The EF 50mm f/1.2L USM Lens from Canon is a fast prime lens featuring a particularly large maximum aperture for effective low-light and shallow depth of field capability. As a standard focal length lens, it is suitable for most any shooting situation and its lens coating and optical construction are optimized to minimize chromatic aberrations, ghosting and flare. A truly circular diaphragm results in pleasing out-of-focus areas.

An ultrasonic autofocus motor (USM) provides fast, smooth and quiet autofocus action and manual focus override allows for precise manual focusing even in AF mode. With a tight seal structure and the addition of the optional Canon protect filter, the 50mm f/1.2L lens is moisture and dust proof.

Large f/1.2 Aperture
A large maximum aperture of f/1.2 provides outstanding speed for shooting in low light conditions, without the need for flash. The large aperture also provides fine control over depth of field.
Excellent Background Bokeh
A circular aperture helps to create attractive background bokeh; ideal for isolating subjects at large apertures and for compelling portrait photography.
Fast, Quiet Autofocus
A Ring-type USM (Ultrasonic motor) uses ultrasonic frequency vibrations to drive extremely rapid auto focus with near-silent operation. A high-speed CPU and improved AF algorithm contribute further to AF speed. Good holding torque stops the focusing lens group without overshoot. Full time electronic manual focus override is available without having to switch out of AF.
Super Spectra Coatings
Super Spectra lens coatings and lens element shaping suppress flare and ghosting - more prone to occur with digital cameras due to reflection off the image sensor. Coatings also help achieve true color balance and increase contrast for vivid hi-fidelity images.
Passes Distance Information to E-TTL II
The lens passes distance information back to the E-TTL II flash system of compatible EOS cameras to ensure optimal flash metering.

This really is an interesting lens. I've gone from hating it to loving it over a few short days. It's hugely idiosyncratic, and in that sense, much of the criticism that it has received on web forums, blogs and reviews is largely correct. However, when you get to know the lens, it really is very capable and offers a unique perspective on the world.

It's heavy and does not have IS, and therefore, you will get some blur if you don't use flash below around 1/30 sec. Also, there is definitely a flaw in the focus algorithms, but only when shooting faces and focusing on eyes. Under controlled conditions, shooting a mm scaled ruler, it hits focus accurately 100% of the time. Shooting portraits, I hit around 65 to 70% success. This is quite acceptable given the incredibly narrow depth of field at f1.2. It definitely does back focus on some occasions, but not often enough to be a problem, and given the narrow slither of focus available wide open, it probably wouldn't show up any missfocus at anything much above f2.8 where the zone of focus is a bit wider.

How sharp is it - razor sharp from f1.2 up. Sharpness improves up to f1.6, and then reaches a peak at around f2.2. However, I shoot at f1.2 whenever I can as results are simply brilliant. So, this is a bit of a love me hate me lens. It is definitely not worth the money, and unless you are wealthy or a true bona fide professional earning your money through social photography (not so many of them left now), I'd think twice before parting with your money. However, if you are in this category, or a keen amateur portrait photographer, you won't regret buying this lens - just be prepared to accept it does have some foibles. It is limited to 50 or 80mm equivalence on FF or APS-C cameras, and you might miss your zoom, but when you nail a shot with this lens, nothing can compare to it. The 80mm f1.2 is too large and heavy and the electric focusing all conspire to put the 50mm ahead (cheaper too). I like this lens on a crop frame camera best as the 80mm perspective is particularly flattering. I remember when in film days of the 1980s we were all told to throw our 'useless' 50mm lenses away and buy zooms - how things change!

I was tainted by all the bad press about this lens, but I'm glad I got it. The reviews I read made me paranoid, and I was pixel peeping every image for sharpness - I guess you all will too after spending this much money. I read one review that said the lens caused strange yellow banding patterning on most frames some of the time. Imagine my thoughts when this happened to me on the second day I had it - I was ready to throw the lens in the bin (well return it). But ha - I learnt that at fast shutter speeds (due to large aperture), older style fluorescent lighting causes this patterning. Motto - don't believe half the rubbish you read on blogs! My advice is to buy this lens, it'll give you great pleasure and inject a new perspective to your photography. My view is that this is a sharp, brilliant lens, but a truly idiosyncratic one - a bit like many creative geniuses. But don't buy on a whim or a must have premise, buy if you are in need of the narrow depth of field and unique images that this trait confers Enjoy, and I hope this review dispels some of the misinformation and confusion that exists out there, and particularly with prospective buyers.

    A Necessary evil

I shoot a wide variety of subject matter for my work and, because I exclusively use full frame Canon bodies and always try to use prime lenses, a 50mm is almost mandatory.

I have owned the EF 50mm f1.4 for years and it is a really good lens. Unfortunately, it is not a truely great one as it flares, focuses erratically and suffers from chromatic aberration, amongst other things.

I assumed the 50mm f1.2L would have to be much better because it is much heavier, many times the price and only a third of a stop faster. I was wrong. For examle, compared to my Mk. I 85mm f1.2, (which it is in the same "family" as) it is very poor. The later 50mm f1.2 should have built on this 20 year old design but it went backwards.

In some ways it is better than the EF 50mm f1.4. It has less flare and it is sharper to about f4 but it still has chromatic aberration, it is only acceptably sharp in the centre and it really suffers with back focussing and erratic focussing problems. I have paid Canon several times to try and get this lens to focus reliably, ( and had it done under warranty too). I have now given up and and accepted the best compromise after many hours of micro-adjustment with my camera bodies. I just shoot a lot of frames wherever possible. If I can get away with it I manually focus with live view or, even better, use my old Zeiss f1.4 plannar. In all I have 9 L series lenses and this has been the only truly troublesome one. My colleges are having similar problems with them. I would be o.k. about it if this didn't cost almost as much as the last car I could afford.

Australian photographers are rarely rich but, like other professionals, we get in trouble if we don't produce sharp photos. If you need the best compromise to do your job and they pay you well enough, this might be it but, otherwise, get the 50mm f1.4. It is a fraction of the price and, in in many ways it is the better lens. Now, why did I sell mine? . . . Better get another one.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM Lens:

I'm not sure if a full ★★★★★ (5-star) rating is warranted as I almost feel like that equates to perfection. This lens is not completely perfect, but I truly love the images that it produces so I'm going to go with it.

I'm a photo editor and photographer on Maui. I've had the cheap $100 "nifty 50" from Canon for a long time. And for the price it's a fine little lens. Plastic and noisy, but you get what you pay for. With a little patience you can come home with some nice images. But after seeing what the L version was capable of, I knew it was only a matter of time before I added this lens to my gear bag. (Actually, it doesn't go in the bag—it stays mounted on my camera almost 24/7.) I am very happy with this purchase! I decided to skip the 50mm 1.4. Sure, it's cheaper, but there is no lack of reviews online talking about how bad it *could* be. Yes, the 1.2 is much more costly, but hey—buy once, cry once, right? I think the extra expenditure was worth it.

This 50mm 1.2L lens has a wonderful bokeh. It makes photos look very cinematic I think. I don't usually run it all the way at 1.2 because the depth of field becomes such a sliver, that a lot of would-be allstars become misses because the focus was not precisely where it needed to be. But even around the f2.0 range the bokeh looks terrific. I shoot weddings, events and portraits with at least two bodies going at all times and this lens (mounted on a 6D) is a standard part of my arsenal.

Yes, it's heavy. But all good glass is, so I don't mind it. The only other downside that I've encountered with this lens is the focus. Sometimes it will hunt a bit before locking on. It's not that bad, but it is noticeable. Typically it's completely fine, but every once and again, it will hunt. For portraits it's not a deal-breaker, but for key moments, that you can't recreate, it can be frustrating. And this has been noted elsewhere in other reviews.

Overall, I love this lens. Primes are definitely the way to go. I'm completely satisfied with this purchase. Only wish I had the $ to do it earlier. Looking forward to making some beautiful images with it for a long time to come. Highly recommended!

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM Lens:

Its not the sharpest L lens that we own (compared to 85L, 70-200L and the sigma 35 art), but il renders beautifully. OOF areas simply melt away making the subject really stand out. The softness of 1.2 (and yes it is softer than the 35L and 85L) actually works really well on portraits. Not everyone wants all the details of their face in crisp detail on pictures. If you purchase this lens don't compare it to the sigma 50 art or go off off of test charts. Looking at the pictures as a whole you will be very happy. The creative potential is more than extreme, especially in lower light. Having a 1.2 aperture comes in handy more than you would think. We use it extensively on weddings, engagements and portrait sessions. I just docked a star because it is definitely softer at 1.2 than i had hoped, and I have seen focus shift slightly at f/2/2 range (some shots in focus, others no) Again overall despite all of its quirks it is probably my favorite lens. Try it and see for yourself how nice colors render and the nice contrast in your pics and especially that bokeh. You will not be disappointed.

Not a lens for the masses. Its an interesting piece of glass with a unmatched buttery smooth bokeh and a distinguishing color integrity. I can just differentiate pictures taken with this lens. due to its high aperture its a bit difficult to focus right but with practice it can be mastered. AF is not the fastest but suffices for portraits and landscapes. My favorite lens for some dreamy shots.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM Lens:

This lens is not worth the inflated price. The 50mm 1.8 does nearly as good for just over $. I suppose the materials & workmanship are a lot more costly, but it is certainly not 16 times better than the 1.8. It is also very heavy for a small lens.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM Lens:

I've had the opportunity to rent this lens in the past and also to use a friend's, and I finally made the leap and purchased my own. It's extremely sharp (on a par with my Canon 100mm f/2.8 L IS), offering beautiful color and creamy bokeh. It's obviously a great choice for low-light photography. I use it on my 5D Mk II for a wide range of shooting; it makes a good portrait lens on my 7D. I also own the 24-70mm f/2.8 L II but will probably use the 50mm at least half the time as I prefer prime lenses.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM Lens:

I bought this lens for taking portrait of people and animals. However, when I tried to use it for astrophotography, I love the effect because it put my ISO into low shall we say 1600 and it is bright already,I didn't have lots of noise in my photo. The bokeh of this lens is really phenomenal. One time I took photo using the greatest aperture as possible and it really gave me the effect I really wanted in my photo. Others were telling that they don't like the soft effect of this lens but I really don't care because if you just buy this lens and use the small aperture so it defeats the purpose. I already have 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM so if I want to use smaller aperture I don't need to buy this lens i just use my 24-70mm f/2.8 IS USM instead.

Comments about Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM Lens:

I had the Canon 50mm 1.4 Lens and the focusing mechanism broke on it after only having it for 3 years. Because of this, I debated a long time about upgrading to the EF 50mm f1.2L USM Lens. I must say that I am impressed. It is heavier, which I like for my Mark ii 5D. The color rendering is superb and the bokeh is beautiful. It feels more solid and will hopefully give me many years to a lifetime of use. I have used it for several photo shoots, includig a dental lab, and its ability to work indoors is amazing. The only reason why I gave it 4 stars was because of its slow focusing issues while on auto focus. I find I have much better success setting my focus point. While it takes a few seconds longer, the accuracy is worth it. I have found that compared to the 1.4, the eyes are tack sharp (when focused on) at low apertures which is a huge upgrade from the 1.4 and makes stunning portraits, especially for women. Great lens to have in your bag!
