This is a great product if you have the money to buy it. I'm using it to store and carry lighting equipment and it works great.
There are others that use this for camera bodies and lenses, but this version with dividers isn't to my standards when it comes to the "bottom of the box" padding, the interchangeable dividers are fine but the bottom of the box isn't padded enough. I would recommend the one with the "pluck away" foam cubes for that.
The only thing I can think of to mention is the weight of the case. Empty it weighs 30 pounds (that's without the divider case). So you have to take this into account if you want to use it to travel by air, because it will only leave you with 20 pounds to use until you reach the 50 pound limit.
I would also recommend on looking for "practical" photos via search engine, in order to gauge the size.

You probably already know all the good points about this case so I am only going to mention some of the issues I had with the new 1654.

I now have three of these and and the older two have the grey divider sets, they grey (older version) is easier to see your black gear, its "fuzzy" on all sides so you can configure the compartments/dividers any way you want and the main unit is one piece and fits in the 1650 so much better than the newer grey and had stiffer walls to hold your gear more firm so it was not sliding around.

The new black dividers of the new version are a little flimsier, you get less pieces, the black makes it hard to see your gear.... I can deal with all of this but its much harder to configure because the velcro will not attach to each other (most of the pieces are nylon not the fuzz for the velcro)

Still a great case and works well with a few big pieces of gear (one of mine houses the 300 and 400 2.8s+ couple of bodies and misc) the other a 600+ bodies and misc) the newest one was for video gear (fs700 and lots of little gadgets, wires, rails and small lenses ect...) and the lack of velcro options on the new one made it pretty tuff and in the end I used one of the older ones for the many small video parts and the new case for the Nikon 600 and bodies.

Nice case but I will look for the old grey dividers if I need another one

Comments about 1654 Waterproof 1650 Case with Dividers (Black):

    • Dividers should be stronger
    • You can't use the handle & wheel on stairs... When you climb a stair, the back of the case is not flat so, you have to take the case in your hands. Not major problem but another company solved this...
    • With a case as large as this one, consider you have to be strong to carry it.

    Overall, very good investment !!!!

Comments about 1654 Waterproof 1650 Case with Dividers (Black):

I use the 1650 now as my studio in a box for location work. It's the size of an international suitcase. I considered getting two smaller pelicans versus one big one but in the end went for the simplicity of one generous case.

There is something satisfying about opening up the case and hearing the air lock release. If you have done your research you will know that Pelican's are indestructible but the pay off is the weight. A price you have to pay for the durability and the air/water/dust tight seal.

The wheels are solid under the weight of a loaded case. I have dragged it across rocks, gravel and just yesterday through a cow paddock with uneven ground, dirt and grass. I avoided any 'cow pucks', thank goodness. It's a good feeling knowing that everything inside is protected from dust!

I used to carry 2 camera bags, 1 utility bin and I attached it all with bunji cords to a dolly. Wrestling through bags and the bin was time consuming and no matter how well I organised things ahead of time, things soon fell into chaos.

I love opening the case and seeing everything I need and might need in clear view. Everything has a place and it's a no-brainer to drop back into place when shuffling and changing out gear.

Regrets: I waited so long to get one.
Cons: I am a woman and so the weight is a bit of a challenge but I needed a good excuse to build upper body strength!

great case, weighs 30lbs empty so it's likely going to be overweight on a flight. Tan color gets scuffed up more easily than black, gives it character.

I plan on using this box for travel with video equipment and secure storage of equipment. Like all Pelican products, this one is built tough. Maybe too tough though as the toughness comes with a heavy weight. This box is 30 pounds empty and the weight escalates quickly when filling. I bought mine with the padded divider kit. I've read some reviews that thought the padding quality is lacking...I don't see any lack of quality with the padding kit.I'm yet to give this a through road trip workout so maybe I'll have more input later.

    Pelican case fits EVERYTHING!

Comments about 1654 Waterproof 1650 Case with Dividers (Black):

Initially,I did my homework on the dimensions making sure everything I planned to store in the case. Even with my meticulousness, i underestimated just how much space was in the pelican. Over course it was a great underestimation. It's light for the size, but as anyone with experience with a pelican knows, overtime, it gets heavy. The Wheels comes in handy and is necessary for the size. Great product.

Comments about 1654 Waterproof 1650 Case with Dividers (Black):

Word of advice, should you decide to get a new Pelican case. Read the specs and take out a tape measure to see what size case you are buying. Most of my photo assignments I can drive to or elect to do just that. If you have to fly with this case keep in mind it is 30LBS empty with pro glass you're going to be hit with overweight fees.

Having opened with that I have to add I love this box. It's huge and can carry more gear than I usually bring on a job. It's a Pelican so I know it will last forever. I bought the 1654 with divider set because I needed a large secure case but here is where I have exception with Pelican. There are not enough pieces to this divider set of the correct size. Also, because the large pieces are so long and big it is difficult to align them in the box for sectioning and compartmentalizing. NO, I would not ever again use the pick and pluck foam unless I was setting up this case for one specific set or type of equipment. The dividers are the way to go even though they are difficult to handle. Also, I don't think they are padded enough and still feel that I have to add cushioning to the sections. I have several other cases by Pelican and have used the dividers from those cases to create a custom design for the next shoot.

Over all, I wouldn't put my equipment in any other type of case for extended travel until I get to the shoot where I will use a waist belt system for the actual work.

I am using the 1654 as a storage and transportation box for most of my cameras and lenses plus all the other hardware that I need for studio or location shoots. Yes, it is sturdy and spacious, but it comes at the price of being heavy (more than 30 lb with the deviders). So if you load it to capacity you can expect 60-70 lb to move around. It has sturdy wheels and lots of handles, but you probably need two people to lift and move it. The dividers are plenty and well thought out for photography gear, but the black color makes it difficult to spot your lenses and cameras etc, if they are black. Earlier versions of the dividers reportedly were grey or blue, and that was probably a better choice. Could not get my hands on any of those.

Comments about 1654 Waterproof 1650 Case with Dividers (Black):

I needed a case to replace my aging Tamrac roller. At anywhere from $500 to $600 for a replacement from Tamrac or Thinktank, I thought I'd reinvestigate Pelican. This Pelican 1654 was wider, taller and deeper than my Tamrac, and it it costs about $150 less than either. The case holds just enough extra gear than the Tamrac and although it is about 15# heavier, having the gear I need makes it worth the pain. Only two minor negatives; The lid organizer insert seems almost an afterthought. It works better than nothing, but the pockets are too small, and the zippers seem flimsy. When you bang this case against anything, including your leg when schlepping it up and down a flight of stairs, it hurts! Never had that issue with the softer-sided rollers, but the soft-side rollers are no-where-near as durable. The Pelican is well worth these small issues.

I really like the case, but it is hard to go up and down steps. It hits the square feet and catches. I will modify the bottom so it will work. Also the locks are great, but I need one lock in the center that I can use for speed. I have the box full of gear and it is tethered and locked at the venue.

      Standard suitcase sized Pelican

Comments about 1654 Waterproof 1650 Case with Dividers (Black):

The 1654 is big enough to fit tripods (my Miller Compass 15 + Solo Carbon sticks easily fit in here), cameras, the works and room to spare.

I use this as a local job case and can fit enough inside for a two camera team: A 70-200mm Canon lens will stand upright, as will FS700s with MOVCAM handles etc. etc. So for documentary or BTS style shooting I use the 1654 as a 'base of operations' and having everything in one case makes moving locations a piece of cake.

The padded velcro dividers are the weakest point of construction: While infinitely more useful than the foam option, the quality of the velcro pads is quite cheap. Also, I wish Pelican would supply any other colour but black padding as standard ... black makes finding small items bloody difficult and when you've got clients breathing down your neck, trying to locate something as dumb as a lens cap becomes quite stressful!!!

Also, the quality of the zippers on the optional lid organiser are totally rubbish; they snag, stick and you need to use two hands to get the things to move. More often than not you've got your hands full on set, this kind of detail can be really annoying ... so much so that generally I use the lid organiser to hold items I almost never need on set.

I know this review is for the 1654 case (which is 100% perfect) it's the additional items like dividers and organiser which let the package down. I'd happily rate all of my Pelican cases case 5 out of 5 stars, but the padding and lid organiser would be lucky to reach 3 stars.

Comments about 1654 Waterproof 1650 Case with Dividers (Black):

I purchased this case because I was needing something more secure and sturdy than my Lowepro messenger bag (which is also an incredibly fine product) when shooting events such as weddings and parties. The multitude of latches are a plus, as well as having two holes to loop padlocks through.

I was surprised at how big it was when I received it, but having an extendable handle with rollers like a carry-on bag makes it easy to transport, and it fits all my gear, even a water bottle and granola bars for those LONG shoots where getting away to eat isn't an option.

It's surprisingly lightweight for being such a big case, and I hope that it will be as durable as I hope it is, lasting a very long time.

Comments about 1654 Waterproof 1650 Case with Dividers (Olive Drab Green):

I plan to use this to carry my 300 2.8 and 500 f4 to do some landscape shots. I look forward to being able to wheel vs carrying my gear. Of course the dividers will be changed for normal use when using smnaller lenses. It is extremely tough. All materials are top notch. Stainless steel axles and ball bearings ....very nice. I really like the one touch latches...brilliant design. My criticism is that I wish the wheels were larger so they would travel over rough terrain better and I wish these makers would use a light grey or white color for the dividers so one could see into the case better!!!!! Also, to use the organizer (optional), one must remove the protective foam from the lid. The organizer should have some foam behind it. I know it should not matter but I love the color!
