Yukon Advanced Optics, a world wide leader in the development and distribution of night vision and sporting optics, stay true to their one simple mission; to produce high quality optics at affordable prices. Their items are lightweight, compact, and quite durable. Extreme care is taken in the construction and design of each optic, and special attention is paid to the art and physics of optical science. This level of quality control ensures that each device is a joy to hold, use, and look through.

Observing nature and wildlife at night with the Digital Ranger 5x42 Night Vision Monocular is truly an amazing experience. Now, all the secrets of the night are revealed as a whole new world of previously unseen activity lies before you. Yukon has passed over the ubiquitous intensifier tubes for this NVD, for a newer digital technology that compares favorably with 2nd generation intensifier systems. By utilizing one or both of the integral IR illuminators, your field of view or range of vision can be increased as needed. High quality multi coated optics ensures a clear and crisp view while the rugged rubber armored housing offers a secure grip and protects against accidents. There's even a video out port so you can record and document scenes and situations without the need for auxiliary lighting.

Comments about Yukon Advanced Optics Digital Ranger 5x42 Night Vision Monocular:

Worked right out of the box... I had the AA batteries ready to drop in. Has lots of included accessories and options! You just need to buy batteries. You can also plug it into the lighter/cargo plug in the car or use an a/c outlet in the house, as well. No need to worry about messing up the optics by exposing it to light.. since it uses a ccd. No need for special batteries, just 6 double AAs. Also, an extra battery holder that you can pre-load just in case you need to put fresh batteries in quickly in the dark.

The monocular fits snugly in its padded shoulder bag. You can clip a small bag to the case if you need to carry the extra accessories with you. You can even hook it up to a TV or recorder with the included RCA connector cord. It worked beautifully in a pitch dark garage on the high setting. Viewable area is limited to the width of the beam in a pitch dark environment. Looking thru a window was no problem as long as you are right up close to the window pane..otherwise, you do get a flare from the invisible IR beam.

Since it is not damaged by day light, like standard night vision, you can get comfortable using it during the day when it is easier to learn the position of the control buttons. If you are used to manual binoculars...this, is a piece of cake to learn. Just install batteries..,remove the lens covers and turn it on,...in dim light leave it set on low ..,in pitch black, distance, or darkly shadowed areas you must set to high beam (has + and _ buttons to adjust the IR beam)...,adjust the eye piece and the lens to focus on something at a minimum of 10 feet away ...,and you are ready to go. Just set the monoculars internal lighting to your comfort level (with the sensitivity wheel) and refocus the lens as needed. All the buttons and wheel are easy to reach on the top of the unit.

Remember, it only works when the power is turned on. Be sure you have removed the lens covers before viewing...,they are easy to forget. .., and if you are putting the monocular away with the batteries installed..., slide it into its case by holding it by the attached neckstrap. It is very easy to accidentally touch the "on" button when you are doing it by hand. If in doubt, just look at the eyepiece as you are zipping the bag closed. If you see a light..., you didn't do it right! I haven't had any problems, since I started using the strap.

I am sure if you have the money to spend.., you can get a model with auto focus and all the bells and whistles. This one is a comfortable weight for hand held , it is not designed for hands free head gear. This night vision unit is perfect for me and at a good price.

Comments about Yukon Advanced Optics Digital Ranger 5x42 Night Vision Monocular:

I've been using the monocular to view animals and whatnot during the more limited hours of light. As well I've used it quite a bit for looking at the stars and other normally unseeable objects in the night sky. All I can say is this device is exceptional. It will do everything adverstised and move. Highly recommend this item if you are planning on any nocturnal viewing type activities.

Comments about Yukon Advanced Optics Digital Ranger 5x42 Night Vision Monocular:

We purchased this monocular hoping to see some of the nocturnal wildlife around our home. After purchasing, then returning a Gen 1 monocular, we did a lot of research and were happy to find this digital model at a good price. Overall we are very satisfied with the image quality. We tried it on a tripod connected to our television and were really surprised at how good the image is. The only downside is that you really cannot use it at night through a window, as others have stated, because of the IR reflecting off the glass.

Comments about Yukon Advanced Optics Digital Ranger 5x42 Night Vision Monocular:

Field of view so narrow that it's not really useful for night wildlife viewing of anything that is mobile or for searching (I was trying to use it for night birds). The focus changes too much with depth. I do think that it is very cool; for perimeter security or following large animals who do not move much, it would probably be great.

A few notes: it blinds you it is so bright, even with the brightness turned down. Because both pupils constrict when one is exposed, you will lose any semblance of night vision. This means you cannot use it, move and rescan. The field of view is much to narrow to safely walk with it. So it's useful from a fixed position only.

In wildnerness/forests with no moon or man-made light, it is only useful as far as the infrared beam shines. The light amplification is great in urban settings however without the infrared beam.

The device is impressive, but it takes some getting used to. Give it time to adjust both focus elements, the contrast and brightness.

B&H had the best pricing around and having had previous experience with them on a Digital camera purchase had absolutely no qualms about buying online. My husband was thrilled with his present!

Comments about Yukon Advanced Optics Digital Ranger 5x42 Night Vision Monocular:

I was looking for an inexpensive NV device but without the delicacy of the old fashioned tube types, and I found it. I believe the technology is based on the Sony night vision found on camcorders, but the camcorders are very limited in range in comparison. The 820 foot spec. is underspecified. I was able to spot an observation target in complete darkness (without a moon) over 300 yards away without the use of the booster IR beam. When I did turn on the booster beam, it lit up too bright, and I had to turn down the IR intensity adjustment wheel. The IR intensity adjustment wheel is nice to tune down/up the IR to the optimum viewing intensity. I was also happy to learn that I could use the IR through a close window (car) with perfect clarity and no IR glare once focus and IR intensity adjustments are set. There is no green tint as with other NV devices, it is all in shades of gray. The viewing area is square through the lens and remains operational when the external video output jack is used. There is no clipping when comparing RCA video output to actual viewed area through the lens. The 5x magnification is great for distance viewing, but not ideal for close in work -no less than 16 feet. The angle of view (5 Degrees) is sufficient for the viewing distance. The 12V adapter has a nice long chord with a secure connector plug. Mine came with 2 battery cartridges, (one spare) each holding the required Six AA batteries. The buttons do not make a sound when operated.Per the manual, there is a 5 hr waiting period for condensation when taking it from extremes of temperature, but I have taken mine out in the car with the window down in 20 degree weather and then taken it out inside at home without any problems. This device exceeded my expectations by orders of magnitude.

Problems Encountered: The included carrying case is not very well padded. I substituted an old side slung camera bag which has worked well both for protecting the NVM as well as keeping the accessories with it. (standard case is not sized to carry either power adapters or batteries)Rechargeable batteries other than the older Nickel-Cadmium type are not recommended. The AC adapter fits well, but the chord could be longer. The buttons do not give you a feeling like you have pressed anything. No built in still/video recording device to some kind of digital media. (external is an option though)

Items I Recommend: Different Carry Case - old camera shoulder bag?
