Extremely compact and light-weight, the Leica 28mm f/2.8 Elmarit-M Aspherical Lens is currently the most compact lens in the line-up of Leica M-system lenses. This lens is practically distortion-free in the whole focus range from 2.3" (0.7 m) to infinity and only extends slightly into the viewfinder field of M cameras.
This lens has been updated with the "6-bit" coding, which allows the digital M camera to read this information optically and to identify which lens is being used. The camera can then (optionally) apply a "final stage" software based vignetting correction (for RAW images the lens used is simply recorded, no change is made).

I recently gave in to every photographers deep seeded childhood need...and bought a Leica Camera...an M8. I chose the 28mm f/2.8 as my first corresponding lens. I have used many different camera types from my Canon 1ds mkII, Hasselblad 503, Arca Swiss 4x5, Nikon FM and D70, 4x5 pinholes, to my Voightlander R3 with a new Zeiss 50mm f/2.8 lens. Now I finally have a Leica outfit. I originally bought this camera to take on commercial fishingboats in New England, but I have found that this new setup works very well as a second non-super wide real estate photography kit. It has also reawakened my love for street photography. This lens is so compact that taking my Leica everywhere I go is not a chore but an absolute pleasure. I take it to breakfast even...in case I see anything I want to get a shot of.
I spend alot of time staring at Images made with incredible digital equipment, and I find that each camera and lens combination produces something very different. I have a hard time seeing a difference in sharpness between what this lens on my M8 can produce versus my 1ds mkII with an L series lens. But when I show my friends my images...they immediately gravitate towrds the images made with the Leica lens and body. They say it has a 3D feel. I don't have another 28mm f/2.8 lens to compare this to...but I can honestly say that this lens has that exclusively Leica feel to it...where the edges have that classic Leica sharpness which is unmistakeable. The only other lens I have that gives this sensation is my Nikon M 200mm f/8 lens mounted on my Arca 4x5.
I like this lens shot at 5.6. For close up shots 2.8 is very crisp. This lens' image circle is cropped to approxiamately the same view as a 35mm lens on a film body. So for M8 owners this is a must have lens...and thank goodness its also "cheap".

Wanting a lens for my M8 that would be equivalent to a 35mm I choose this lens for its small size and legendary Leica quality.
Unfortunately I was not overwhelmed when I opened the Raw files on my computer. All of them needed a significant bump in contrast and some saturation in order to make the images look the way I like it. While when I was using a rented Zeiss lens I was in awe with almost every image straight out of the camera without much need for adjustments.
The look of an image projected by the lens is up to the photographers personal taste. Sorry to say but its not mine.

Comments about Leica 28mm f/2.8 Elmarit M Aspherical Manual Focus Lens (6-Bit):
This lens has blown me away, with excellent quality in everything.
It´s a MUST if you have an M8 or M8.2, because of the crop factor.
I did a lot of research about this ASPH version, and everybody agreed that this is the finest Elmarit version.
It is all Leica, super well built and mega sexy.
I love this lens and with my M8.2 has become "The One" for streetphotography.
The things that i love are:
A) How good it feels, soft and precise, very intuitive.
B) Super crisp pictures, and it renders a lot of nice color.
C) The hood has blown my mind, extremely well built. I hate hoods, and i love this one, it is always on the lens.
D) The pouch is very exquisite as well as the metal cap (front).
E) Fast, reliable, a must have if you are a streetphotographer.
F) It is very light, lets you concentrate in the picture.
I can´t say anything bad about this lens.
I´m totally in love with this little guy.
110% recommended.

I am an enthusiast - shoot B&W with my M6 almost exclusively.
I have tried Voitlander 28 and Zeiss 28 as well, Zeiss is great IMO, just a little bigger and heavier. This is a great feature of the Elmarit for me when I do street photography.
It's "sharp" edge to edge after F4 as you're aware of. It's true.
I find the hood to almost be a necessity on my M6?

28mm f/2.8 Elmarit-M is small in size, light in your pocket, and less damage on your wallet. It offers supreme sharpness edge to edge at f/4, very sharp wide open. Color rendering is great, and flare control is very nice against the sun.

Comments about Leica 28mm f/2.8 Elmarit M Aspherical Manual Focus Lens (6-Bit):
Actually superior to all other Leica M lenses in this focal length. I have rigorously tested them all and this is the one. Simpler, smaller, uniformly sharper, less ca in the corners.
All the 28s are great lenses, this just happens to have a bit of an edge. I can see no real need for the slightly increased speed coupled with the size and weight penalty of the others.

i didn't wanted to go any wider because i didn't want to use external viewfinder on MP,M6 0.85,M7. for the money, can't get any better. the most compact lens in the current leica line. and with leica size is important. the hood works great. come with two front caps a metal one to use without the hood and a rectangular rubber to go with the hood. al this can be put on with a 39mm filter on it. perfect wide angle lens for me, won't notice any distortion and will feel very natural when using. i thought it would be an ocassional lens to use. now it's almost as much on my camera as the 50 summicron. great fun to shoot indoors. the mechanical quality is exceptional as the engravings and the general feeling of the lens. both caps and hood with rear cap and filter threaded on fit nicely in a luxurious leather case that protects it when traveling. although when our shooting i usually keep it in my pocket. it just feels that strong and robust.

A really sharp lens in such a small size has always been on my wish list for the M6 and M8. Really well built all around. 6-bit coding basically doesn't do much except displaying what lens was used in the EXIF. Focusing ring is smooth throughout. Comments about Leica 28mm f/2.8 Elmarit M Aspherical Manual Focus Lens (6-Bit):
I am a professional portrait / wedding photographer using Nikon's FX cameras with lots of nice glass, SB900s etc. It does the job well but I often feel a little "removed" from my passion, photography.
After reading about the Leica M8 I finally went for it three weeks ago with the 28mm Elmarit as my first lens. This was my only photographic equipment for a week long vacation to the UP of Michigan and it was all I needed - or wanted! I felt a new level of creativity, involvement and control.
The lens is small and light yet feels very well made and markings are very easy to read for pre-focusing. Looking at my 30" monitor the sharpness of the images is unbelievable. Nice big focus tab making focusing easy.
I see wonderful opportunities in adding Leica gear to the Nikons for wedding images that will separate me from my look alike competition. Maybe even a new candid / PJ look for my HS senior work. When I retire in a couple years the cumbersome SLR gear will all go, and my light and fast Leica system will grow.
