I bought this scanner a few years ago, and I struggled to get good scans. Recently, I downloaded the latest scanning software from Pacific Image, and what a difference! I get GREAT scans from this little device, good enough that I'm going to use my old Nikon camera system until slide film is no longer available. It's that good! But, you have to get the latest scanning software. For those that are disappointed, don't give up! Just spend a little more time with it!

Comments about Pacific Image Prime-Film 3600u Film Scanner:

If you're the type that would have enjoyed working with a darkroom in the predigital days then this is a great scanner. Pressing a scan button is one simple step in a process of many complicated steps that you must be passionately interested in to get great results. If you're interested then you already know the details from the specs and from other reviews. If you're not that interested then take your project to a professional just as you would have in the predigital days. Digital has made photography affordable to more people, but hasn't made more people good at it. I've gotten results with this scanner that rival my 12.5 megapixel SLR without much trouble. This was from 5 year old negatives. 25 year old negatives are presenting more of a challenge but I'm suceeding with them. I am having trouble getting slides to look right, which is confusing since you would think with positives "what you see is what you get" but I don't have much experience with them.

Comments about Pacific Image Prime-Film 3600u Film Scanner:

Out of the box, the unit did not work when connected. Then I saw a footnote saying that a multi-function printer if connected to the PC needs to be unplugged if the scanner has to work. That is highly stupid. I don't know why a USB device would have such a restriction. The Software GUI is very rudimentary. Even High School kids should be able to do better than that. There is no significant change in scanning with different resolutions. The choice of the silm companies is too small. Did not yet scan a positive film, so don't know if that works at all with this device.

This scanner won't make great images out of bad slides or negatives. You have to experiment with the slide and film types to get the color right and it is a little slow. All that being said, it produces good images from slides and negative that can be printed 4x6. If you need to scan some old slides or negatives, this scanner will give you good images without breaking the bank.

This is a great scanner for the money. It scans well and relatively quickly. The scanner has trouble with darker slides though. I also found that the software included is lousy. I downloaded vuescan and ended up buying it. The scans I am getting using Vuescan with this scanner are incredible. I have scanned about 100 slides so far and they are all great. Other reviewers complain about the scanner working and just quitting. They don't know how to use a computer or understand what USB ports are all about. If you know how to use a computer and are willing to spend the 80 bucks on Vuescan, you have a great scanner for film.

Comments about Pacific Image Prime-Film 3600u Film Scanner:

Picked this up to archive some family slides, as well as to convert film negatives to digital. Does well with black and white negatives, not so well with color. As for slides... after playing with different settings I find that the color still isn't very good.
