This is an Impact 32" white satin umbrella with removable black backing. Umbrellas soften, broaden, and diminish the light output of any tungsten or flash light source. Umbrellas with a white interior will soften and weaken light more than an umbrella with a silver lining. A white umbrella without a black backing may also be used as a makeshift softbox, although the use of the light will not be as efficient as with a softbox.
Choosing umbrella size is determined by the size of the subject, and the strength of the light supply being used. Choosing an umbrella surface is as subjective as choosing a paint and brush.
This size is perfect for a 1 - 2 person head shot, or a 2x3 ft product setup.
| Open Diameter | 32" (81.3 cm) |
| Closed Length | 23" (58.4 cm) |

Good value for the price, but...
They do everything they advertise. Use them with the blackcover on for reflected light, or remove the cover, turn themaround, and use them as quasi-softboxes.Light, easy to store.

Problems Encountered: I bent 2 stretchers on each of 2 umbrellas when theunextended stands fell over with the umbrella and a NikonSB600 mounted on each. The stretchers seem particularlyweek. (Stretchers are the metal pieces that extend from thecenter to the ribs. Ribs are the metal pieces that the clothfits over.)The good news is an FCO repair is easy. Cut some coat hangerwire a little bit shorter than the stretcher, slide it intothe channel that runs the length of the stretcher on thecloth side (it fits nicely, and gaffer tape it into place. Ireinforced all 8 stretchers in 5-10 minutes. The white tapemakes the fix practically invisible.I'd be upset over it except, at the price, I couldn't expectbullet-proof strength.
Items I Recommend: coat hangers, gaffer tape.

After removing the black backing I became very upset. It seems the black material has bled onto the white interior. There are scuffs all over the white it looks as if it is a piece of gear I have had for years or that it had a bad run in with some black asphalt. I am very disappointed. I ordered this because of Scott Kelby's blog I am disappointed he recommended such a sub par product. Save yourself some hassle and go with Wescott.

It prevents light from straying/spilling unto unwanted areas. I can take the black off, and use it as a shoot through umbrella.

Comments about Impact 32" Convertible Umbrella:
I have the larger version which works perfectly. I purchased the smaller one as I thought it would be easier to transport to site, however the one I received does not stay open. It appears the locking mechanism has failed. I will be returning for an exchange.

Comments about Impact 32" Convertible Umbrella:
I'm a film graduate starting to get freelance work and am starting to build up a slew of my own equipment. I have a Lowell 250watt light but didn't get an umbrella with it at the time. This was a cheap buy which is what I'm looking for starting out, but even with the low price there don't seem to be any issues or drawbacks. It does the job I need it to do and is versatile with the convertible option as more as a reflector or diffuser. It's a good size for my small light but is just on the verge of being too heavy for the light to sit upright.

Purchased these on 08/08, arrived to Chatham, Ontario Canada in just under 48hrs !!! Thats absolutely remarkable
Although I haven't had much time to test this product out, it will be mainly used on location for portrait/boudoir photography. I briefly gave them a go in the studio with consistent results combined with swivel adapter and hot shoe adapter using a 430EX II.

I use these on top of 6' Impact light stands with mounts. Unlike other reviews I had to problem remvong an repalcing the outer black backing. The material was thicker than I expected and seems to be durable. They also come in a thick water proof plastic bag which I thought was nice.
