I collect old military items including photos and negatives. Recently I acquired 380 glass plate negatives pertaining to the Spanish American War and early Logging they range in sizes from 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" up to 8" x 10". I am totally illiterate when it comes to electronic equipment and decided to have them scanned by a professional. The cost was going to be well over $1000.00. I thought that a tad high, so did some research, asked a few questions, swallowed hard, and ordered my 700. I COULDN'T BE HAPPIER WITH PURCHASE! Set-up took only minutes and with-in one hour I was getting beautiful results. Many of the plates were damaged and so dark that I could barely see an image holding them up to a strong light. With the SIMPLE contrast and light adjustments on the machine, every single plate was salvaged! I have never completed a survey for any product, but felt compelled to share my experience about this one.

I bought five of these scanners two years ago, and every model had a lot of dust trapped under the glass at the time of purchase. I exchanged most of them, but even the exchanged models still had a few large pieces of dust stuck under the glass with no way to remove them. Perhaps these were specs of glue from the assembly process. Apart from having to remove specs with Photoshop, it is an excellent scanner, although built-in dust is beyond disappointing. And with every Epson scanner I've purchased over the years, with very little use, scanning the white backing always produces darkening at the top few inches. I've addressed this with techs before and they always assure me that the darkening isn't typical. I've experienced this with every v700 I own and with older models from Epson on a variety of Macs. I hope the quality control has improved, because I'm about to buy more, lacking a better choice. The specs are great and Epson is a great company, but it not perfect if you have an eye for detail.

Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Scanner:

Bt. this for scanning 35mm trans, 2/14 trans. and 2/14 color negs. transfer to DVD and to viewing on 47" tv. Using Epson software for 35MM and was easy, pretty fast and 900 DPI ok resolution.

For 2/14 color negs. using the Silver Fsat SE software that came with the scanner. Over complicated but after a hard study, works better for me. Batch scanning is good ...resolution set at 600 DPI and is OK for DVD use on TV.

The Silver Fast SE is a tough learn for a guy in his 90s but worked best for my 55 yr. old Ektacolor 2/14" color negs. Even with batch scanning of 6 at a time, it'll take a lot of time to scann in couple hundred negs. I use Photoshop 5.5 to correct on most. The trouble with the SE is the supper German efficiency which seems to end up with too many menus to complete a scan. But, we don't have much of a choice.

Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Scanner:

Upon seeing the 1st 35mm slide shot in 1958 up on the screen at about 11 x 14" I flipped. Then as time went on i got a little pickier. They are not quite as sharp as I had hoped. Some of the mts. are raized up a bit at one end, possibly affecting focus. Tried taping but nothing changes. I don't know hoe much leeway there is. I am confident the 2 1/4 color negs will scan well. Used the Epson built in software and works fine...noo problems. Correct with Photo shop 5.5. Was not aware of interior lid lock so had to resolve the rattling noise with ok FAQ answer. My error.

I need to scan from 35mm to 4x5 negatives from 1940 to present. From my Dads boxes of lifelong photos. This unit will last a lifetime, and scan times are good, even with targeted files to over 100mb's for LF negatives. The Epson Scan has plenty of adjustmets for Exposure, Contrast, Color Correction and also has a good basic unsharp mask. For Color Film, Digital Ice can be a plus. I have tried VueScan9, BUT, honestly, I perfer the AUTOMATIC framing for multple negatives that the Epson Scan software offers, MUCH FASTER than using VueScan, with an easier interface. If I had one gripe.... an adjustable film holder insert for the 4x5 holder, to hold odd size negatives from the past. I will have to make my own mask for the many 2-1/4 x 3-1/4 negatives. It is a major investment (it will hold it's value for a while). BUT, if you shoot 120-8x10, it is well worth the price!!

      V700 Scanner

      By Gildersleeve

Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Scanner:

On numerous occasions over the last 4-5 years, I have been asked to restore old family photographs for friends. The two things made that possible were photoshop and my Epson V700 scanner. Easy, intuitive and the best quality scanner on the market for the price. I have always gotten the highest photo quality prints from a Epson printers, not so much on the other brands. So, when it became appearant that I would soon be in the market for a true photo quality scanner, I checked into the "other" brands, but I purchased the Epson V700! :)

      excellant scannr

      By Phil

Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Scanner:

I have appreciated the ease with which I have been able to scan the images I have been scanning with the Epson Perfection V700. So far it has been less "glitchy" and temperamental than my previous scanner and has allowed me to use the automatic scan mode with most 35mm slides I have been scanning. The other modes have also been good to use when it was required. I am a retired professional photojournalist who worked for a couple of newspapers for over 20 years and also worked as a studio and location photographer for a major Utah corporation which produced international publications. I began my interest in photography in the late 1940's as a cub scout and have tens of thousands of personal images in black and white as well as color negatives and slides, all in a number of formats, including 4x5, 120 (and 620), 35mm, 127, etc.., and I appreciate the relative ease with which I am able to make the scans that I desire. I'm in the process of trying to digitize what I have to preserve and organize these images. I have been very pleasantly surprised at how well the V700 scanner has allowed me to accomplish this with reasonable speed and quality of the results. I am still shooting with film but realize some day I will have to go fully digital. But until then, I will continue to need and use this very capable scanner.

Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Scanner:

This jewell has served me for several years, and is indispensable. I have scanned numerous old prints and can depend upon excellent results. It's slide and film scans make a device dedicated to this purpose superfluous unless one is aiming at very expensive drum scans and the like. And of course for low volume everyday scanning and copying it is just fine. A dependable superior product.

      Epson V700 Photo Scanner

      By David

      from Rockvile, MD

Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Scanner:

I had a couple thousand old slides I wanted to capture digitally. In my research, I read many good reviews about the Epson V700 scanner, so I bought one. The project is now done, and by my experience all the good reviews are justified. If I had to do it all over again, I'd do it the same way. The scanner gave me control, and it saved me time and money. Scanning in slides is a tedious chore, but once you get the hang of it, it's a no-brainer. I sat at the computer listening to my favorite music, downloading pictures. Not a bad way to spend a few hours a week. Now I'm capturing old family photos from as early as the 1930s and they come out great. Some of the photos have degraded considerably, but the scanner gives a good degree of control, so some of them come out better than the actual photo. For a major makeover, you will probably need a full-blown Photoshop type program, but that is beyond what I want. If my progeny want to fix them up later, now they can. Oh, I chose not to use the ICE feature. It does clean up the image in some respects, but to my eye, it fuzzes up the edges. Not a good trade-off for me. For some it might be. Anyway, good purchase. All the pictures came out better than I thought they would when I bought the scanner. Exceeded expectations.

I considered many film and slide scanners. Some which were very highly rated are no longer supported by their manufacturers. In the end the Epson V700 proved to be an excellent film and slide scanner with the added benefit of being a flat bed scanner as well. VueScan is the software I use with this scanner.

Excellent Scanner for 35mm and prints

      By RogersHSV

      from Northern AL, USA

Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Scanner:

Have had this for about 9 months and have put about 1000 35mm images through mostly at 3200 dpi. Overall I'm pleased with the results and ease of scanning. The thumbnail scans don't get all of the frame, so I've been marque'ing each frame manually a bit oversize and cropping later in Photoshop. Also have to watch for Kodachrome so I don't waste time on Digital ICE for those scans. ICE is great for cleaning up Ektachrome, but it does add to the time needed per scan - a full tray of 12 at 3200 dpi will run about an hour, but it's worth the time to avoid manual spot cleaning later. This was a bit expensive compared to some other options, but has been worth it for me.

      Great Scanner

Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Scanner:

We've had this scanner for about 6 months now and this is the best scanner we have had to date. Simple to use and does a fantastic job. We scan color positive film, B&W and color negative film and prints with extremely high quality results. Color balances positives easily and accurately with the color dropper tool, in fact the scanned images are actually often better than the original images as it restores their original splendor when operated correctly. We actually use this scanner to scan museum quality negs and transparencies. This scanner scans everything from 35mm slide film to 8x10 negatives and positives with no problems. Our first job we used this scanner on paid for the entire scanner. We compared other models and brands and selected The Epson Perfection V700 Photo Scanner and could not be happier. Has been worth every penny.

Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Scanner:

I have used this scanner for several years. The main reason I purchased it was to scan my 35mm slides and family photos-to digitize all of them. It took me over a year, but the slide holders and software made it less than difficult. I have also scanned tons of family records into various formats, mainly jepg and pdf. The newer software, which I have downloaded over the past few years, is much more user friendly. If this was to burn out tomorrow I would replace it with the same model.

Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Scanner:

I've had positive experiences with the quality of the scans I've achieved with this scanner. I am NOT a computer whiz and so some of the settings were initially difficult for me to understand, but the point is that I finally did understand most of them. You're given many options how to store the file, as far as formatting and degree of resolution. Results are superb and enable very high level of photo restoration when used in conjunction with software like Photoshop, e.g., or direct printing. My only criticism is that the photo holders (for film-based materials like transparencies, or negatives) could stand to be a bit more robust. The plastic parts fractured in a couple of minor-but-pesky instances, with use. Otherwise, the scanner itself is very sturdy, with just one simple push-button to activate it, and software to control its settings on your computer.

Bt. this for scanning 35mm trans, 2/14 trans. and 2/14 color negs. transfer to DVD and to viewing on 47" tv.

Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Scanner:

On numerous occasions over the last 4-5 years, I have been asked to restore old family photographs for friends. The two things made that possible were photoshop and my Epson V700 scanner. Easy, intuitive and the best quality scanner on the market for the price. I have always gotten the highest photo quality prints from a Epson printers, not so much on the other brands. So, when it became appearant that I would soon be in the market for a true photo quality scanner, I checked into the "other" brands, but I purchased the Epson V700! :)

        excellant scannr

        V700 Does everything-almost

Comments about Epson Perfection V700 Photo Scanner:

I have used this scanner for several years. The main reason I purchased it was to scan my 35mm slides and family photos-to digitize all of them. It took me over a year, but the slide holders and software made it less than difficult. I have also scanned tons of family records into various formats, mainly jepg and pdf. The newer software, which I have downloaded over the past few years, is much more user friendly. If this was to burn out tomorrow I would replace it with the same model.

        Epson Perfection V700 Photo Scanner

        By craigo

        from Agoura Hills, CA

After scanning over 32,000 negatives, my first V700 is still going strong. So much so, that I just bought a second one for the day when the first scanner eventually does wear out. This is a dependable and consistent scanner. I give nothing but high marks in every department to the V700 as a negative scanner!
