Impact Convertible Umbrella - White Satin with Removable Black Backing - 32"

This is an Impact 32" white satin umbrella with removable black backing. Umbrellas soften, broaden, and diminish the light output of any tungsten or flash light source. Umbrellas with a white interior will soften and weaken light more than an umbrella with a silver lining. A white umbrella without a black backing may also be used as a makeshift softbox, although the use of the light will not be as efficient as with a softbox.

Choosing umbrella size is determined by the size of the subject, and the strength of the light supply being used. Choosing an umbrella surface is as subjective as choosing a paint and brush.

This size is perfect for a 1 - 2 person head shot, or a 2x3 ft product setup.

Backing may be removed half way, providing a unique combination of light bounced from different surfaces.
Open Diameter 32" (81.3 cm)
Closed Length 23" (58.4 cm)

Good value for the price, but...

They do everything they advertise. Use them with the blackcover on for reflected light, or remove the cover, turn themaround, and use them as quasi-softboxes.Light, easy to store.

Problems Encountered: I bent 2 stretchers on each of 2 umbrellas when theunextended stands fell over with the umbrella and a NikonSB600 mounted on each. The stretchers seem particularlyweek. (Stretchers are the metal pieces that extend from thecenter to the ribs. Ribs are the metal pieces that the clothfits over.)The good news is an FCO repair is easy. Cut some coat hangerwire a little bit shorter than the stretcher, slide it intothe channel that runs the length of the stretcher on thecloth side (it fits nicely, and gaffer tape it into place. Ireinforced all 8 stretchers in 5-10 minutes. The white tapemakes the fix practically invisible.I'd be upset over it except, at the price, I couldn't expectbullet-proof strength.

Items I Recommend: coat hangers, gaffer tape.

After removing the black backing I became very upset. It seems the black material has bled onto the white interior. There are scuffs all over the white it looks as if it is a piece of gear I have had for years or that it had a bad run in with some black asphalt. I am very disappointed. I ordered this because of Scott Kelby's blog I am disappointed he recommended such a sub par product. Save yourself some hassle and go with Wescott.

Just used these on a job that we had to fly. Light and easy to pack. Small so they worked well in tight spaces yet worked very well for the larger spaces. Very happy with them. I will buy more when I need more.

Comments about Impact 32" Convertible Umbrella:

I recieved two of these and they were both a little bent. I'm ok with that because I needed it and didn't have time to get new ones sent. They should last me though as long as I keep in mind to be careful opening and closing them.

I used them to shoot through and diffuse. I noticed right off the bat that I needed to move my lights closer but it did as it was supposed to do and my subject looked great.

The black backing is something where the tips look like they could come off but with being careful I think it will last just fine.

All-in-all I think they are great if you need them and don't have the money to spend on quality ones. They should last me quite ahile and I don't think I will replace them with better built ones until these ones break.

Comments about Impact 32" Convertible Umbrella:

These umbrellas are perfect for keeping around the studio or packing up to go on site. The overall quality is fitting of the cost, but they get the job done, and you can afford to keep a few extras around. There are a few sizes available, and they work as either a bounce or a shoot-though. Not bad for the cost. I have not delved into the color-accuracy or shift with these, because simply, they are a down-and-dirty component to your lighting arsenal, not a high-end, fancy piece of equipment. My only gripe is that the plastic sleeve the umbrella comes in is super flimsy and prone to ripping. I am a person that likes to keep things in their place, and the plastic sleeve is not a place to keep things.

Comments about Impact 32" Convertible Umbrella:

I used this product as a shoot through mounted to a monopod with an umbrella swivel and a SB700 Flash. Worked GREAT! Gave a nice soft wrap around light that with the use of TTL actually looked like natural light. This was the perfect size umbrella for this kind of use because it produced a sufficient enough spray of light but when I wanted to shoot with the bare flash, you can just fold up the umbrella without taking it out of the mount.
If I had this decision to make again, I'd pick this same umbrella. It was EXACTLY what I was needing.

A flexab;e small ubmrella, great for small still-lifes and outdoor scenes. Great reflectivity for bounce use, and good transparency for through shooting with the black cover off (lose about 1 stop total light).

It took a while to figure out how to remove the black backing as no instructions or clues are provided by the manufacturer. Now thhat I know how to do it, it can be accomplished in a minute or so. Nedd to be carefull not to tear the fabric, or break the mounting threads.

I purchased this product as a way to expand my range of uses for a flash I purchased a while back, and so far it works great. It was inexpensive, so I expect time will take it's toll on my low cost investment, but it has worked great for my purposes so far.

This was my first set of umbrellas i bought 2 of them. and i have honestly had no problems yet!!! i find myself using the shoot through rather the the reflective side but thats just me. If you just need a good umbrella set and dont want to kill your budget these are awesome even for a professional

This umbrella gives good rim light and hair light. Produces good soft light as well.

It prevents light from straying/spilling unto unwanted areas. I can take the black off, and use it as a shoot through umbrella.

Comments about Impact 32" Convertible Umbrella:

I have the larger version which works perfectly. I purchased the smaller one as I thought it would be easier to transport to site, however the one I received does not stay open. It appears the locking mechanism has failed. I will be returning for an exchange.
