I've had an HTM MX-500 for about 5 years and a Harmony One for 2 years. But, 2 weeks ago, I acquired a Universal Remote # RF-10 for reasons explained hereunder and on which I am now giving a review. For a start, I must inform the reader that I NEVER enter manufacturer and/or unit numbers in any universal remote control. I ALWAYS buy a machine that permits "Learning" from original individual remotes and I enter each function - one by one - for each system component (By 'components', I mean units like TVs, DVD Players, Amplifiers, etc.). I had programmed the HTM for 5 machines and it has worked flawlessly for the past 5 years (still does). Yet, it has what I consider somewhat of a problem. As most 'learning' remotes, the HTM is 'iffy' on, say, about 15 programmings out of the 150 functions I 'entered' into that remote (10%). Eventually, I did succeed in programming ALL 150 single function commands but it took many many tries to get those 15 stubborn ones "in". Once "in" though, the HTM never lost one of these 150 functions nor any of the 4 Macros also originally programmed - it has faithfully kept everything in memory with or without batteries. Good Machine; say 4*. The Harmony ? You can have it. Sure, it is slick but if you plan on programming each and every function of all your AV system components, better have a few spare vacation weeks to do so. Why? Well, for a start, you cannot program this machine using your original remotes. No, too simple. You HAVE to go on Logitech's website (they make the Harmony), enter each and every name and model of your machines and then you get a listing of functions to pick from and you enter what you want on which button of which machine. Very tedious. And... to add to your 'enjoyment', you must 'save' your work every 10 minutes or so otherwise you stand to lose all you programmed work since you did your last "save". Now, if their Web Site would be lightning quick, it wouldn't be too bad and you could probably get the whole job done within a week or so. But no such luck; every time you 'save', you have to re-enter the unit's programming mode and anything + everything on Logitech's Harmony's Site is far from speedy. Something else. Many times, the function you want is not in the list given for a particular component. You then have the possibility to program that function using all 3 - your original remote, your computer, and Logitech"s site - something as efficient as trying to scratch your left jaw with your right hand using the back-of-the-head route; not too efficient. After wasting weeks of snail progress in laboriously 'programming' functions in that Harmony, I just gave up out of sheer exhaustion and frustration. $[$]. (with tax) down the drain. As for this universal "Universal Remote, Model RF-10", it is easy, reliable, excellent and I'm missing qualities. But, for a start, if, like me, you prefer to enter each and every function on whatever button you want for each one, well, friend, search no more. With THIS unit, I was able to make it learn over 250 functions plus 4 complex macros in a matter of a few days in my spare time. The RF-10 took EVERYTHING on the first try. I never had to repeat even one learned command. 250+ functions on 8 different components (1-TV + 2-CDs + 2-DVDs + 2-AMPs + 1-CD/DVD-External-Recorder) plus 4 'macros' all 'learned' on the first push of any & all buttons from the original remotes aimed at the RF-10. Not one FAIL message, all flashing GOOD - meaning the command had been learned and permanently stored on that button on which I wanted it to be stored !!! :) After having programmed all the functions I WANTED on each on my 8 components and NONE of those useless doohicky ones most of us can do without, I went to each and every machine (and combination of units in the case of 'macros') to check and try out EVERYTHING. Boy, was I surprised: ALL Commands, ALL Buttons, ALL Macros, All of ALL worked smoothly and perfectly on this first try on each and every component - NOT one error !!! :) Now, from trial and error when practicing with various universal remote throughout the years (yeah, many moons ago, I did buy the $25. kind at Departmental Stores - not one of these worth a d - - - ), I found out that even with excellent ones like this RF-10, there's are a few simple rules to follow which more or less guarantee success like I had and which I just described above. Here they are:1) First, write down from your original remote all the functions you want the Universal RF-10 to learn from chosen original remote you are about to transfer to your new Universal Remote RF-10 and on which button you wish to have that function. Repeat this procedure for each of your other components which you intend to also teach its commands unto the RF-10. This saves a lot of programming errors. 2) Secure 4 NEW AA and 4 NEW AAA batteries with which you are well advised to replace the existing batteries in your original remotes that you intend to use to program your new Universal Remote RF-10 even if your present batteries still function properly (evidently, that new RF-10 WILL have new batteries because batteries don't come with it). Put all the odds in your favor - strong signal = near guarantee of success on first try at 'teaching' your new all-in-one universal remote (I mention AAs and AAAs because most, if not all, factory remotes use these types of batteries). 3) When you have programmed the universal remote with all the functions you want on its buttons, go and check each and every function with the component these functions are intended for. This way, if some command does not work - that is if you press, say, the "open/close" button for your DVD Player's disc tray and it does not open - then you simply re-program that button to get it to work properly. It is far easier and less time consuming to do it 'piece-by-piece' than if you program every button on all your components all at once and then have to check 200-300 or more functions (still all at once) because, since you are not yet too familiar with your all-in-one newly acquired and programmed universal remote, checking such a large number of functions in one sitting can be very tedious - you increase your chances of skipping some and . . . swear later. 4) Although you CAN program ALL functions on various buttons of a given component (say your DVD player) all at once, one after another, it is not recommended to do so because that's when the universal remote makes errors; like not saving them all (too many 'jobs' at once, seems to drive any one of these all-in-one remotes 'crazy'. I found out that, if you program no more than 3 functions in a row then SAVE these entries, you get a perfect score nearly every time (I did and I had 100% success - not one 'Fail'! But, I say 'nearly' because it CAN happen. However, by 'saving' after 2 or 3 functions have been learned, you limit the chance of failure to practically zero). Bottom line: Overall Rating for the "Universal Master Control Remote, Model RF-10" = 5 Big Stars 'across the board' - for appearance, for reliability, for ease of programming, for ease of use, and . . . for many more 'goodies'. Cons? None so far. Thank you Universal for fine engineering and Thank you B&H for excellent prices and speedy delivery. :)Sincerely, Helen Richard - Montreal - Canada

Comments about RF-10 Master Control Universal Remote Control:

This remote is a fantastic product! We replaced 7 different remotes with this one! I bought this for my husband as a gift and he loves it. Easy to set up and easy to use. No more grabbing a handful of remotes to turn on,off, change, or program all of our different video and audio equipment. And our coffee table looks more like a table and less like a 'home for old remotes'. My favorite feature is the LED screen and buttons. I like that you can use it even when the lights are off. This is a great product and I am sure you will love it as much as we do.

As with many universal remotes, it is hard to get them to do all the functions of all the devices, although this one comes pretty close. Good instructions help you to do this and you have plenty of auxiliary choices to supplement the standard choices. The trouble is remembering what all those auxiliary choices were.

Comments about RF-10 Master Control Universal Remote Control:

Did you realize that the average remote has around 50 buttons? Half of which you may never use. This remote makes it easy to consolidate the ones you do, for daily use.

I went from a Harmony 550 "smart" remote to the Universal RF-10, and there's no going back for me. No more paging through screens, or cumbersome internet setup, then having to progam some buttons manually anyway. Every button you need is right there in front of you on the RF-10, and is easily programmable through a simple 5 step process.

I use this for my home theater receiver, TV, cd player/cassette combo, blu-ray, HDDVD player, DVD recorder/VHS combo, a second CD player, basic MP3 player controls, and I still have room for a cable box or satellite dish receiver.

The RF-10 may seem slightly on the large side, but it is very comfortable in the hand, easy to hold on to,,, and the buttons are very well laid out in a logical order, nicley spaced, and easy to press, (unlike the Harmony in all respects). The small screen is just enought to remind you which component you are currently controlling, (in case you forget), and help you through the manual programming process.

While the RF-10 does have some basic auto programming, I would recommend full manual programming. It's really not that difficult. The manual does a good job of explaining the steps.

I sat down ahead of time, and figured out which functions I wanted on the RF-10 and wrote them down on a piece of paper. As I programmed each button, I crossed it off on the paper. Programming each component to the RF-10 took maybe 5 minutes apiece, but I have total control the way I want it.

I have not tried any Macros yet, so I can't comment on that. However,,, the "volume punch through" is an awesome feature that allows you to control the receivers volume, no matter what you are watching or listening to.

I purchased my RF-10 back in January of 2013, and I have been holding off doing a review, until I had a good amount of time to play with it. I am so pleased, I recently purchased a second RF-10, along with MRF100B base station, so I can control my stereo from outside, or in the basement, bedroom, or home office.

The RF-10 not only uses infared for sending signals, but Radio Frequency as well. This way you can contol through walls and such, and the MRF100B receives the RF, and can output the remote commands to up to six individual components.

The only very minor negative is the backlight color and brightness. The color is red insted of white, and is a little on the dim side, however it is enough in a dark room. No matter, after a while you won't even need the light because the remote is so well laid out.

Keep in mind that this is not a smart remote. It will not keep track of what is "on" and what is "off". It will not think for you.

The RF-10 will supposedly only control 8 components, but in therory you could contol up to 16 by using the "shift" button. It's like hitting the "function" button on a keyboard. For instance... my DVD recorder/VHS combo player. I use the same "play", "pause", "stop", "FF", "RW" and "Eject" buttons on the remote for both. I just hit the "shift" button first, when controlling the VHS side of the machine.

Lastly... I have been shopping with B&H for years. Their prices are always competitive, and their sevice has been terrific. Product selection is above average and very diverse.

I had the chance to go to NYC a few years ago, and visit the store in person. It is a unique experience, and the sales staff is very friendly. The overhead conveyor sysytem for your items purchased is neat to watch, and everything is waiting for you at the checkout counter. If you ever find yourself in NYC, take the time to check out the store in person.

this thing is awesome. I have fought with x-10 remote extenders for years trying to hide components. I bought 2 remotes and a power blaster for about 100 bucks. Thats half of 1 logitech. Great value, easy to program, works upstairs and downstairs. It even controlled my projector and media players through the learning feature. sound and power punch throughs work great as well

The greatest thing about this remote are the macros. I have programmed this remote to turn on and off the TV, Amplifier and Cablr Box/DVR with the push of one button. I am handicapped and it was easy to program. My only complaint is I've used the same one before and the numbers, letters and arrows wear out.

I use my RF-10 to control 4 comnponents. I have tried many other universal remotes but this one is the easiest one to program and operate. It has plenty of options. The backlight could be a little better. Overall I highly recommend the RF-10!

Bought this unit to replace one that had been dropped one too many times. I use this remote with the power blaster and the new one was a snap to reprogram. My only complaint is that the keypad layout doesn't have buttons identical to my BluRay Player, but with the "learn" function, I was able to customize the basic controls. For my uses, and at this great price, this unit is a steal.

I also looked at the Harmony 900 remote and this one is a fraction of the cost, even if you include the cost of RF extender kit, which is a must for this remoteYou need to do some reading to program the remote in order for your TV and cable box to work simultaneously - Also you need to be careful not to press too many buttons at once/fast – because it might cancel the program codes[...] when compared to other electronic websites, B&H's price was less.[...] I recommend this product.

This replaced 3 separate remotes. Setting up TV and VCR was easy -- but there were no codes given for Blu-Ray devices. But after a bit of work, I was able to use the "Learn" process to learn the Blu-Ray commands. Macros are great, but instruction book & DVD weren't totally clear on doing it for the component buttons. The component "On" button often turns things "Off." Even given all the above, I do like this device, but would recommend it only if you are willing to experiment a bit.

Comments about RF-10 Master Control Universal Remote Control:

This neat remote control was purchased to replace the $500 CHAD on my Integra Receiver that broke. I bought it for that but discovered it works nicer on my Onkyo Receiver than the factory remote.

It has a display to help navigating and codes for just about every possible device. If I don't use it for the Integra, I will make use of it as a second remote for the Onkyo or for another TV that has a remote giving me trouble.

                                    The price was terrific, too.

This remote is pretty awesome. I have it setup to control everything in my home theater (very easy). The macros are cool because you only have to press one button to configure your whole system for whatever you want to do (watch movie, listen to music, play game system, etc). My only complaint is that it is ugly. No big deal I guess, but I have seen some other universal remotes that have a much sleeker design. For the price you can't beat it.

It was very easy to program and set-up. The only con is that I have a VCR/DVD combination player and am not able to toggle between the DVD player and the VCR player using this remote.
