, of course, because it's part of why it is so sturdy, but it is pretty hard to lift when it's full.

Comments about 1650 Case with Foam (Black):

Rock solid, this case offers superb protection from life. I use it to haul 4 Alien bees, power cords, their reflectors, Vagabond Mini, extra flash tubes, and several super clamps and accessories. It all fits perfectly with plenty of protective foam around each piece.

I bought a electic carving knife to cut the foam like you can see many people using on YouTube but I found a plain old bread knife with a slightly serrated edge works beautifully. Live and learn.

Wheels are far better than my 1510 cases.

Comments about 1650 Case with Foam (Black):

B&H and Pelican have both proved themselves again, and further earned my trust and appreciation. A few weeks ago, I found myself in need of a good case to transport some sensitive equipment on a road trip, with not very much time to get the product in and prepared. B&H's quick, free shipping ensured that the case arrived in time to be used, and Pelican's Pick-and-Pluck Foam helped me to fully customize the case in just a few hours (the majority of which was spent on laying out the arrangement of items). The case is very durable, albeit heavy and a bit awkward because of its size. The wheeled bottom, and sliding handle make the size and weight much more manageable than would be the case otherwise. The latches are loud, but are easy to operate and secure the contents well, and the handles are generously sized to make moving the case easier.

I would highly recommend this case to anyone in need of a large, durable case, that is easy to customize and operate, and I would recommend purchasing it from B&H to anyone who wants it at a reasonable price and with prompt, free shipping.

Comments about 1650 Case with Foam (Black):

I paired this case with the 1659 lid organizer. I love it! It houses my Panasonic GH4 + 6 batteries and charger, PNC honu cage, Rokinon 35mm T1.5 cine lens, Tokina 11-16mm lens, Nikon Nikkor 50mm 1.8G lens, Tascam DR-60D, Sennheiser HD-280 pro headphones, MustHD M701 7" field monitor + batteries & charger, Rode NTG-2 with WS6 windscreen and a bunch of XLR/HDMI cables. The case is BIG! I've become a huge Pelican fan and have a 1200 for my Zoom H4N & two H1s, a 1500 for GoPro stuff & a 1510 for Canon Camcorder & mic accessories.

Seems pricey at $200+ but very much worth it and a small investment in something that will protect your expensive gear and house so much in one case. If you're willing to spend thousands on gear, do yourself a favor and spend $200 more on the Pelican 1650!
