Product Highlights
  • 1250mm f/10 Schmidt-Cassegrain
  • Motorized Altazimuth Mount
  • "GO-TO" Capacity

Featuring Schmidt-Cassegrain optics, the Celestron NexStar 5 SE is an ideal telescope for observing and photographing celestial or terrestrial subjects. With a weight of just 27.6 lb (2.5 kg) including the tripod, the portable 5 SE features a precision optical system with 1250 mm focal length at ƒ10, and has a 56% greater light gathering ability than an equivalent 4" model.

StarBright XLT high transmission coatings
SkyAlign allows alignment on any three bright celestial objects, making for a rapid, efficient alignment process. It then functions as a 'go-to' system accepting commands through the handset and pointing the optical assembly toward any one of nearly 40,000 objects stored in its database. Using the (optional) CN-16 GPS accessory connection and an external GPS (not included), alignment is entirely automatic.
NexRemote telescope control software and RS-232 cable included for advanced control of the telescope with a PC
StarPointer finderscope helps with alignment and locating objects
Flash-upgradeable hand control software and motor control units by way of downloadable updates

This is my second telescope. My first was an 11" SCT. I say was because I sold it and bought the NEXSTAR 5" SE instead. The 11" had great viewing, but I had great difficulty getting the GOTO function to properly align. View was great, but I had to manually track things. Plus it was one heavy son of a gun. I unpacked the NEXSTAR and had to wait 3 days for a clear enough night. Setup was very easy and only took a few minutes as advertised. I used SkyAlign with three stars, selected Jupiter from the avaiable viewing options, and the scope tracked right to it and followed it for a good hour before I went looking for something else. Subsequent alignments have been 99% successful. I did have one bad experience, probably me picking targets to close to each other. I have had the scope out several times and been very happy. Even with a Celestron Solar Imager attached and got my first pictures of a planet other than the moon. As we live in Las Vegas you would think light pollution would be a huge problem, but actually not if you look away from the city. Though in the coming weeks we are going to head out to the desert and get to some dark sky areas.
The 4 star rating, I would give 4.5 if that were an option, is for two reasons. First, during setup and alignment it does not seem to remember the date or time. I would have though with the 8 AA batteries it would at least do that. From what everyone else says, they don't last very long powering the scope for viewing. Secondly, being a smaller lighter scope it can get bounced around a bit if the wind is blowing. One of the trade offs for a more portable model and certainly worth it so far. I am going to experiment suspending a weight from the centre of the tripod and see if that helps. Luckily there are far more nights without wind than with.
Overall I am very happy and my interest in astronomy has been rekindled. I will probably get back to something larger in a few years, but this model has a much better learning curve at a very reasonable price. The PowerTank is a must have. I have the 7 Amp model and have yet to run it down after 9 hours of use.

I received my SE5 less than a month ago. Almost immediately I found that the slewing rate when operating manually was erratic... sometimes going fast, then slowing, then speeding up. It appears to be due to a faulty button operation on the keyboard. I have read about several similar problems on the internet: http://www.astronomyforum.net/skywatcher-telescopes-forum/100791-synscan-az-irrattic-slew-rates.html . "The problem turned out to be a bad mother board in the hand controller."

I don't want to send back the whole telescope from Australia. Can we exchange hand controllers?? I would like to keep using it (with difficulties) in the meantime.

I really like this scope. Set up was very easy. Operation is very straight forward. Images are fantastic and I am just now starting to use a webcam/imaging software for astrophotography. This scope travels well. I fit the entire scope, including the tripod into a Pelican iM2950 Storm Case (get the one w/ foam and cut to fit). Highly recommend this scope as a starter or intermediate.

Comments about Celestron NexStar 5 SE 5"/127mm Catadioptric Telescope Kit:

This is my first telescope, so you be the judge.
On low power (25mm eyepiece) I got a nice picture from Jupiter and its moons. Using a 9mm eyepiece Jupiter was larger, but not sharper. Focusing is a bit of a problem due to 'shaken' of the tripod, evenso I tightened the tripod hand screw as much as I could. Still experimenting with tracking, one planet tracking works, but is of course not very accurate.
NexRemote software will not run on my DEll laptop (Vista OS). Still trying to work the problem with Celestron. Also the RS-232 cable has a female connector, so has my PC.
Overall I give it 4 stars, but consider my limited experience.

I use this for deep space and planetary imaging. If you align it correctly, it has great tracking capabilities, however the longer the exposure, the more chance of slight trailing off you will get.

Comments about Celestron NexStar 5 SE 5"/127mm Catadioptric Telescope Kit:

The 5 SE cost me with postage to Australia less then half the cost it would of cost me to buy it in Australia. I have just begun astro photography and it amazing to be able to see some of our plants reasonably clearly. I have taken some great shots of the moon and some reasonable shots of Saturn and Jupiter.
I am going the purchase the Motofocus unit as it is a bit difficult focusing as the scope shakes when you touch it. I have only been able to use it in the city and there is a lot of light pollution, cant wait to get it away from the lights.
It need some adjusting as the weight of my camera caused the tilt to slip.
It also has a couple of specs of dust on the mirror.

I purchased this scope as a second instrument to my Meade LX90 ACF. Even though the Meade is a Go-To and fairly portable I wanted a simple lightweight scope that I could easily transport and use for the afterschool tutoring programs I volunteer for. The optics are excellent and the Go-To alignment and pointing accuracy are very good. My only complaint is that the red dot finder is cheaply made and difficult to align as the adjustments are not smooth and consistant.

The quality of the merchandise is explicit. Far above and beyond what I expected. The tri-pod is "stout" and most "steady". The scope is very clear "optically" and the "Go To" works perfectly. The instruction are most through. Easy to understand and comply with. With plenty of supporting "Extras" to make operations more exciting, This is an excellent tool, gift, or educational experience. I could not recommend it "Higher".

Not having much experience with telescopes I did a lot of looking around. I took the chance and bought the NexStar 5SE. I'm very happy with this scope. The scope is built far better than others I looked at for more money. I bought this scope to enjoy and it "fits my bill" fine. I must say this though, Celestron packs their products better than any company I've ever done business with. My little scope was in a "train derailment" getting to me and it "survived" without a scratch working great. Beat That!!!
