I use this pack for three things: I store my DSLR, extra lens, and most accessories in this. I use it as my airline carryon for camera, computer, toiletries, medication, etc. And I use it without the computer for carrying as a day-pack when doing photo sessions.

As a carry-on, the top compartment is a bit small. But the more expensive Adventure 10 isn't much larger (although the camera section is quite a bit larger).

Using it as a day pack, I would like to see some additional attachment points for carrying raingear, jacket, etc. The top compartment pretty much fills with lunch, first aid kit, and other misc items. I also found that strapping a moderately large tripod on the bottom was awkward. So I improvised by placing two legs in one of the mesh water bottle holders, then putting a strap around the top and over to the carrying handle. So it is now along the side, mounted vertically. I'm not sure of the durability of this, however.

Overall, this pack meets my needs, is very well constructed, and I can recommend it to others.

I own two other Tamrac bags which I am very pleased with. I needed a larger bag that I could still work out of and use while traveling, that would not only carry my kit, but would allow me to bring my laptop and other necessities on the road, so from my previous experience my first choice was Tamrac. I thought that this bag was the ticket, but I knew I was wrong almost immediately after receiving it. Upon opening the bag to remove the packing I noted how small the upper compartment is, but more concerning is that the floor of the upper compartment was not sewn into place, but held in place with Velcro. I instantly thought of dust/dirt and/or crumbs from things tossed into this compartment migrating down to the camera compartment, unsatisfactory. Next, upon opening the camera compartment I found it to be overly stiff and difficult to get in to. Though the large buckle, heavy zipper and TWO clips attaching the supporting strap across the compartment door would definitely insure that the compartment was securely closed, it also makes quick access to your camera impossible. You cannot access your camera without completely removing the back pack and setting it down to open the compartment. The side entrance to the laptop compartment is cumbersome and awkward to insert a laptop. I have a 15" iMac Pro and though it fit well, it just felt like there was too much pushing and pulling to get it in and out, and I didn't have anything else in the bag yet. Which returned me to the small upper compartment which just got smaller when I put my power cord in it.

The build on this bag is as good as my other Tamrac bags, except for the divider between the upper and lower compartments. Maybe the thought is that you can carry and access your camera with a really "long" lens on it through the upper compartment, not sure why else it wouldn't be sewn. If you plan to hike with a tripod you will have to order the accessory straps (not included).

If you are used to working from a "sling pack" or backpack that you can access your camera while still on a shoulder (like I am) and your intent is to travel and work out of this bag, this is not the bag for you. I returned this bag and purchased another that is just perfect for my needs.

Comments about Tamrac 5549 Adventure 9 Backpack (Red/Black):

I loved this pack because of the red color. That way I could see someone running off with my gear! But seriously, this pack is great for accomodating my 17" laptop and all my necessary photography gear, plus extras. The perfect pack for a day trip, complete with snacks & drinks! :) The only thing I've found wrong with it is that the zippers on the camera compartment are sometimes difficult to access when the compartment is open, but I suppose it is because of the flaps that cover the zippers for added security and weather protection. So hey, I'll take it!

Comments about Tamrac 5549 Adventure 9 Backpack (Red/Black):

I use the Adventure 9 for short photo hikes of up to 3 total miles. The waist belt has insufficient padding for longer trips. I use the laptop compartment for carrying a raincoat or wind breaker as I have no need for a computer on the trail. It will not accomodate my 17" Toshiba Satellite P305 anyway. An extra shirt or rainpants plus some snacks will fit in the upper compartment. The side stretch pockets are good for water bottles or trekking poles.

The camera compartment is well padded and the dividers are easily adjustable. Currently it's housing a Pentax K7 DSLR, 16-45mm f4 zoom lens, 50mm and 70mm primes, plus filters, cleaning cloth, etc.

This item's big drawback is it's lack of an attached rain cover. In a storm the pack will get soaked.

Comments about Tamrac 5549 Adventure 9 Backpack (Red/Black):

I have held off for about 3 months to write this review so that I could be sure about it. This is, with out a doubt, the best camera bag that I have used. It can fit everything that I need for a day...computer, camera, small items.

I used to carry two separate bags and that got very cumbersome so I started looking for a better option. I settled on this bag for two reasons. It had the space for my camera (Nikon D80) and a set of lenses; and it could fit my 17" MacbookPro.

The camera section in the bottom is sturdy and well padded and easily configurable for carrying items. Right now it has a 70-200 f/2.8 Canon lense; Canon 450D body; Nikon D80 with 18-55 f/2.8 (attached); and a 18-200 Nikon zoom.

The shoulder straps are well padded and allow the load to site very comfortably. There is a waist strap that I occasionally use; it is not padded but that does not take away from the rating.

The laptop compartment zipper is water resistant and the nylon fabric is excellent...heavy weight fabric that will not ware out.

If you are on the fence about this product...don't be. It cannot be beat for the price and quality.

I use this backpack to keep my photo and netbook gear all in one place. This way, I just grab the packback and off I go with everything I might need on my trips.
It is well sectioned to allow all your equipment to be neatly tucked away and protected by padding, but still easily gotten to.
I keep papers, notebook, manuals etc. in the top compartment and it would be nice to have a meshlined pocket there to hold all that stuff together.

This bag has a lot of room. I can fit my d90, 4 lenses, 2 speedlights and a lot of accessories. I can also cary my laptop and a few personal things...and it looks pretty nice. Oh yeah, and it's completely customizeable with velcro dividers everywhere. I know there are other bags that have aluminum framing and mesh back panels for airflow, and for the money, I wish this one did too--but I can't complain. It's a great bag.

I needed a bag to carry my photo gear as well as some personal items. This 3-compartment bag is simply ideal:
                    - it is carry-on luggage size, so you can fly with it
                    - The photogear compartment fits my D700 + 3 premium lenses+ a camcorder + chargers for all that

Bottom compartment houses the camera with medium length lens. Side pockets work for two other lenses. The canvas is very sturdy with good solid zippers. It reminds me of a good hiking backpack. I was happy to see my 17" laptop fit snugly in the compartment on the backside. The upper compartment is adequate for the computer power cord and other gear. It's nice how they have flash drive pockets with tabs that indicate used and unused on the inside of the top compartment flap. I will use the backpack for carrying my gear on the plane.

I've owned this bad for about 90 days now. I carry 1 SLR, 3 lenses and a few accessories along with a very heavy laptop PC. The zippers work great. It is very well constructed. It is comfortable to use, either on one shoulder or as a full backpack. For me, it is the perfect size. I fly multiple airlines with this bag week after week.

I have my Canon 50D with 18-200mm lens. Battery Grip, Flash and several filters with room to spare. I also carry my 17" laptop. The backpack is well made and I have had many people come up to me and ask to see it. I highly recommend this backpack. The zipper handles are a bit hard to get at sometimes once the backpack is fully open but it is still a great unit...!

Have had SLR's for over 25 years. Was looking for a bag for my new cannon 40d with the 128mm lens. On the big side. Camera in fits nicely and still have room for extras like a lite jacket ect. Camera compartment outside walls have velcroe all around making it easy to custom arrange the inside dividers to my liking. Many bags I look at did not have that limiting the set ups you could do. Especialy like the inside velcro attached restraining strap. Great for keeping the camera from accidentally falling out. Would have liked to be able to strap on a tripode on the side. But over all a great bag.
