The Manfrotto 808RC4 3-Way Pan/Tilt Head is the redesigned model in the three-way range of heads. The 808RC4 now also includes the Double Axis Spring System which consists of a built-in 3.3 lb spring for both the front tilt and side tilt movements. It also incorporates dual axis bubble levels to better achieve level shots.
This innovative solution, borrowed from the video industry, helps to move the camera smoothly while framing the picture, as it helps to balance some of the camera weight. In addition, it absorbs the shock to bodies and lenses when reaching the end stop of the head movement.

I use this aluminum 808RC4 to be the base for my Toyo-Field 45AII - a 4x5 camera which weighs in at around six pounds, but when a newer style (bulkier) Symmar or similar lens is added, plus lens shade/compendium, filter, BTZS dark cloth and film holder, the dead weight is closer to ten pounds or more.
I was using a very good 'famous name' ball head (which is great for my MF cameras), but I quickly tired of the lack of control when aligning the camera - the 'floppyness' of a large format camera sitting on a ball, always about to suddenly dip forward alarmingly. I was always wishing for three hands !
The Manfrotto 808RC4 is such a pleasure to use, especially with the super safe RC4 quick release plate. The 3-way head (with dual axis built in levels) can quickly and accurately bring your camera into perfect alignment. The three large rubberized adjustment handles are perfectly placed and excellent to use, and when the camera position is locked, it is locked. Not a millimeter of movement as you tighten the handles, or when you remove your hold of the body. All of this, plus two balance springs in the vertical tilt (forward/backward) and horizontal tilt (left/right) movements (which you can turn on or off) to make the alignment of the camera even easier.
I like products that are well designed and well engineered. I especially like products which I can 'forget' about when I use them. I want to concentrate on my creative work, not my tools. The Manfrotto 808RC4 is such a tool, and I am delighted with it. If you need to support a weighty camera, with ease and with absolute peace of mind, the 808RC4 should be your go-to tripod head.

Now on to the 3 stars - The head can take a serious beating as I use my tripod everyday in the field
- however it does not lock up anymore...at all. I have to use such pressure to loosen and tighten it up every time that I leave with sores on my hands from the rubber handles.
Just so you all know - spend the 300-400 on a nice ballhead and quick release and save yourself a stepping stone

Bought to use with Nikon D300s using an 80-400mm lens and 2x tele extender. Steady as a rock, even in the Rocky Mountain winds. Base plate takes some getting used to for attachment, but not a deal breaker.

Forget ball heads. This is the head you want on your tripod.
Manfrotto's handle system is by far the best, most accurate, and easy to use system I've ever used.
Wouldn't trade this for anything.

Comments about Manfrotto 808RC4 3-Way Pan/Tilt Head with RC4 Quick Release - Supports 17.6 lb (8kg):
I bought this head to go on my new Manfrotto 055XPROB tripod legs. The head is a little heavy, but I guess that's the trade-off for a head that will firmly support a heavier camera and lens. I looked at the simple ball heads that others recommended, but I have always had a tilt/pan head and find them to be very convenient and adaptable to any situation. This head is very intuitive in that you have three levers to control the different motions; tilt back/forward, pan side-to-side, and position the camera vertically. The camera is set in place very firm once the controls are locked. I have loaded on my Nikon D90, a 18-200mm lens and a SB-700 flash and it is not stressed at all. I haven't experienced any problems with the quick release as others have in the past. Overall, I couldn't be happier with this tripod head.

Comments about Manfrotto 808RC4 3-Way Pan/Tilt Head with RC4 Quick Release - Supports 17.6 lb (8kg):
This is new, so rating based on first impressions only. This head sits in between my old 3030 and the 3039/229, but its weight to capacity ratio is an improvement (3 lb. head sipports 17.5 lb. camera). Construction seems solid (typical Manfrotto), movements are smooth, and now sprung. Should work fine for MF, light LF and video. Looking at several pan/tilt heads the 808RC4 hit the sweet spot of weight, capacity and price. For the times I want the seperated movements of a pan/tilt instead of a ball head, this should work. Plus for $42 you can add an RC4 adapter to older heads (inclu. ball heads) to move your camera from one support to another easily.

I use this head for both DSLR stills and video work, mostly in the realm of nature and wildlife documentary projects. It holds a good amount of weight and is sturdy enough to hold my heaviest lens and camera combo. The construction is solid and it is easy to use. Great for panning up and down or side to side. It's a nice hybrid, made for both video and photo. Only downside is that it is not great for panning diagonally, but otherwise a great purchase at a fair price. I actually prefer this pan-head to any ballhead I've ever used. The quick release is a very nice feature.

Outdoors, indoor portaiture. I have taken my first one everywhere from swamps, ocean islands, mountains and deserts for the last 4 years. I have beaten it up dropping it biking on rugged trails, hiking along rocky cliffs banging into things, throwing it into airport luggage, and having it bathed in fresh and salf water. It finally died when I tried to fix the caroded pin that locks open the quick release mechanism. If there is a fault, I can't remove the pin to clean it. It also weighs a lot and I get tired lugging it through brush and mountain trails. It doesn't do anything special, and it is slow to set up, but it just works and it is a survivor! For $, best simple tripod head out there.
