The 10/100 4-Port VPN Router from Linksys combines the functions of a Cable/DSL router, an IPSec VPN gateway, a network switch and network firewall into one compact device. The router allows you to share your Internet connection between several computers that can connect via 4 standard RJ-45 ethernet ports. The router also features a firewall to protect you from malicious software that can attack your computer from the Internet, making it an excellent choice for your home or office network.

Load Balancing Router
The router features 1 dedicated WAN port as well as a port that can be used for DMZ or for adding a 2nd WAN Internet connection. Utilizing 2 simultaneous Internet connections allows the router to perform load balancing, which helps to optimize network traffic.
Integrated Firewall
The router features a powerful firewall to help protect your computer against malicious attacks that often target computers connected to the Internet, giving you peace of mind while you are connected to the web.
IPSec VPN Tunneling
The router works as a Virtual Private Network (VPN) gateway, allowing for up to 50 simultaneous VPN tunnels. IPSec security features many advanced technologies such as DES and 3DES encryption as well as MD5 and SHA authentication to help protect your network. This lets you securely access your home or office network from another location.
DMZ Port
The router features a DMZ port that allows you to connect a computer directly to the Internet, bypassing the integrated firewall. This allows advanced users to connect a computer on their network in order to work with applications that a firewall may interfere.

This is the new version (V3) of the RV042 Router that has supposedly resolved all the problems of the older version. These included overheating and the failures that heat caused (this one runs only slightly warm) and I think it has more memory. You can order this device from B&H and be assured of getting the new V3 version at the excellent B&H price. Cisco has just released a software upgrade that supports IPV6, which prevents this unit from becoming obsolete in the next few years. I believe that it has a limited lifetime warranty from Cisco, and this cannot be beat. If you need dual WAN (I have Cable and DSL) running on the faster cable until the cable goes down and the router switches me over to the slower but astoundingly reliable DSL. You can also use it to load balance between any two Internet links (T1, etc). If you have or want two Internet links, buy this router. [...]

We are using these (Have purchased 6 so far with plans on 30 more) to link communications devices over the internet using gateway to gateway VPN's.
Some great things about this product is its ease of set up, I literally can configure a working VPN tunnel in under a minute. The interface is straight forward and easy to use. The fail over / load sharing is a huge feature that led us to this device.
Some of my cons for this product are lacking documentation for set up examples, inability to have VPN fail over to second internet interface (unless I just have not figured it out, VPN is by internet interface with no option to have it try other interface should tunnel be down). Fail-over would be great if I could reassign a dynamic dns to the active interface, but the inability to do this, and dynamic dns defined per each interface, makes fail-over not an option for a VPN based system. The one other con against this (again unless I am just missing it, its not documented anywhere) is its inability to remotely rport a dropped VPN tunnel through SNMP or any other ipsec interfaced based monitoring system.

Home use, 3 computers and a printer.
It does what it is suppose to, but the overall directions leave something to be desired. Once installed, no complaints.
Not simple to install as I was led to believe. Had to seek help from ISP to see if it was their problem. A little of both. Tech help from Cisco turned into some more expense. Blamed one of my computers. They did solve that issue, but like I said, additional money.

This is my 3rd purchase of this model router. We have 2 small offices that need a simple NAT firewall and gateway routing. Firewall and port forwaring features work great and very easy to manage. Works perfectly and throughput is great. I do not currently use the fail over dual-WAN feature, but it is a nice bonus. We do not use the VPN functionality either so I cannot talk to that. I have the original Linksys-branded model and well as this newer Cisco version. The Linksys has been active for over 3 years without issue so I am very pleased. The new Cisco version has a Cisco SPAM/Virus/Content Filtering Service built-in called ProtectLink that looks interesting and costs about $100 a year. Anyway, I recommend this router for small business with 25 users or less.

A very easy install process. Balances the loads nicely between two different Internet connections. One being a T1 and the other a wireless. Replaced both Netgear and Xincom with these routers and have been much happier.

First of all this is new RV042 v.4 router.I have a home network with appx 8 wired and wireless computers, voip phones, TV with internet video streaming (Netflix, Youtube, Amazon, Hulu,...), gigabit switches, baby monitoring network camera and wireless access point. Before, I had constant speed issues and needed to restart an old router every day. RV042 has fixed all my network problems. The download speed jumped up 3 times. The upload speed stayed the same. No need to restart the unit. Very satisfied. Haven't tried VPN yet.

Always use these for clients who want high speed cable with DSL as failover. Works like a charm and VPN setup is a breeze.

I love this router. For the money, you will not find a router that has as many features (i.e. VPN connectivity, both point to point, and client connection, multiple WAN/Failover), and ease of setup. I use these (or a larger port version) for all of my clients, and NEVER have issues with the firewall. Set and forget.

We replaced an identical unit that failed from water damage. No problems with this one or the older one we had.
