International Orders*The straight viewing Fieldscope ED50 13-30x50 Spotting Scope from Nikon is a compact and lightweight spotting scope with a 50mm ED (Extra-low Dispersion) objective lens for chromatic aberration. Nikon especially developed ED glass to provide precise optical color correction.
The ED50 scope is offered as straight or angled viewing design. Most users will prefer angled scopes because they are both simple to use for birds perched high above the viewer as well as easily simultaneously shared amongst users of differing heights. But some will prefer the straight viewing models, for these are much easier to use when hunting down the object of interest in the first place.
Nikon's Fieldscope line of spotting scopes are premium offerings to compete with the best of sports optics manufactured in Japan or Europe. You choose your options based on concerns for mass and budget: straight or angled, objective diameter, and whether to spring for the ED (extra-low dispersion) glass for more favorable appreciation of highly detailed subjects.
All of Nikon's spotting scope line is backed up by the "No-Fault" 25-year warranty. Regardless of what happens to your scope-even of your own negligence-Nikon will repair or replace (at their option) your scope for just $10 plus the return shipping costs.
Note! Covered by Nikon's 25-year no-fault repair/replacement policy

Comments about Nikon Fieldscope ED50 13-30x50 Spotting Scope (Straight Viewing):
We are using this for birding. It is very light weight making it easily portable for hikes when we don't want to drag around a big heavy scope. It is a nice cross between binos and a full sized scope, able to be hand-held but more powerful than binos. The case it comes with is not field-use friendly. It has to be totally removed from the bag-like case to be used and is somewhat slippery to hold. Could not find an "on scope" protective case in the US but have 1 coming from the UK. Hope it works.

The light weight impressed my fellow birdwatchers. Glasses wearers need to fold back the eyepiece housing. The angle body version is the same price.

Comments about Nikon Fieldscope ED50 13-30x50 Spotting Scope (Straight Viewing):
This scope has very good image quality and is small and less expensive compared to scopes with similar quality. Just what I wanted! My friend bought an expensive 65mm scope of a different brand without ED glass, and the image had strong magenta frames around all objects on the horizon. Not so with this scope, the image is clear like water. Also, with a 50mm objective lens it is brighter at 30x than any 60mm or even 85mm scope is at 60x zoom.
Very light weight makes it convenient to carry in any situation, even if you are going long distances over steep terrain and need to save your pack weight for other things. I just carried it up a steep mountain where I found an old undisturbed wreck that proved no one had been there in at least 25 years.
Downsides:
-working the zoom and focus isn't as intuitive as I would like.
-lens caps keep falling off, I replaced the objective lens cap with a screw on aluminum lens cap after I lost it, much better, never falls off. The eye lens cap still falls off because I haven't lost it yet.
-not quite as sharp at 30x zoom as at 13x, but I should point out that this is a) not that big a deal, b) common even on very expensive zoom lenses, and c) you can replace the 13x-30x eyepiece with a fixed 27x eyepiece with great image quality (more than enough to make up for the reduced "x") if it is important to you.

Comments about Nikon Fieldscope ED50 13-30x50 Spotting Scope (Straight Viewing):
I bought this scope for my wife and son who have quickly becoming avid birders.
We needed a scope for short day hikes and longer backpacking trips that 1. was compact and lightweight, and 2. provided a clear image of small objects in the distance.
This scope more than met my expectations.
A lightweight tripod helps stabilize the scope and the image is crisp and clear.
My son plans to use his Nikon 3000 to digiscope.

Comments about Nikon Fieldscope ED50 13-30x50 Spotting Scope (Straight Viewing):
I bought this scope for all purpose use hoping that it would perform well on 75% of intended uses. I wanted it for the shooting range, wildlife observation especially in a deer stand, and for law enforcement purposes. Although it is lightweight and small, the ED lens are terrific as they produce bright and sharp images whether close up or at longer distances. Focusing is easy and fast. Very useful with or without a tripod. There were no significant cons, but a little more eye relief for glasses would make it a 100% plus scope for me.

Comments about Nikon Fieldscope ED50 13-30x50 Spotting Scope (Straight Viewing):
I actually stole this scope at a Gander Mountain store cheap, and I would have never believed what it is capable of. It truely is a full-up Fieldscope with optics on par with its larger brothers. It is light and I read many reviews saying the bird freaks are leaving their Fieldscope 82 EDs at home and taking this one to the field to save weight. I'm genuinely amazed and that doesn't happen very often.
