The ADL 600 from Presonus is a two-channel, high voltage tube microphone preamplifier designed by Anthony DeMaria. The unit is a Class A discrete design with three military-grade vacuum tubes per channel, operating at voltages of +/-300V power rails for maximum tube tonality and headroom. The unit was designed for the ultimate in sonic performance, ease of use and input flexibility.

The input selector allows for selection between Hi-Z instrument input, line input and four different microphone impedances. A high pass filter is a rotary switch with three filter settings for passively controlling room rumble and low frequency noise. The input gain attenuator is a military-grade rotary switch delivering 5dB step increments and a total preamplifier gain of over 72dB, sufficient for even the most demanding microphone application.

The output stage is controlled by a fully variable conductive plastic attenuator delivering +/-10dB of fine tune trim adjustment. The ADL 600 includes 48V phantom power and a -20dB pad per channel. Also included are fast-acting eight-segment LED meters for the accurate detection of fast transients and peaks, as well as large high quality analog VU meters for metering output level.

There are no op-amps or integrated circuits (IC's) in the signal path to ensure the purest sound possible. The dual transformer design also ensures ultra low noise operation with maximum common mode rejection.

Comments about PreSonus ADL600 Tube Preamp:

Mainly a musician, I am not a techy engineer but I feel confident that am at the point where I am not a novice anymore. However, I do my homework and read about what is out there, look into recommendations when it comes from experienced engineers, anytime I look to buy expensive gear.

My purchase of the ADL600 is the result of a recommendation from an engineer from the Midwest that has the ability to AB various preamps from companies such as Neve, API, Avalon, Universal Audio, you name it. He stated that it is a great all around preamp that can be used for various instruments, and that the AKG 414 is a really great match with this preamp.

I wasn’t sure at first, as the engineer that I am working with here in NJ area recommended some of the other top end preamps on the market. The NJ engineer has been in the business 20+ years and is very highly regarded. So After doing more research and talking to the engineer in the Midwest, I took the plunge and bought the ADL600. When I brought it to the NJ studio to set it up for sounds, particularly distorted guitar and clean bass, and the engineer was impressed with it. The SM57, Sennheiser MD421, AKG 414 mics all sounded great through it.
