Zeiss Ikon 35mm Rangefinder Manual Focus Camera Body - Black

B&H # ZEZIB Mfr # 1397-805
No Longer Available

The Zeiss Ikon 35mm Rangefinder Manual Focus Camera Body combines a classical design with easy-to-use operation. Features and controls are designed to make practical photography comfortable and free from unpleasant surprises caused by the camera. Manual or auto TTL exposure metering as well as an AE-lock function gives you complete control of the exposure situation.

Unlike 35 mm SLR camera viewfinders that can only show little more than 90% of what will be recorded on film, the Zeiss Ikon viewfinder lets you see the area that surrounds the actual image giving you greater possibilities and confidence as you compose each image. What's more, the triangulation rangefinder combined with a viewfinder base that is the widest available means that you can expect extreme accuracy and wide-angle focusing precision.

Because it features an M-mount, you can use existing Leica or Voigtlander M-mount type lenses, or upgrade to Carl Zeiss lenses, over time.

Clear LED Exposure scale for correct exposure
Vertical-travel electronic metal focal plane shutter
Accepts high-quality Carl Zeiss T* ZM-mount lenses with focal length 15 to 85 mm

Comments about Zeiss Ikon 35mm Rangefinder Camera Body -Black:

I thought this camera was going to replace my bessa r4m because of the large bright viewfinder. After running a roll through the camera I realized the focusing patch would disappear if your eye was not perfectly centered. Also, the exposure lock button is stupidly placed in the center of the camera and nowhere near the shutter. I had a long reach with my thumb to push the exposure lock button. It upsets me that such a beautiful, large, and bright viewfinder is put to waste on a poorly designed camera body. If u can live with these faults then try the zeiss ikon. I couldn't.

Comments about Zeiss Ikon 35mm Rangefinder Camera Body -Black:

I just registered my Zeiss Ikon rangefinder body and lens after getting my first roll of Tri-X and scans back from the lab. The body has a good heft to it, although from what I read, not near the feel of a Leica M6 or M7.

Fit and finish are very good. Would like to have seen a similar black finish on this body like the Fuji X Pro-1 instead of paint. That being said, the application of the black paint is done very well. My guess is that it's baked on enamel powder.

I love the feel and action of this camera. Select F stop, shutter speed, or let it select the shutter speed for you with its AE aperture feature, manual focus and whamo! Snap the picture and move on. No need to check in any rear display screen or fiddle with white balance or ISO. This is pure photography folks, and the results are stunning.

Had the finish been anodized, I would be giving this camera 5ive stars. I'm very happy with this product overall. This is a great compliment to my X Pro-1 system.

Digital is great, but film is the real RAW format and the look is simply on a level all its own. Shoot digital, but get this camera too.

Comments about Zeiss Ikon 35mm Rangefinder Camera Body -Black:

This is a great traditional rangefinder camera. Focus is a snap with it's bright and contrasty rangefinder (as long as eye is centered in viewfinder). The frame lines are bright and uncluttered. The meter works well and the vast majority of my exposures are where they should be.
The feel is first rate. It is a quiet camera, not as much as an M leica, but not that different. If you are a camera fondler you may prefer the Leica M series, but for actual picture taking I would prefer this for ease of use, ease of loading, and cost (compared to the 3x more expensive Leica M7. The only downside to camera is LED shutter speeds are hard to see in very bright light and the shutter lock swich could have been better designed. These are minor criticisms of a very nice camera, that compares much closer to a Leica M7 then a Bessa R series. I intend to keep and use for the forseeable future, as long as fim is still available at a reasonable cost. Just think of the money you can save on computer upgrades, storage upgrades, software upgrades, etc!

Comments about Zeiss Ikon 35mm Rangefinder Camera Body -Black:

I just purchased the ZI in black finish from B&H and I love it! I now own a Leica MP, M6 and CL, also the Voigtlander R4M and R3A in addition to the ZI. All are obviously nice cameras and will get the job done but the ZI may have the best of all worlds as far as great user machines go. I love the large viewfinder, the LED shutter speeds are easy to read, the body is nice and light, grippy and slim. It handles very well indeed and the shutter is only a tiny bit noisier than the Leica, nothing to worry about. There are some similarities to the Voigtlanders such as the bright viewfinder but I think this is going to make a superb travel camera, especially paired with an older and very lightweight 35mm f1.4 Summilux.

Comments about Zeiss Ikon 35mm Rangefinder Camera Body -Black:

when talking about rangefinders, leicas seem to be the point of measure, i don't judge this camera by leica standards, instead i'll just compared them as any camera in this segment. the price is the first attractive point, and when you finally get to hold camera you'll really enjoy it. it's light, simple to use, elegant and feels pretty good mechanicaly, smooth on operation. the meter concurs with my other cameras, and my leica glass fits perfectly. loading film is pretty standard, not better than leica, it's just that a leica loads film the same way for the past 70 years (just open up a III series). comparing to the M7 i like the Zeiss more only because it uses half the batteries, the other thing i like better than leica is the metal shutter curtain, although leica makes their point on cloth shutter because of tradition and silence, i feel that a metal curtain is more resistant to daily use, and won't burn a whole if exposed to light for long periods. the viewfinder is very easy to read and frame, except for my only complain about this camera, the focusing window is less contrasty than other cameras, again leica (m6, m7, mp, and finally the grand daddy m3) but only in low light situations, nothing to worry about, but that why i give it 4 stars. i only wish that sales are good on this camera because i love rangefinders and would like to see new products and more competition. other companies should consider this system as well. i think that i would be a dream come true to see entries from nikon and canon, just like in the sixties, wouldn't you? Zeiss, great product, keep up the good work.

Comments about Zeiss Ikon 35mm Rangefinder Camera Body -Black:

Not many bodies are as sturdy as a Leica M, but I was pleasantly surprised at the solid feel of the ZI. The viewfinder brings back the glory days of 35mm film cameras, with the bright, clear finder. With the 50/2 Planar, the framelines make for easy composition. It's a keeper for me.
