Retaining the excellent performance at maximum aperture of the much larger f/2.8L but in a smaller size, the EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens from Canon is a professional zoom telephoto suitable for a broad range of applications from sports to portraiture. It is fully compatible with the Extender EF 1.4x II and 2x II teleconverters (requires f/8 AF sensitivity with EF 2x II) and features optical image stabilization (IS) to reduce the blur caused by camera shake. The image stabilization provides the equivalent effect of a shutter speed 4 stops faster and offers an IS mode optimized for following shots of moving subjects.

Like every autofocus Canon "L" lens, the EF 70-200mm f/4L USM delivers optical performance equal to similar fixed focal length lenses, with silent, high-speed ultrasonic (USM) focusing and full-time manual focus override capacity. A focus range limiting option also enables faster autofocus rates.

Distortions and aberrations are remarkably small for a lens of such capability. This lens combines 1 artificial fluorite element with 2 UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) elements to help achieve images free of secondary spectrum aberrations, which are often the bane of consumer-grade telephoto zooms. It is light enough to not need a tripod collar, but for handling purposes there is an optional tripod collar.

The minimum focusing distance is 3.9' (1.2m) throughout its entire range of focal lengths, and it accepts 67mm screw-in filters. A tight seal structure provides protection from dust and moisture for optimal performance in difficult environments.

An autofocus telephoto zoom lens for both film and digital cameras with constant f/4 maximum aperture performance.
Two-mode optical image stabilization provides up to 4 shutter speed stops of compensation against blur from camera shake. Mode 2 is optimized for panning shots of moving subjects.
An ultrasonic autofocus motor (USM) provides fast, silent autofocus action.
Full-time manual focus override enables precise manual focus at all times, even in AF mode.
Two focus distance ranges enable you to adjust the autofocus to fit your needs and shorten AF speeds. The ranges are 3.9' to infinity for closer subjects and 9.8' to infinity.
Internal zooming and focusing means that the lens' front element does not rotate.
Uses 1 fluorite and 2 UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) elements to help control secondary spectrum aberrations.
Professionally sealed against moisture and dust ingress
Circular aperture diaphragm for natural-looking out of focus highlights
Significantly lighter than the canon 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses.
Uses 67mm filters, is compatible with the optional A-II(W) tripod collar and the 1.4x II and 2.0x II extenders.

If you are looking at this lens you are looking at the perfect alternative to the 70-200mm 2.8 for half the price. Note: if you shoot or plan to shoot a lot and I mean a lot of low light work then stop here and go buy the 2.8 version. Marking this lens down and comparing it to that lens is insane; buy that lens and mark it down. Two different products!
For those of you not making 2.8 money and shoot a wider range of light, not a whole lot of low light work, or you own a flash and know how to control it, you will be very happy with this lens. Believe me when I say I wanted the 2.8 version however; like most semi-pro photographers money is limited and I wanted to eat and have a roof over my head for the next few months while getting the shots I need.
I needed the reach and performance of that 2.8 without the price and this lens is it. This lens is smaller and lighter than the 2.8 which makes it nice to carry around all day especially if you are a location type photographer. It fits in my sling bag mounted to the camera (barely) keeping my load light. The lens performs excellent on my 40D and yes the IS does talk to you however; you begin to use the sound when focusing on the fly. Image quality is amazing, it made me wish I had purchased this lens sooner and I have no regrets not buying the 2.8 version. The colors come out amazing and the CA coating reduces noise seen from cropped sensor cameras . Sports Photographers will not be disappointed, I was able to shoot paraglider's from a cliff the other day and the color and sharpness at 200mm F/4 w/o a UV filter or tripod is amazing. Post processing was minimal in Lr and the prints were ready in no time. In addition, I have used this lens indoors with one 430EXII flash mounted on an umbrella combined with natural light and the shots came out just as good as being outside.
The lens comes with a hood, lens bag/pouch ( I don't like it) and no tripod ring. At first, I thought I needed that ring however; I would say it depends on what you are shooting and the size of your camera. I have the 40D with the battery pack bottom and the camera feels well balanced when this lens is mounted. I imagine if you did not have the battery pack it would feel a bit more front heavy but still manageable. If you own a smaller camera or will be shooting a lot in one day then consider the tripod ring. I was able to mount my camera using the stock camera mount with lens looking straight down and the tripod did not flip over so, I still do not need the ring. This lens is compatible with the Canon EF Extenders 2x and 4x along with the EF25II and EF12II Extension tubes. I have used it with the EF25II Extension tube and the zoom capability and image quality for macro work is amazing. You can shoot bugs at a nice distance without disturbing them and still get that close up detail. The lens comes with a manual explaining the F-stop loss using the Extenders 2x and 4x. Overall, the F-Stop loss is too great for me when starting at F/4 however; that depends on what you are shooting and the availability of light.
I did not buy this lens at B&H, I was able to buy it in new condition from another photographer who barely used it in her work flow and put it in a closet for 8-9 months. That is why I suggest taking a serious assessment of your current work flow before buying any lens. It is a lot of money to just put in a closet for 8-9months. I use this lens constantly know that I have it and I only take it off for wide angle shots. I hope this helps, I wanted to keep it short yet provide you with information that would help you make the best choice when buying this lens.

There is a major manufacturing defect with this lense
You can not focus this lens manually if you point it up at more than 45 degrees.
I've tried several of these lenses and have had the same bad results.
Canon WILL NOT take responsibility for it if you don't notice it within your warranty period.
Double check you lense for this issue and return it!!!
Canon does not consider it a manufacturing flaw , even though it obviosly is.

    Love this lens

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

Really went back and forth between this lens and its big brother, the f2.8. This lens is significantly lighter, and I mainly use it to shoot wildlife--mainly birds-- so the setting I most often use is f4 or higher anyway. Therefore, this was my choice, and I'm very pleased. The Sharp and fast focus is wonderful. The lens produces great bokeh and compressed images. I love it! It is on my 7dmk2 almost all the time.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

This is one of those great lenses not too many people talk about. I primarily use it for video, but I am using it more and more to shoot stills. The lens is light, about half the weight of its 2.8 counterpart. But as far as sharpness and quality its wonderful! And at $ to $ dollars less I consider it a great deal. It has become my go to lens for shooting interviews. Whatever you may have heard about this lens unless it good, its a lie. If you want a more expensive lens, by all means go ahead and buy one. But this lens does the job nicely, and at a very decient price.

Received yesterday. Tried it immediately. Super fast focusing! Crystal clear! Far lighter in weight than I thought it would be. Much easier to handle too.
Worth every penny! Can't wait to buy my next L lens. B&H gave excellent guidance to help me select this lens. I will certainly use them again.
Can't wait to take this on our European vacation next week. I bought an extra case that has good padding and a shoulder strap so I don't have to carry a large camera bag. That too came from B&H.
Save your money and buy this lens. You'll have no regrets and excellent photos.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

Wanted this lens for years. Didn't want to part with the money. Finally puled the trigger couple of months ago along with a B&W haze filter for it. This lens is fantastic! Very sharp all around. The IS works extremely well - within reason. As you have it zoomed all the way to 200, you push the shutter button down 1/2 way, and can see that everything "calms down" as the stabilization kicks in. It's like I have 2 new cameras now. Lens works great on my crop 7D for sports and that "extra reach" and gets buttery smooth bokeh with my 6D. With the 6D and it's fine high iso capabilities, you do not need a 2.8 unless you make your living as a pro photographer. If you buy it, you will enjoy it for many years. Then sell it or, hand it down....... .Oh and, thanks to B&H as usual for a flawless and no charge shipping experience - next day delivery so I could take to the game.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I've been shooting with the Canon 24-105mm f/4L for the past 1.5 years on my Canon C100. Overall it's done quite a good job and the footage has looked very nice. However, I needed a lens for wedding ceremonies with a much longer reach so I purchased the Canon 70-200mm f/4L and I've been utterly amazed at the quality of this lens. While the 24-105mm does many things very well, I noticed that when shooting at f/4, the subjects in the image did not look as crisp as my Canon 50mm f/1.4 when it's set to f/4.

After my first shoot with the 70-200mm f/4, I found that even when shooting wide open, the subjects look as sharp and crisp as I could ask for. Also, the contrast and color rendition has a much nicer look than the 24-105 as it just looks more natural and pleasing to the eye. Both are great lenses, but I'm just blown away by how nice the image of the 70-200 is. I decided to purchase a 2nd one for my other C100 as I plan to use it for many years to come.

I purchased this lens to photograph my granddaughter playing softball. I have dabbled in photography most of my adult life. I have taken a few courses and this Canon DSLR is my second digital camera. I own several lenses and I was hesitant to purchase a lens that was this expensive because I am retired. All I can say is WOW. I am happy i made the purchase. My first shot was my granddaughter sliding into 3rd base. I was amazed at the clarity without a tripod. The stop action was superb. The dust cloud perfectly suspended around the base. I was ecstatic!!! The auto focus performed fast and accurately. I really don't have anything bad to say about this lens. I read other reviews before I purchased this lens and I was worried about the weight. I found out right away that it was a non-issue for me. I wisch this lens came in a hard lens case rather than a pouch.

I purchased this lens primarily for landscape photography and it is turning out to be my favorite lens beyond the 24-105mm - very versatile, sharp and quick focusing. It's not too heavy and easy to use.

This was my first L quality lense and I was very impressed with the results on my first shoot. The lense worked well on my 70D and produced great results. While the lense was expensive, I now understand why.

Comments about Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I also own the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM lens. However, the above lens though excellent is too heavy. After reading the positive reviews on "EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens by Canon", I decided to buy this one as well. I primarily shoot landscapes, so the difference in f stop from 2.8 to 4.0 is not significant for me, since I never shoot below f/8 or f/11. I found this lens to be very light, extremely sharp even at the corners and having a great picture quality. Overall very happy at making the switch to the lighter, sharper and price wise less expensive (as opposed to the 2.8 Mark 2) lens.
