Rockland Liquid Light is a silver-gelatin liquid emulsion designed to be easily applied to any material.

Liquid light can be used for photographs on wood, glass, ceramics, plastics, chinaware, fabrics, metals, stone, walls, artist's canvas, even an egg! Its even possible to make salon-grade prints on the many handmade papers that are available on the market.

Printing with Liquid Light is the same as with black-and-white enlargement paper. Under an amber or red safelight, brush the emulsion onto the surface to be coated. Wait a few minutes for it to firm up, then expose with an enlarger or slide projector. Process with conventional paper developer and hardening fixer. The print will be archivally-permanent with a full range of tones from warm blacks to clean transparent highlights that reveal the texture and color of the material underneath.
Exclusive Features:

  • Contrast: medium high, approximately #3 grade.
  • Coverage: Approximately 1 1/2 square feet per ounce.
  • No fumes, odors or VOC's: Liquid Light and other Rockland emulsions are made exclusively for darkroom coating and are the only brand of photographic emulsions with no phenol.

Comments about Rockland Liquid Light Photo Emulsion (16 oz):

I do liquid light prints on ceramic and paper. It's a fine product, but one must follow the instructions to a tee, be prepared for a lot of trial and error... and frustration. When the prints come out right, though, they look amazing. Not for the faint of heart. Definitely for the advanced alt processes user, or at least one with patience.

Comments about Rockland Liquid Light Photo Emulsion (16 oz):

I bought this product to use for my photo project. I applied the emulsion to mirrored and black plexi glass to create images. The liquid light attached great to the surface. I never had a problem with the emulsion sliding off the surface. In fact, in some cases where I needed to clean off the emulsion because I didn't like the image, I had a hard time getting it off. That was a good kind of difficulty, though. I did have to expose the image for a ridiculous amount of time, though. Each image on the mirrored plexi had to be exposed for two and a half minutes, and the black plexi had to be exposed for a minute and a half. There was also the problem that I couldn't ever get a very black black in my photos, but it came pretty close. Other than those two things, though, I really liked the product and do plan on using it again.

I have used Liquid Light since the 80's & love this product.
I use it mostly on watercolour paper & its ease of use is especially attractive to me.
It is no different, really, than printing on photo paper.

Comments about Rockland Liquid Light Photo Emulsion (16 oz):

I used this product for a school project. I applied the emulsion to aluminum plates and exposed them with negatives I took out at a nature reserve. It worked as described and I liked the result. I'm going to keep working with this product and experiment on other surfaces. It's not the easiest way to make a photograph but it allows for a more interesting medium. Patience and practice are key.
