Impact Convertible Umbrella - White Satin with Removable Black Backing - 60"

This is an Impact 60" white satin umbrella with removable black backing. Umbrellas soften, broaden, and diminish the light output of any tungsten or flash light source. Umbrellas with a white interior will soften and weaken light more than an umbrella with a silver lining. A white umbrella without a black backing may also be used as a makeshift softbox, although the use of the light will not be as efficient as with a softbox.

Choosing umbrella size is determined by the size of the subject, and the strength of the light supply being used. Choosing an umbrella surface is as subjective as choosing a paint and brush.

This size is perfect for a 1 - 2 person full-length portrait, or a 4x6 ft product setup.

Backing may be removed half way, providing a unique combination of light bounced from different surfaces.
Open Diameter 60" (152.5 cm)
Closed Length 37.8" (96 cm)

I wanted to buy a larger umbrella to experiment with different types of lighting modifiers and found that the Impact 60" black/white umbrella is a gem. Sure you can spend more on other brands and for the most part they will be better built but in function and type of light the impact 60" umbrella will do the same job for less.

I use it for group shots with a monolight reflecting from the inside of the umbrella as well as close ups with the black cover off and shooting thru with a speedlight or monolight. It really is a very versatile light modifier, just as Zack Arias pointed out.

I've used this umbrella on a handful of shoots, all outdoor. Of course using a weight or sandbag is recommended to prevent the umbrella from flying away. I was using it without securing it and it tipped over on grass. I was surprised that the rods had bent so easily, since I was only using it with a 580EXII & PW. I figured I could bend them back until I picked it up and half the umbrella had collapsed. The rods are held to the center column ring with a wire. Apparently the wire snapped with a little pressure. By the time I got home all the rods had come loose.

I was able to repair it by using guitar string and threading the rods and securing to the center column. I'm hoping that guitar string that is designed to be used under tension will hold up better than the wire provided. This product would get 5 stars if it used stronger materials. It's a great modifier and I love the way it softens light, if I didn't like it so much I would have bought the Wescott version. For now, I've save some money and extended the life of this umbrella.

I would not recommend this. However if you are a current owner and you experience the same situation, you can repair it and save yourself some money. Fix requires patience.

Does the job. Price is good. It is a little fragile therefore the 4 star. I use it periodically so it works for me. Should you want something for everyday use perhaps you should spend a little more and get something sturdier.

For the cost of this umbrella Im really happy.
The inner splines are made very well and don't have the tendency to bend and collapse like the other models with aluminum splines.
Ive used this on a number of jobs and its been fantastic.
Its light, easy to pack and set up, the carry case is perfect.

The only note is that by the image, I thought it came with the black cover so that you can bounce if you wish, but it did not.

Otherwise, no complaints. I wish they were all made this well.

Of course keep in mind, with the size of this thing, the slightest breeze will take it, the stand and your light crashing. Most definitely want to use a couple of good quality sand bags on your stand to keep this upright when outdoors.

Comments about Impact 60" Convertible Umbrella:

It's hard to complain about a $[$], 60in light mod. The build quality is a little iffy... But it's $[$]! Light doesn't get much bigger at that price. Great for full-length portraits and multi-person shots. But it has to be used carefully (far away, or with the reflector half-closed as a pseudo-softbox)for smaller subjects. It may not last forever, but it's extremely flexible, and extremely good value.

Good quality for the price, but not to be confused with road warrior gear. Would have liked if the white was a bit more translucent; I use big umbrellas sometimes to knock down sunlight on a face, while still looking like sunlight to match the background. This fabric is more diffused... which you may prefer. Black cover comes off & on one tiny metal tip at a time.

Very useable, but have yet to see how durable.

Comments about Impact 60" Convertible Umbrella:

I wanted to buy a larger umbrella to experiment with different types of lighting modifiers and found that the Impact 60" black/white umbrella is a gem. Sure you can spend more on other brands and for the most part they will be better built but in function and type of light the impact 60" umbrella will do the same job for less.

I use it for group shots with a monolight reflecting from the inside of the umbrella as well as close ups with the black cover off and shooting thru with a speedlight or monolight. It really is a very versatile light modifier, just as Zack Arias pointed out.

great umbrella. I also bought a Westcott Apollo Orb at the same time. this umbrella is constructed better for a fraction of the price. different modifier of course, but you get my point. putting the black back on is a bit of a chore as that it attaches at the end of each frame rib with a tiny tip. other than that, very well constructed.
