Umbrellas soften, broaden, and diminish the light output of any tungsten or flash light source. Umbrellas with a white interior will soften and weaken light more than an umbrella with a silver lining. A white umbrella without a black backing may also be used as a makeshift softbox, although the use of the light will not be as efficient as with a softbox.
Choosing umbrella size is determined by the size of the subject, and the strength of the light supply being used. Choosing an umbrella surface is as subjective as choosing a paint and brush.
This size is perfect for a 1 person head shot, or 3x4 ft product setup.

I shoot interiors professionally, and use the 30" Photoflex convertible on all of my monolights. The 30" diameter effectively diffuses the strobe's power and greatly reduces shadows but without losing clarity, as larger diameter umbrellas might. The black cover can be used to turn the umbrella from a shoot through to an interior bounce, useful when harder light is needed (and without light blowing back behind the strobe). The backer cloth can also be used as a quick gobo to partially cover the umbrella, thus reducing hotspots on ceilings, for example. It's easy to deploy and packs up small, fitting nicely into a monolight case. The one drawback I have with the umbrella is the tight fit it has on my Speedotron monolights -- either the diameter of the umbrella is too large or my lights are a bit out of plumb, but getting the Photoflex into and out of my lights takes some muscle.

Comments about Photoflex Convertible Umbrella-30":
I have owned a Photoflex 30" umbrella for about 2 years now as I learn the ropes of photography. I finally decided to buy a second one to expand my off-camera flash. It's a versitile umbrella, small enough to travel to location but large enough to spread the light. However, unlike my first one the support elements on this one are plastic. The support elements on my first one were all metal. I hope the plastic is just as durable as the metal model which is the only reason I dock a star. The convertible feature is a little bit of a pain to take apart and put back together, but you can't beat the size and simplicity.

This is exactly like the 40" umbrella from photoflex. Just in a smaller package. I take this everywhere. While not as short as the westcott collapsible 2in1 this umbrella allows me to close it down while using it in reflctive mode so that it become a sort of softbox. Great construction and light weight.
I keep one in the car at all times.

This little umbrella gives you a semi soft brollie light, a super soft shoot through light as well as a nice little fill - all in the same product! And it fits in your tripod bag!

use it with a speedlight usually, i find its quite cumbersome to take off and put back the backing to switch it from bounce to shoot through, so i might buy another plain shoot through umbrella

I ordered two of these and use them with my Canon 580ex II speedlites as modifiers.
Makes for a perfect small portable lighting setup.
Easy to use, easy to remove the black backing to shoot through.

I've used Photoflex equipment before, but this was the first umbrella I've purchased. For what I'm doing, it is the perfect size. It's very easy to remove the outer black cloth, and I appreciate that it came with a plastic sleeve for stroring.

I wanted one smaller than usual umbrella to use in portrait setups for back light/hair light. This is perfect for that. It is efficient, light weight, easily packed and seems to be very durable and well made as are all of the other PhotoFlex products I use. Very good quality in every aspect.

What I love most is the spokes are string plastic not metal. I've had umbrellas with metal spokes fall over and bend permanently, thus becoming useless. The plastic spokes on the Photoflex are strong and bend and spring back into place.

I use this small umbrella for location shoots....ie. babies, seniors, weddings, families. Fits in my Lowe Pro Roller Bag II just perfect and provides even clean light for groups of 5 or less. I use an Nikon SB*800 speedlight and lightweight bogen light stand. works like a champ! This is very durable as well my first one lasted 2 full years of full time location work and after the 3rd "spoke" broke it was time to buy another one.

I have always used photoflex umbrellas, I had to replace these umbrellas because a gust of wind knocked down my light set up and broke them even with weights around the stand. I will continue to use Photoflex products even if the wind blows.
