bought it online through third-party retailer; uses 4 double A batteries (AA) - lasts about 15 minutes then have to replace them; gets extremely hot; was attaching to camera and notch snapped on bottom of light - now doesn't stay attached

Comments about Sony HVL-10NH 10 Watt on Camera Video Light - Active Interface Shoe:

Very short Lifespan shuts off without warning, wish it was powered off camera. Light is a bit bright so I would recommend a flash cover. Best if used in 3-6 minute intervals. Great for still pictures as well for improved lighting. I use it with my Canon T2i for Weddings perfect addition to any flash.

Comments about Sony HVL-10NH 10 Watt on Camera Video Light - Active Interface Shoe:

Batteries need to be fully charged immediately before use, slight drop in voltage from a week's storage will cause low-battery indicator to come on, then light will turn-off. Batteries only last 15-20 minutes of constant use. Illumination is very low - must be 4-6 feet from subject to provide any useful illumination.

Really requires backup batteries. Doesn't provide an extensive amount of light. Needs to be close to the subject.

Comments about Sony HVL-10NH 10 Watt on Camera Video Light - Active Interface Shoe:

Very compact, light and portable as well as powerful (cannot watch it directly). It works with all kind of rechargable AA Batteries. It's perfect for close angle recording. If it had a light difuser, I would rate it 5 starts as beam is one single straight spot like a powerful flash light.

Comments about Sony HVL-10NH 10 Watt on Camera Video Light - Active Interface Shoe:

I bought this video light in September 2008 not knowing that regular batteries would not function. I tried using it for two events and light showed that it needed batteries. I then had to buy Ni-MH batteries which is recommended and it last about 30 mins. Although SONY has offered to change the batteries Im very disappointed. The light should work for about 60 mins.

I had this product for about 3 week and i like it but it would help if it was a little brighter and have the option to use the camcorders batteries or external but over all it a good patch.

Comments about Sony HVL-10NH 10 Watt on Camera Video Light - Active Interface Shoe:

At 10W of power don't expect too much from this light. It's light pattern is very narrow (3 ft diameter at about 8 ft distance) in fact it is really just a spot light. The only use I think it has is to light the faces of a couple of people that are within 8 ft or so of the camera. If there is a group of people the light fall off won't pick up people to the left or right of the beam.Sony's proprietary Active Interface Shoe is awkward to use. It is tricky lining the light's base with the camera's shoe. This is another disappointing feature of this light. I hoped I could use the light quickly when needed! The switch to turn on the light has some kind of safety lock that requires you use two hands to turn it on. A major pain if you want to switch it on an off while filming.I would suggest buying another 3rd party stand alone light rather than this Sony product. You could probably buy something that works much better for less money.
