Used it for a portrait of my two children, and plan to do family portraits. The lights do seem dim, but once I placed them where I liked them there was plenty of light. The pictures came out a thousand times better than using just a flash. I'm not a professional, but I am a picky graphic designer. I approve of these lights as a great starter set!
I would have liked some instructions on setup though. There was a bit of a learning curve with that.

The umbrella refection and light quality is also pretty good at such a low price point. The only downside is that this set doesn't come with a bag or case to pack everything up safely, and protect the bulbs.

Comments about Photoflex First Studio Two Light Portrait Kit (120VAC):
I bought the Photoflex First Studio kit hoping it to be a good first lighting kit. This has not been the case. While the materials, stands and construction are much better than cheaper units you can buy, the 250 watt bulbs for each unit are far short of being usable in a typical situation.
I hope to be able to find a way to boost the 250 to 500 watts as this is a minimum if you want enough light to shoot at reasonable f-stops and shutter speeds.
The only way I could get enough light into my Nikon D50 was to heavily boost my ISO or to use a flash which defeated the purpose of the light.
Bought this kit to use at the recent Help-Portrait event and finally boxed it up and used another set-up that someone brought that was 2-500 watt softboxes that were spectacular.
By the time I mod this kit, I could have bought the softbox kit I was originally looking at in the first place.

So far I'm LOVING the lights. I'm still learning different ways to use them. The only thing I wish at this point is that it they had longer cords, but I can work around that easy enough.

Comments about Photoflex First Studio Two Light Portrait Kit (120VAC):
I would recommend this kit for studio or on location lighting. Since they are lightweight, I would recommend sand bags for stability when shooting on location. They provided nice, even lighting. The cords aren't very long, so we used an extension cord.

I love this lighting set! This is a great price and product to start out with. It's fully transportable, easily set up and very sturdy.
It did take some time to figure out the first time. If there was a diagram as to how it should be put together that would have made life easier but once you set it up the first time it's a breeze from there.

used this set once in August, now I have a shoot Saturday, and one of the bulbs blew when I turned on to test lighting. [...] that doesn't help me at all. What am I suppose to do? Ifm this is a common problem with this product, themn I will not be using it any more, and will order nothing else.I will also let others in my profession know about it. Bridgette Blair

No controls- only options are whether to use the umbrellas or not. Light is not diffused over a wide enough area to do full-body shots- only maybe shoulders up.

These lights caused a bit of frustration at first. As I've learned and applied the basic principles, this set has really proved to be well worth the money.

Comments about Photoflex First Studio Two Light Portrait Kit (120VAC):
This is my first investment in studio lighting so really have no basis for comparison. I can tell you that the quality & finish of the product is of fine quality.
For example, I bought the Impact reflector kit which came with a stand and you can tell it is cheaply made whereas the stand with this kit is of a much nicer and sturdier finish.
Portraits have been coming out well. Documentation is brief and helpful.

THE LIGHTS ARE A LITTLE WEAK BUT, OK FOR CLOSE PORTRAIT WORK. tHE SWIVEL BASE FOR THE LIGHTS WAS SO TIGHT ON ONE OF THE LIGHTS I CAN BARELY TILT THE LIGHT EVEN WITH locking handle completely removed
