The Smith-Victor PG15S Mini Slave Flash features a unique swing-away diffuser that provides softer lighting, and reduces light output by 1/2 f/stop. It has a GN of 50', and recycles in 6-8 seconds. It can be positioned vertically, horizontally, or at 45° up or down.

          I have used a cheap slave flash to boost light intensity and coverage for my point & shoot for years now. The mini slave has a bright beam but takes some experimenting to get it to fire consistently. It is better suited as a 3rd flash because it requires a brighter and or more direct source to trigger it than can consistently be achieved from the camera alone. Once you get it to fire it puts out a pleasing quantity of light. It is advertised to compliment a multi flash set up & for that purpose I am quite sure it will excel. I'm happy to have it in bag when I need to spread more light.

          I purchased after a [$] [@] unit died after a year or so.My intention was to supplement my point n shoot providing more light. Unfortunately, when tested w/both of my Lumix TZ7 & Cannon G12 there was not sufficient light to trip the slave. Only when shooting close enough where a fill flash is not needed did the unit trip.It definitely puts out out a blast when it fires. There are no mode adjustments so if your looking for a boost for your pocket camera look elsewhere. I am confident it would work well as a supplement to a multi flash setup.

          This product is easy to carry in backpack and use where space is tight. It can be mounted and bounced off of a card or the umbrella and powerful enough to use as fill light. I set up quickly and start photographing students and usually not given a lot of time so this product is perfect in a fast paced environment.

                I just have a note. You may be having problems getting it to flash at the right time if it is indeed an optical slave. Most DSLRs fire a pre-flash to set up the proper exposure for the second flash. There is a work around for that in higher cost slaves, it is a feature that cases the slave to fire during the camera's second flash. This slave appears not to have this feature. Probably try a different one...

                Takes it's time reloading, but other than that it's really nice for the price. It's built pretty cheaply, the batteries stick inside the battery compartment, so you have to give it a whack to get them out.

                That being said, it does a good job as a hair light, background light, or even a fill light. It's nice because you can set it anywhere, and the way the casing is allows it to be tilted in many directions.

                It's a lot like the built in flash in a digital point-and-shoot camera, but it's more powerful and you can put it anywhere.

                It would be silly to try to compare this to a $400 nikon speedlight.
                Considering the price, it's quite useful. I haven't had any trouble syncing as of yet.

                  I thought this would be a great way to light my subjects during macro photography. Well, the slave flash fired but I couldn't get a good exposure. I can't tell if it's not sync-ing right or if the constant power is throwing off the exposure. The flash always fires at full power. There's no way to adjust it. I tried originally with a Canon 30D and again with my compact digicam. I got the same result both ways.
