Retaining the excellent performance at maximum aperture of the much larger f/2.8L but in a smaller size, the EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens from Canon is a professional zoom telephoto suitable for a broad range of applications from sports to portraiture. It is fully compatible with the Extender EF 1.4x II and 2x II teleconverters (requires f/8 AF sensitivity with EF 2x II) and features optical image stabilization (IS) to reduce the blur caused by camera shake. The image stabilization provides the equivalent effect of a shutter speed 4 stops faster and offers an IS mode optimized for following shots of moving subjects.

Like every autofocus Canon "L" lens, the EF 70-200mm f/4L USM delivers optical performance equal to similar fixed focal length lenses, with silent, high-speed ultrasonic (USM) focusing and full-time manual focus override capacity. A focus range limiting option also enables faster autofocus rates.

Distortions and aberrations are remarkably small for a lens of such capability. This lens combines 1 artificial fluorite element with 2 UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) elements to help achieve images free of secondary spectrum aberrations, which are often the bane of consumer-grade telephoto zooms. It is light enough to not need a tripod collar, but for handling purposes there is an optional tripod collar.

The minimum focusing distance is 3.9' (1.2m) throughout its entire range of focal lengths, and it accepts 67mm screw-in filters. A tight seal structure provides protection from dust and moisture for optimal performance in difficult environments.

An autofocus telephoto zoom lens for both film and digital cameras with constant f/4 maximum aperture performance.
Two-mode optical image stabilization provides up to 4 shutter speed stops of compensation against blur from camera shake. Mode 2 is optimized for panning shots of moving subjects.
An ultrasonic autofocus motor (USM) provides fast, silent autofocus action.
Full-time manual focus override enables precise manual focus at all times, even in AF mode.
Two focus distance ranges enable you to adjust the autofocus to fit your needs and shorten AF speeds. The ranges are 3.9' to infinity for closer subjects and 9.8' to infinity.
Internal zooming and focusing means that the lens' front element does not rotate.
Uses 1 fluorite and 2 UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) elements to help control secondary spectrum aberrations.
Professionally sealed against moisture and dust ingress
Circular aperture diaphragm for natural-looking out of focus highlights
Significantly lighter than the canon 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses.
Uses 67mm filters, is compatible with the optional A-II(W) tripod collar and the 1.4x II and 2.0x II extenders.

If you are looking at this lens you are looking at the perfect alternative to the 70-200mm 2.8 for half the price. Note: if you shoot or plan to shoot a lot and I mean a lot of low light work then stop here and go buy the 2.8 version. Marking this lens down and comparing it to that lens is insane; buy that lens and mark it down. Two different products!
For those of you not making 2.8 money and shoot a wider range of light, not a whole lot of low light work, or you own a flash and know how to control it, you will be very happy with this lens. Believe me when I say I wanted the 2.8 version however; like most semi-pro photographers money is limited and I wanted to eat and have a roof over my head for the next few months while getting the shots I need.
I needed the reach and performance of that 2.8 without the price and this lens is it. This lens is smaller and lighter than the 2.8 which makes it nice to carry around all day especially if you are a location type photographer. It fits in my sling bag mounted to the camera (barely) keeping my load light. The lens performs excellent on my 40D and yes the IS does talk to you however; you begin to use the sound when focusing on the fly. Image quality is amazing, it made me wish I had purchased this lens sooner and I have no regrets not buying the 2.8 version. The colors come out amazing and the CA coating reduces noise seen from cropped sensor cameras . Sports Photographers will not be disappointed, I was able to shoot paraglider's from a cliff the other day and the color and sharpness at 200mm F/4 w/o a UV filter or tripod is amazing. Post processing was minimal in Lr and the prints were ready in no time. In addition, I have used this lens indoors with one 430EXII flash mounted on an umbrella combined with natural light and the shots came out just as good as being outside.
The lens comes with a hood, lens bag/pouch ( I don't like it) and no tripod ring. At first, I thought I needed that ring however; I would say it depends on what you are shooting and the size of your camera. I have the 40D with the battery pack bottom and the camera feels well balanced when this lens is mounted. I imagine if you did not have the battery pack it would feel a bit more front heavy but still manageable. If you own a smaller camera or will be shooting a lot in one day then consider the tripod ring. I was able to mount my camera using the stock camera mount with lens looking straight down and the tripod did not flip over so, I still do not need the ring. This lens is compatible with the Canon EF Extenders 2x and 4x along with the EF25II and EF12II Extension tubes. I have used it with the EF25II Extension tube and the zoom capability and image quality for macro work is amazing. You can shoot bugs at a nice distance without disturbing them and still get that close up detail. The lens comes with a manual explaining the F-stop loss using the Extenders 2x and 4x. Overall, the F-Stop loss is too great for me when starting at F/4 however; that depends on what you are shooting and the availability of light.
I did not buy this lens at B&H, I was able to buy it in new condition from another photographer who barely used it in her work flow and put it in a closet for 8-9 months. That is why I suggest taking a serious assessment of your current work flow before buying any lens. It is a lot of money to just put in a closet for 8-9months. I use this lens constantly know that I have it and I only take it off for wide angle shots. I hope this helps, I wanted to keep it short yet provide you with information that would help you make the best choice when buying this lens.

You can not focus this lens manually if you point it up at more than 45 degrees.
I've tried several of these lenses and have had the same bad results.
Canon WILL NOT take responsibility for it if you don't notice it within your warranty period.
Double check you lense for this issue and return it!!!
Canon does not consider it a manufacturing flaw , even though it obviosly is.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

This is definitely one of my favorite lenses. It's incredibly well built, optically amazing and nice and light.

The thing that really sets it apart for me though, is the IS. It's advertised at 4 stops. And I've successfully captured 200mm shots at as low as 1/10 second shutter. It's loud, but it's incredibly capable.

Given the weight difference (nearly 750 grams, 2x the weight) and the marginal optical difference, this is, to me, the clear winner over the 2.8 IS ii.

The only downside in my experience is that the auto-focus is a little bit on the slow side. Still way faster than commodity lenses, but doesn't have the same snap as other L lenses.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

After a lot of research, I chose this lens over the f/2.8 version. Its weight and size lends itself to carrying on planes, lugging around in a backpack for landscape photography. I have used it for portraits and I am completely satisfied. It is tack sharp and light enough that it doesn't tire me out.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

This lens is great and brings my ability to capture tighter head shots to a whole new level. I highly recommend it. The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five is that it is limited in lens speed to the f4 aperture stop. However, I could not justify paying twice the money to gain one stop in lens speed. So this lens was my choice for economic reasons. Otherwise it is a great lens for the money.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I first owned the non-IS version of this lens and I was very happy with it. But I am not as steady as I used to be, and felt I was loosing some shots due to camera shake. This lens definitely makes a difference.
In short, I love this lens. While a 2.8 would be nice, half the price is nicer, and half the weight is nicer still!
My only complaint, and it's more of an observation than a complaint, is the noise of the IS. I have two other IS lenses. One has an earlier version of IS (EF28-135), and one newer (EF-S 15-85). On both of them the IS is near silent. But I will say that I really only notice the noise indoors in quiet conditions. Outdoors with ambient noise I don't really notice it. And after a short time I've become used to it.

I own the original non-IS version of this lens and it is tack sharp. I upgraded because I shoot mostly video and the IS is a necessity. It works very well and there are 2 modes. A nice bonus is that while my previous version of the lens was not par focal, this copy appears to hold focus through the zoom!

Excuse my English, I am writing from Argentina.
I used the 70-200 4.0 IS on several trips. It is really a pleasure.
                  manual focus is smooth
The very good quality construction, and excellent sealing, I was able to use it in the rain without drawbacks.
It feels balanced in my Canon 5D Mark II and we are as heavy as 2.8.
                  The autofocus is good
The optical quality is superlative in all focal lengths, image quality has a fixed focal length lens and not a zoom.
I've used it for macrofotografia using an extension and the results were more than satisfactory.
The IS is excellent and worth paying more than the version without IS.
The only drawback I found is that when filming a movie should not use the IS is noisy and the sound is recorded on the film, it should not use the IS when a movie is filmed
Will you be my lens for many years

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

                              This lens replaces my Canon
70-300 mm f/4-5.6 IS and is much sharper at longer focal lengths. In fact sharper with 200 mm cropped to equal image size of 300 mm than the old lens. Which is what I wanted.

Functions extremely well with control setting on side easy to use. Seems like IS is better, too.

Mostly portrait of children. The lens focus is very fast and sharpness is outstanding. Need to pratice some with this lense hand held on a crop body to get even sharper image.

This is a must have lens! I have a couple go tos that I carry with me at all time. This is one of them. I also carry the 50mm f1.4 and the 17-40mm f4. With these three lenses, I can cover any situation. This particular lense with IS is very forgiving even without the use of a tripod or monopod. If I have to carry just one lens for everything from fun candids to fast action sports, this would be it.

I had already bought this lense then took a bad fall in a foreign country. The camera and lense smacked against the HARD cement. The camera body was ok, but not my hand. The lense was acting up. I paid to fix it but it still was not right. It was the IS that got damaged. I could still use it but without IS. I finally replaced it and am very happy. I can't have too heavy of a lense and this is light weight enough for me.
