BAG! Buying a camera bag on-line is a real challenge. How do you decide what's best for you and your gear without seeing and feeling the bag? Well, to Lowepro's credit they have included many helpful things on their website, including videos, dimensions and drawings.

After considerable research, I landed on this bag as the best choice for me. This bag has plenty of room for my Canon 7D (with battery grip attached) and four or five lenses. It also has pockets in the front for paperwork, pens, remote trigger, whatever. Then it has a cool "gadget bag" for chargers, CF reader, and cables - with a clear slot for a business card (not that you'd ever lose it because it is attached with a clip-on lanyard). Tucked away handily in its own sleeve is a nifty little memory card wallet, also attached with a clip-on lanyard (I threw my old memory card holder in the trash when I saw this one!).

The case also features a weather proof zipper at the top for "quick access" to your camera. Frankly, for me it was just as simple to unsnap the case and grab the camera. Oh, and speaking of weather proof, this bag even comes with a rain bag in the base that can be easily pulled out and over the entire case.

The real test of a bag is carrying and using it for a full day of shooting. So the day after I got this bag, I loading it up for a day of shooting at the St. Louis Zoo. It was flawless. Most importantly, I had no shoulder pain and no back pain from carrying all my gear.

I really love this bag. It allows me to carry everything I might need on a shoot, without lugging around a back-pack or dragging along my wheeled bag. Great price, too!

Lowepro intends for this bag to be used with a full frame DSLR and 4-5 lens which would most likely include the 24-70, 70-200, a strobe, 16-35 or 14-24, and a 85mm prime. Total weight of the bag with a full set of gear and one body will commonly be over 15 pounds but they provide only a shoulder strap and no way to attach a waist strap later. Lowepro provides a waist strap for its ProMag2 bag that hold half as much gear and will weigh half as much but not with its Stealth Reporter line, even for the 650AW bag which is designed to also hold a large 5 lb. laptop.

In addition to the lack of a waist strap the shoulder strap provides little real cushioning. I replaced it with a neopren Promaster strap that provides some cushioning for my shoulder in addition to adding a waist strap (and not one of the poorly designed Lowepro waist straps with their buckles that slip continually).

The flap has only one buckle and it slips just like the buckles Lowepro uses for its waist straps and so is useless for tightening the bag and its contents. I replaced the buckle with one from REI and with the assistance of a local shoe repair shop.

They provide a nice case for CF cards with a lanyard to secure it to the bag. Nice in concept as I believe it is foolish to store CF cards in the bag. If someone grabs or steals my camera bag I can replace the camera(s) and lenses and strobe but not the images on the CF cards. I always have the CF cards in a case that is attached to my belt.

Construction is very good and the inside dimensions are large enough to accommodate a 70-200mm lens and a full size DSLR or DX DSLR with a battery pack attached. The two outer pockets are just barely large enough for a SB800 or 580EX flash.

Flap covers the contents of the bag quite well and also has a zipper closure for greater security. There is a zipper on the flap for accessing the contents of the bag without unbuckling the flap but this is a feature I seldom use as it is slower than unbuckling the strap and with digital cameras I want to get what I need quickly and then secure the flap to keep out as much dust and dirt as possible.

For general use the Nova and Tenba bags are better but if you take the time and extra expense to replace the shoulder strap, add a waist strap, and replace the buckle for the flap, you end up with a very effective and very durable bag.

Comments about Lowepro Stealth Reporter D400AW Bag:

I bought this camera bag for my new D800E. It's a really good deal, which I found the cheaptest price. The bag has a good quality and very durable. It's roomy enough to contain the camera body and 4-5 additional lens.

Comments about Lowepro Stealth Reporter D400AW Bag:

Quality bag. Good price. Good for carrying and shooting for a short time then putting gear back into bag. Will likely not be comfortable to carry for extended periods If fully loaded but that would be true if any shoulder bag or sling. A backpack would be more comfortable but usually means less convenient access to gear, and to carry the amount if gear this bag holds in a lowepro fastback backpack would require a much bigger bag.

Comments about Lowepro Stealth Reporter D400AW Bag:

I love how giant this bag is, and I can easily hold 2 dslr bodies, my 70-200mm, 24-70mm, and 14-24mm easily. The straps in the back easily and securely allows this bag to slip through the handlebars of my camera suitcase so it's very portable when I am wheeling my equipment to weddings and I don't have to lug the bag on my shoulder. I also love that the top has a zipper to reach through into the bag quickly so I so not have to re-open the flap of the bag to access my lenses. The only thing I do not like about it is that the front pockets do not have zippers, they are just pockets, so I do not feel confident enough to put anything important there, therefore it just feels like wasted pocket space.

Comments about Lowepro Stealth Reporter D400AW Bag:

I got the LowePro AW400 Stealth reporter some time ago specifically for day walks or quick outings. It fits a ton of stuff and get almost everything my AW450 Roller does into this bag. I find it quite handy in moving between crowds, sport events and so on although I must say if you pack as much and heavy as I do your shoulder does take some strain. Good thing it has a wide and well padded strap to carry. The bag can also be carried by hand or strapped to a roller and traveling with this bag through airports is easy. I have added some of the BlackRapid Joey's to it so it almost got that photographer's utility belt look! It is a well designed and good quality bag that safely and securely holds my Camera kit.

Comments about Lowepro Stealth Reporter D400AW Bag:

I am a professional photographer and needed a bigger bag so i could keep all my gear safe. I had the smaller version of this bag, the D300 AW and it was great but i just ended up having too much stuff. The D400 holds all my gear.

            Power pack
            Cards
            Small reflector
            580ex II
            etc...

The bag is well made and will just devour all your stuff. I wish there were a few more pockets, maybe on the sides of the bag for smaller things and a roll of tape or knife but overall the bag is great and keeps my stuff safe.

            Fill it up and go!

Maybe you can suffer if it's fully loaded and you have to carry out for a long time though

I returned the bag and got the 600 series as I plan on adding to my collection and thought it would be best to just go big and not have to worry about replacing the bag anytime soon.

Comments about Lowepro Stealth Reporter D400AW Bag:

I have a Lowepro Sling Bag (200AW) and really wanted something that i could rest on the ground and easily pull out my camera when needed. Lately I have been shooting sports and working out of a sling bag isn't great. This bag is awesome. I can fit my 70-200 F/4 on my 7D (hood reversed). With the zipper in the top panel, getting to my camera is a breeze. I hope to have the 70-200 f/2.8 soon and we'll see how that fits. I also have a 24-70, a 1.4x extender, a 430ex II flash, chargers and a cleaning kit with room for another lens. The built in weather cover is a great feature too. Having built-in memory card storage saves on having another card case and the padded storage compartment is big enough to hold any cell phone and larger picture storage devices. Construction is great and the padding on the strap is comfortable.

I can fit a couple of lenses, camera and all the extras needed. It has lots of modular dividers so that you can redivide the space as needed. I have found it slips off my shoulder easily but it has a waist belt that I have not yet used. Great bag is you have to shoot and move quickly!

Comments about Lowepro Stealth Reporter D400AW Bag:

I love the easy access zipper on top and how I can leave my 70-200 2.8 lens attached and slide my camera in or out of the bag in an upright position. In addition, the bag holds my second DSLR with lens attached (even my 70-300) and 1 or 2 more lenses or a small video camera, and my point and shoot camera fits in the front pocket as well. Overall, I feel like the bag is roomy and my gear is protected.

However, I do wish the bag had a few quick-access zippered pockets on the outside and inside, similar to the Nova 2 AW. Pockets that could hold dollar bills, IDs or tickets, credit cards, etc. The current pockets are roomy but you need to unbuckle the bag to access them. I was also hoping that a bag this size would have an outside mesh pocket that could easily hold a water bottle.

Although the bag isn't my dream bag, it does do the job pretty well.

Comments about Lowepro Stealth Reporter D400AW Bag:

I love that I can access my camera through the top, not having to put the bag down to unbuckle and unzip.

                      fits my D300 and 70-200 2.8, 70-300 4-5.6, 10-24mm, 28-105, 105mm macro and a flash.

the strap used for securing the camera to the body could be designed better. I only use it if I am carrying the bag for a long time. A waist strap would help to distribute the weight and secure the bag.

This product is good for sports and events photographers. I really like the bag. I will be buying another one for sports because I love this bag. It is a lot bigger than it seems. The only thing I don't like about it is how wide it is but over all its Great.

I must have a scale problem in my mind because when I got this back I was surprised at how big it actually was. Nevertheless, once I loaded all my gear into it, I was happy I had made the purchase. Best part about it is the rain cover. Global warmings got the temperature going buck wild and this thing has come in handy in places I never thought I'd get caught in a storm. Highly recommended!

I have used backpacks previously but wanted a top loading bag for all my gear. The build is good and there is good height to fit long lenses. I've got a 5dmk2, two primes, one wide angle zoom and 4 filters, cleaning cloths, remote and a few other bits and pieces. Its comfortable for me, but you wouldn't trek with this bag, but its not for that.

Comments about Lowepro Stealth Reporter D400AW Bag:

Overall I like the bag. It's comfortable and decent in size. The waste strap is great so it doesn't roll around on your side or back. The size is mainly height and not width. The main problem I have with the bag is when I put my 5D MkII in with a battery grip it doesn't fit as well as I would have hoped. With the MkII in I am able to fit a 24-70, a 70-200, 50 1.4, my flash, and I could probably fit another smaller lens in. The problem is when you have a lens hood it takes up a lot of space and you have to widen the slots to accommodate therefore making less room for more lenses. This bag is good for a wedding or event photographer looking for easy access to a body and a few lens's because of the zipper on top which gives easy access.

Comments about Lowepro Stealth Reporter D400AW Bag:

Though the bag is designed to hold a lot heavy cameras and will handle a 70-200mm lens upright, the strap is not designed to support a heavy load for long periods of time and their is not easy way to attach a waist strap. Being able to attach it to a roller cart is helpful less than 1% of the time. The flap is good for getting inside quickly with the single buckle but the buckle does not hold the strap so it loosens up in seconds. There are two long outer pockets which is a good idea but they are not even large enough to hold a flash like a SB800 much less a SB900 sized strobe. Small items need a separate storage pouch as with this bag everything just falls to the bottom of the pockets and is not easily found or retrieved. Hard to believe that the same company that makes the Pro Mag 2 bag would make something like this. The less expensive Nova bags by LowePro are cheaper and better designed and have waist straps.
