Morris Midi Slave Di - DC Slave Flash for Digital Cameras (Black)

The Morris Midi Slave Di is a DC slave flash unit that can be used for lighting small groups of people, as an accent, or background light. It features a standard (1/4") tripod mount socket, and built in slave.

Two slave settigs allow this unit to be used with either standard cameras, or even with digital cameras that use a pre-flash. The N-mode is for single flash triggered by the camera's flash and syncs with the main flash. The P-mode is for cameras with pre-flash. This sets the slave to sync with your camera's main flash, not the pre-flash.

Highly-Effective Sync with Digital Preflash Systems
The Midi Slave Di has been tested to be fully compatible with Canon, Nikon, & Pentax preflash systems (both pop-up and shoe-mounted flashes).  It does not work, however, with the Olympus system or with Sony's built-in camera flashes.
Can be used with Morris' suction cup mount for convenient placement.

This flash gives you the ability to get creative and improve almost all of your pictures.

This is one of about five slave flashes I found that will work with any digital point-and-shoot camera. Not just any slave flash will work.

I hate blurry pictures, so I always turn on the force-flash on all of the cameras I use, especially indoors. However, the built-in flash gives your pictures a flat look and only reaches 11-15 feet, giving your pictures uneven lighting. By pointing the Morris midi Slave Flash Di at the ceiling, I can get much better results, and much more even lighting.

This flash is very sensitive, and will work from the other side of even the biggest rooms. The slave just has to "See" some of the light from the flash on your camera to work. It will still work even if you cover it with your hand or several pieces of paper. It works great if you place it behind your subject too, giving some great effects.

At first I thought the construction quality would be a problem, but it has held up very well. The stamp "Made in Japan" gives me more confidence than I would have if it were made in China.

The one limitation this flash has is that it will go off whenever it sees a flash, whether it is from your camera, or not. I used this at a graduation ceremony once, and it kept going off for other people's pictures and made it almost unusable in that situation.

This flash has a HI/LO switch, and on the LO setting it recycles much faster. There is an ON/OFF switch and a N-mode/P-mode switch which lets you compensate if your camera is Normal, or uses a Pre-flash. The flash includes a snap-on diffuser which is very useful. Uses 2 AA batteies.

All in all, I would reccomend this to anyone who wants better indoor pictures, especially if you used to use a more advanced camera and are dissapointed with the limitations of your small point-and-shoot.

Works as advertised for second slave flash. Very useful idea. Battery door looks a little tenuous. Instruction sheet is sparse on details (e.g. an asterisk implies don't switch a mode when unit is on, but not printed on unit itself). Overall I am satisfied, price is better than at Morris website.

Comments about Morris Midi Slave Di - DC Flash (Black):

I did not want to buy a bulky flash for my Fuji X10. I received 2 of these as a birthday gift and I have been impressed so far. At P-mode X10 captures the flash from these slaves, even at 1/4000 sec exposure!
        - easy to carry
        - easily triggered
        - two light settings Lo/Hi
        - stands upright, at 45 degrees, horizontal, on a tripod
        - has a front light showing it's ready to fire
        - powerful enough for 2AA

Power on to first flash takes about 5 seconds on my rechargable batteries, then it recycles fast. I haven't tried outdoors yet, but they open up a wide range of creative possibilities.

Comments about Morris Midi Slave Di - DC Flash (Black):

Was wary about ordering an inexpensive slave flash that works off my digital camera flash-previously got a slave flash adaptor for an existing flash that didn't fire more than it did. Useless.

This product has a few basic settings, and can be set up as a bounce flash. HAS WORKED EVERY TIME WITH TWO DIFFERENT POCKET DIGITAL CAMERAS. Adds depth to indoor photos. Batteries DO NOT drain quickly.

The Midi Slave Di is compatible with the Panasonic G1, and I assume the GH1 & GF1 as well, when used in pre-flash mode. I would recommend that Morris include a second diffuser with the unit that is a 2 stop ND filter so that the photographer would have three stops of light available rather than the single stop as is the current design.

                      * full power + 2 stop ND= 1/4 power
                      * half power + 2 stop ND= 1/8 power

I am going to get some 2 stop ND gel material and try to fabricate something like this.

This unit is compatible with the Panasonic G1 micro four thirds camera and I assume with the GH1 and GF1 also. I am going to try to find some one and two stop neutral density gels that I can cut to fit the flash tube to give me a four stop flash range.

I bought 2 Midi Slave Di-DC to use as fill in lights. I always carry with me a small Sony Digital Camera DSC-P200 in a sleve pocket on my Commando style sweater. I take a lot of pictures of old Radio Equipment, often in bad light conditions, and was always annoyed with the highlight caused by the in camera flash. Now with the Midi Slave Di-DC on 2 sturdy but inexpencive 3-Section Compact Tripod made by by Impact (only $ 19.95 - #806A) this problem is no more. I get good, even exposed pictures all the time. This is the best buy I have ever done.

You can hide these little flashes behind almost anything and use them to help light up dark areas of interiors. I've used them in kitchens, in corners and other areas that need just that bit of extra light.

Comments about Morris Midi Slave Di - DC Flash (Black):

Comments about Morris Midi Slave Di - DC Flash (Black):

I use this flash to add a highlight or background light when shooting pictures with on-camera flash. I usually set on-camera flash to low setting (e.g., -2 FEC), just enough to trigger this remote flash.

                              Pros:
                              - Works flawlessly with my Canon Rebel XTi (with pre-flash)
                              - Pretty powerful, good enough for my needs
                              - Small, and quite cheap

                              Cons:
                              - Only two power settings: high and low. You may have to do a few test pics to get desired result, by either moving the flash, partically blocking the light, or changing aperture. But if you are using it for highlight (light from the back), you don't have to be too accurate.
