Comments about Lexicon Alpha Studio Desktop Recording Studio:

This is an excellent box if you need one for audio inputs and outputs for your system. Excellent sound quality, easy to use. Mac Friendly. I have used it for recording, web streaming and as just a higher quality output than a headphone jack.

The only down part is there is no phantom power so if you need to use a condenser mic then you will need to either buy the Lambda or an external phantom power injector.

Comments about Lexicon Alpha Studio Desktop Recording Studio:

I wanted this for podcasting and recording skype conversations. I have two perfectly nice, serviceable mics, needed something so they'd interface with my Macbook Pro. The Lexicon Alpha worked OK after some fighting (it works with Mac, but the documentation is spotty and hard to find), but the volume comes through so low on Skype as to be useless, in GarageBand there's a really awful buzz (again due to low volume I think) and in Audacity it's impossible to record in mono. So I returned it and got a Blue Icicle instead for less money, which is what I advise you to do if you're like me.

Comments about Lexicon Alpha Studio Desktop Recording Studio:

True, this unit looks more professional than many others, however the knobs and gains have various problems. The unit has insufficient input gain to get near digital full scale using a Shure SM58, the input gain set at maximum and screaming into the mic. The output will clip if the the output gain is set past the halfway mark with a digital full scale signal coming in. They should have put some headroom in the analog output stage.

Comments about Lexicon Alpha Studio Desktop Recording Studio:

Before I start this review, let me say this is still a good product. I purchased this because my normal interface was out for repair and I couldn't go that long with no recording equipment. I saw this and it seemed to do everything that I needed. I didn't really worry about the quality of the pre-amp or the fact that there's no phantom power, because I was planning on using my external pre-amp that has phantom power. That's the where the problem began. I tried plugging in my external preamp, but I was getting basically no signal, so I tried multiple cables and still the same problem. After trying many different types of cables, lexicon support, and reading online forums, I still haven't found a solution. The only way I can get signal with my pre-amp plugged up is to turn the volume up on the channel I have my pre-amp plugged into, which mixes my pre-amp and the lexicon pre-amp's together and that's not what I need. I end up with a gritty and far from clear signal. Basically, if you're looking for something very cheap and simple and you're just needing to plug up a dynamic mic or plug in some type of hi-z instrument, this product would be great for you. If you're wanting to use an external pre-amp with it, I'd suggest saving your money and finding something better suited for your needs.

Comments about Lexicon Alpha Studio Desktop Recording Studio:

I just upgraded to some Mackie studio monitors and I needed balanced outputs, so I first tried an iO|2 Express from Alesis, but after too much troubleshooting, I found the Lexicon and it worked right out of the box! I would give it 5 stars but it's just USB 1.1 and only one microphone input. The included Pantheon Reverb is fantastic! Only Cubase can use it, but it works with LE5. It has extra outputs that I will use to run as an effects send.
