I got this one to use as "fill-in" both outside and at home. The GN is 20 so it is powerful enough for most situations. The light spread is also very good.
There are two drawbacks however: First is that it has no settings, so if you need to reduce the light, you need to cover it with ND gels or something. The second is that there is no PC plug as you will find on more expensive brands. That is easy to fix however - but be warned that such modding will void your warranty, and you risk electric shocks if you don't know what you are doing.
It has 1/4"-20 thread so you can put it on tripods or ultrapods.
    Recycling is moderately fast.

WOW super bright. I was going to use these for fill flash but to bright for that. Tried using something over it to sofen the light but then the thing would not trigger. They work as discribed, small, simple to use, I just haven't found the right photo op for them yet, But I have two in my bag.

This little gem is inexpensive and provides perfect output for filling in harsh shadows. Love the idea I can mount on any standard tripod. Recharges faster than my Metz flash so never any doubt if the flash is ready. Sensor will not fire if not in direct line of triggering flash so needs to be kept in line-of-site. Easy to work around.

The sensor triggers well so far with no misfires. Even when not in direct line of sight to trigger flash. Fast recycle time and impressive coverage.

When I shoot food I use two of these Mini's to light my dishes, triggering them with either an on camera fill flash or an IR trigger. They're incredibly portable and work quite well close up for Macro as well. you can't beat the value of these mini slave units. Buy 'em by the handful.

This is for a project for shooting very even lighting on a face, in a portable camera scenario. These are great because we can gang a whole bunch together and have a very small footprint. And they are very inexpensive.

Comments about Smith-Victor PG6S Mini Slave Flash:

The product is small, recycles in 5 seconds with rechargeable batteries. The other review was right in saying it needs direct line of sight for the slave to work. With line of sight, indoors at reasonable distance it works fine. If you put it behind something in it's path (person) it won't work consistently. Like many optical slaves won't work outdoors in bright conditions, but then I guess you probably wouldn't need a slave. Removing the tiny tinted plastic over the photo cell will dramatically improve sensitivity for low light use. I like the 1/4 inch thread which allows me to use it with a small table top tripod. The battery cover is difficult to open but gets easier after several uses.

Puts out allot more light than I had anticipated. It is great for lighting vacuous spaces in architectural shots. it can be a little overpowering at times for its initial intent, so 1/4 sops would be nice. over all, not bad. Hard to get it to fire at times. Best if used with other slaves with one in direct line of site.

It works great for artistic type shots as well as backlight. The only problem I have is that it needs to be in direct line with the trigger flash in order to work. Otherwise, pretty cool little device and a great value as well.

Really handy when needing a cheap and fast way to fill in areas. The recycling time is some what slow, and does not work some of the time unless you have it placed the right way and the right location. What I mean by not working is that it does fire but does not always get in the picture sense it flashes to early. But like I said in the right location it does work like suppose to. Other then that it does give of full power which can be some what of a problem.

because BH had only 7 in stock. I plan on getting 5 more asap. Have used them for about 2 weeks now, so far no issues. They've been on 2 shoots, very easy to carry. But now the recycle time is down to about 10sec, so it's time to replace the AA batts.

Seriously, 12 of these cost about as much as an Orbis adapter or a Canon 430EX-II. These little buggers are way more fun and flexible. Get a few of these and get creative!

I'm giving this product 4 stars because everyone else has been having so much success with these, and I do as well except when I try to sync it with my on-camera flash. they go off (to the naked eye) but do not show up in the exposure. I might need to dive into it further to see if there's a work-around, but be forewarned up front that it may not work with pop-up flashes that are on your DSLR camera.

I use the slaves for background lighting. They work great and are very inexpensive. I wish they made a diffuser to attach to them.

I love the two minis I purchsed! They are perfect for photographing my friends and family in a documentary style. Their small size makes them easy to carry as well as set-up in hidden places before taking pictures. They make it possible to capture those priceless expressions I cannot light with just my on-camera flash. They also help eliminate the shadow the on-camera flash creates.

Comments about Smith-Victor PG6S Mini Slave Flash:

I purchased 3 of these as fill lights and I find they work perfectly, even for the outdoor fill light shots I'm using (to my surprise).

For an inexpensive slave flash unit, battery life seems decent, and as long as you have enough room to move them back, you can control the fill to a decent degree.

What more can you expect from a slave flash that operates as a slave flash every time?
