The Giottos MH-1001-652 Medium Ballhead is a pro level ballhead similar to the MH-1001, but also includes the MH-652 quick release system.

With a load capacity rating of 11 lb (5 kg), this head is ready to support a pro SLR camera system. Friction of the head can be adjusted to precisely match the equipment in use, making movement and control a cinch. Like all other Giottos ballheads, this head has an independent calibrated pan bed, with separate pan and friction knobs.

The Giottos MH-652 Quick Release Assembly is a compact quick release system that uses a base plate that features three bubble levels to easily and accurately level the camera in any position. The camera plate is released from the base via the 1.75" double action safety lever.

Heavily anodized aluminum ball lets you make camera positioning adjustments more smoothly than ever before by eliminating all vibration and skipping

I had this head for about one and a half months, it wasgreat and all, I loved it, and It came pretty cheap where Ihad bought it Smooth panning and all. After I got a 70-200 2.8 VR, some trouble has been comingup. I have to tighten both bolts way down and sometimestakes a while, and sometimes while doing it I have to thenreframe the shot. I also noticed the hex key bolt thattightens the quick release thingy to the ball loosens quiteoften with my 70-200. I am definitely getting a better head, most likely anovoflex or a manfrotoo.

      Expertise: Amature

Problems Encountered: As I said, its a chore to tighten it way down for my70-200. and after I finished tightening down it often dragsdown a bit, which is very very annoying for macro ish naturephotos.

Items I Recommend: a velbon Sherpa tripod leg, both very cheap and gets the job done

Nicely constructed. Quality product, but not strong enough. My Nikon D300s with an 18-200mm lens sagged even when the ball head was wrenched as tight as possible. It was even worse on the vertical plane. I returned it and got a MH-1301.

Comments about Giottos MH-1001 Large Ballhead with MH-652 Q.R.:

This is NOT a large ballhead. It is a medium ballhead. I haven't used it enough yet to give a very useful review, but I think it will serve me well with my bridge camera. If I had a DSLR with lenses, I would definitely need a large ballhead which, I repeat, this is NOT. I was told by a salesperson that the 1000-MH652 large ballhead had been discontinued. But there has to be a replacement and I was not offered an alternative to the large ballhead.

I purchased a travel tripod earlier this year, and while it's compact, lightweight, and easy to pack, the ball head has been giving me fits. It wasn't really "easy release" and it slipped a lot. I purchased this one, with the help of B&H, specifically to fit that tripod and to still fit into the small case. It's wonderful! It's easier to attach and the quick release really works. It also is sturdier and has bubble levels. It's a great improvement.

I use this ballhead on a Manfrotto 190XB tripod to support an Olympus OM-D E5 with various lenses, and it performs brilliantly. The quick release makes mounting onto tripod/ballhead fast and easy.

Comments about Giottos MH-1001 Large Ballhead with MH-652 Q.R.:

Researched a lot before choosing this one. This was my first ball head, having used only 3-way heads. Was tempted to go with a trigger style, but saw enough questionable comments that I was unsure I'd like it. Still getting used to it, but works very smoothly, and is solid. Once tightened, it doesn't move. I've only used it with an 18-135 lens so far, but I'm sure it will support my 100-300 F4 with no trouble, and is rated for much bigger.Being able to pan without releasing the primary clamp was a HUGE plus. Can't believe this isn't standard on all all ball heads. The release clamp takes 2 actions as a precaution against accidental release. Still getting used to that too, but I think it's a good feature.

When I load my canon t2i with battery grip and tamron 17-50mm and try to get a portrait shot (the camera tilted to shoot non-lengthwise) the ball slips. I am considering buying the heavier duty model in the future and keeping this one to use on my glidetrack since I won't use it in the portrait position for that.

This head is a replacement for one I lost (don't ask), so I knew it would fit my needs before I bought it. I wanted one that was light but had a separate pan adjustment and quick release, and the strength to hold my rather heavy camera and lenses, even in vertical position.

I use every feature - pan, ball, ball pressure adjustment, quick release, levels - but haven't wished for one that wasn't there. It's my workhorse head. My strongest endorsement is that I bought it twice!

I bought this as a head for my Gorillapod Focus, and it performs amazingly. This is my first ball head, and I'm glad I chose Giottos, I have bought them in the past, and have been very happy with their workmanship and stability. They're built like a tank and perform as so. This one also had the same quick release plate my 3-way pan head has, so it all worked out.

A great ballhead that works as advertised. I have it set on a Velbon carbon fiber tripod and use it with a Pentax KX and various lenses. It holds everything nice and tight both in landscape and portrait modes, and the panaramic capability is smooth. Very pleased in all of it's functions with all movements being smooth and precise. Its build is sturdy, built like a tank and I would believe it will provide years of hard service. The friction adjustment is a nice feature that makes using the ballhead fast when set properly. Set the friction knob once and lock or loosen the ballhead with a small turn of the lock bolt, nice. It also comes supplied with an adapter so it can be fitted to both standard tripod attachments. Included is a quick release mount that works just as it's supposed to, easy on easy off. Very hapy with it and would highly recommend to anyone looking for a solid ballhead that stays put.

I'm afraid I will only have owned the MH-1001 for two days. I bought it with budget and weight rating in mind but got home and was immediately disappointed with it; with the knobs tightened as much as possible, it still crept with a little pressure applied with 2 fingers to the tip of a light zoom lens. An 11 lbs rating isn't enough for a light DSLR with a grip and small zoom, unless it's a problem specific to Giottos.[...]have already purchased a more generic brand ballhead, costing less and rated for 17.6 lbs - and which doesn't creep an inch even with lots of pressure applied.Only nice thing about the Giottos was a nice finish, very well built. Just too weak for my modest needs.

I use this mostly for time-lapse. It works quite well with my D200 and 80-200mm f/2.8D. Very stable, feels like it could hold a significant amount more weight.
Basically, I like this little doodly.

Very easy to use. Strong enough for my gear. The quick release is very convenient.

I use the MH-1001 for my canon 40d.The unit it self is very solid and has a wonderful smooth pan and ball head motion. The one issue i do have with it, is the bubble levels. They are very small and hard to see when you have the camera on the ball head.
