Impact Convertible Umbrella - White Satin with Removable Black Backing - 60"

B&H # IMU60BW MFR # UBBW60
In Stock
Free Expedited Shipping on Orders over $49

This is an Impact 60" white satin umbrella with removable black backing. Umbrellas soften, broaden, and diminish the light output of any tungsten or flash light source. Umbrellas with a white interior will soften and weaken light more than an umbrella with a silver lining. A white umbrella without a black backing may also be used as a makeshift softbox, although the use of the light will not be as efficient as with a softbox.

Choosing umbrella size is determined by the size of the subject, and the strength of the light supply being used. Choosing an umbrella surface is as subjective as choosing a paint and brush.

This size is perfect for a 1 - 2 person full-length portrait, or a 4x6 ft product setup.

Backing may be removed half way, providing a unique combination of light bounced from different surfaces.
Open Diameter 60" (152.5 cm)

I wanted to buy a larger umbrella to experiment with different types of lighting modifiers and found that the Impact 60" black/white umbrella is a gem. Sure you can spend more on other brands and for the most part they will be better built but in function and type of light the impact 60" umbrella will do the same job for less.

I use it for group shots with a monolight reflecting from the inside of the umbrella as well as close ups with the black cover off and shooting thru with a speedlight or monolight. It really is a very versatile light modifier, just as Zack Arias pointed out.

I've used this umbrella on a handful of shoots, all outdoor. Of course using a weight or sandbag is recommended to prevent the umbrella from flying away. I was using it without securing it and it tipped over on grass. I was surprised that the rods had bent so easily, since I was only using it with a 580EXII & PW. I figured I could bend them back until I picked it up and half the umbrella had collapsed. The rods are held to the center column ring with a wire. Apparently the wire snapped with a little pressure. By the time I got home all the rods had come loose.

I was able to repair it by using guitar string and threading the rods and securing to the center column. I'm hoping that guitar string that is designed to be used under tension will hold up better than the wire provided. This product would get 5 stars if it used stronger materials. It's a great modifier and I love the way it softens light, if I didn't like it so much I would have bought the Wescott version. For now, I've save some money and extended the life of this umbrella.

I would not recommend this. However if you are a current owner and you experience the same situation, you can repair it and save yourself some money. Fix requires patience.

Big modifier for not a lot of cash.

Comments about Impact 60" Convertible Umbrella:

It's a large light modifier for not a lot of cash. Good value.

Construction is just fine, but not necessarily built for war - basically, it feels like a golf umbrella. It probably won't last forever, but I can't fault it for the price.

Make sure you've got a good quality swivel bracket for mounting this thing on a stand, and plenty of sandbags for said stand if you plan on using it outdoors.

Comments about Impact 60" Convertible Umbrella:

I bought this as part of the Zack Arias One Light kit (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/825793-REG/Impact_Zack_Arias_1_Light.html).I am just getting started with flash photography. I've watched Zack Arias One Light videos, and he has convinced me of the virtues of a large umbrella as the starting point for modifiers. He is very obviously right - the quality of light I can get from this kit is extraordinary. So far, I have used the kit for indoor flash photography for portraits and still objects. The range of lighting that can be created with this kit is huge. The umbrella is excellent. Being able to use reflective or shoot through is very useful. It is very big, which makes for a fantastic broad soft light. As suggested by Zack, half collapsing the umbrella also allows it to be used quite effectively as a "poor man's soft box".The size, of course, can also be a disadvantage indoors, as it can be hard to find room to fit everything in.But very happy with this umbrella.

          Great Umbrella! Great Price

          By Devon Robbins

Comments about Impact 60" Convertible Umbrella:

This umbrella is fantastic! It gives such a nice even soft light. It seems to be good quality and it's very easy to take the black piece off to turn it into a shoot through umbrella. Price is very good. I have the 9.5 foot stand and it does seem a little big for the stand so if you are outside with a little wind or if you just want peace of mind I would put a weight on the stand so it doesn't fall over.

Comments about Impact 60" Convertible Umbrella:

This umbrella is great when you need to set up a large soft light source quickly. It is very quick to set up and you're ready to go.Keep in mind it is a large umbrella so a good stand is a good investment so you have a nice stable base. Great to be able to use it as a reflector umbrella or diffusion. The shaft is reasonable quality but make sure you dont secure it to tightly to an umbrella holder as the shaft can be squeezed out of shape by an over tightened screw. The detachable black cover has to be treated kindly as the connection points to the main umbrella are very lightweight and will not stand rigorous use for too long. Overall it is a really nice umbrella but probably not for rigorous use and I'd suggest a more robust umbrella for such day to day use on location.

I bought this for use as a single light source with a speedlight. It eats light up like crazy but man is it soft up close. It also works really well when you close it down halfway, which gives you a bit more control of spill light.

Comments about Impact 60" Convertible Umbrella:

I bought the 60" umbrella only because I didn't have the ceiling height to justify a 72" umbrella. After shooting with this, it became immediately apparent that this would be my favorite modifier to use. The umbrella is well made, the black cover comes off relatively easily, and so far the umbrella itself seems durable and well made. And if not, it was only $. I use this largely in the studio, and I can imagine that using this outdoors could present a problem given the wind, it's a big sale. It is a bit heavier than other umbrellas I've used, and the rod is thicker than your typical shoot-thru kit umbrella. Definitely the best $ I've spent on a modifier.

I didn't realize just how big this umbrella was (my fault) but it is exactly as described and it is easy to remove and put back on the black cover for the umbrella- in fact it's much easier to use than I had imagined.

Using this umbrella primarily for green screen portrait shooting. Nice distribution of light.

Does the job. Price is good. It is a little fragile therefore the 4 star. I use it periodically so it works for me. Should you want something for everyday use perhaps you should spend a little more and get something sturdier.

Excellent value, it's big and will catch the wind. But, it's a 60" umbrella!
