The SAL-20TC AF 2x (D) Teleconverter- for Select Sony & Maxxum AF SSM & APO Lenses from Sony will increase the focal length of a lens by 2x, and reduces the lens aperture by approximately 2 f-stops. It was specifically designed to provide full AF compatibility with a select range of Sony (or equivalent Minolta) pro-level G-series lenses (with Minolta, only with Maxxum 7/5/4/3 or newer cameras). For example, using a 2x teleconverter with a 300mm lens will effectively increase the focal length to 600mm. A lens set to f/2.8 will now be f/5.6.
Note: Due to the high-quality design of this converter (6 elements/5 groups), the teleconverter will only fit and work with a select range of lenses, and only the following Sony lenses are compatible:
Only the following Minolta lenses are compatible:

This review is very short and to the point. even though this converter is pricey, it's still cheaper then buying a new lens to carry around. Now the only real con is you loose auto focus on most lens. I have it for my a77 sony 70-400mm lens. I have found that i prefer to use manual forces when i shooting at the end of my focal length. After talking pics of the Full Moon at 800mm there is no way i can say anything bad about this converter. everyone needs to practice auto focus there will be several times when its the only why to get the perfect pic no matter what setup you have. so do yourself and get this converter. it will not affect you image quality.

I use this with my Sony 300mm f/2.8 lens. If I had written this review a year ago I would have not given a favorable review. Teleconverters are hard to use and get good results. I have learned to take my time and trust my histograms and make needed exposure adjustments. Then it works well.

Takes as good a photo as the lens that it is attached to, keeping in mind that the light is reduced by 2 f-stops. Easy to attach and remove-very simple equipment. Good quality. Lightweight. A little pricey.

I have been using the converted for wildlife shoots especially birds. It adds little extra weight and is well balance and extremely sharp images. At times it does have a tendency to hunt. It is best to shot with a tripod or bean bag.

Finally getting serious about my wildlife photography. Coupled the 2X with a Sony 70-400mm and, oh my, how the subject fills the screen! Haven't found anything to complain about yet. No significant loss of quality. Nice little bonus - it comes with it's own bag.

I purchased this for use with Sony A850 DSLR camera and Sony 4-5.6 70/400 zoom lense. It is primarily used for birdwatching. The only problem is the loss of autofocus with the particular lense I am using.
It seems to work very well and I am mostly using to photograph water birds at the moment.

Strong built, durable; does not affect the quality of the pictures, fits very well the 70-200 G Lens. Does not fit my Sigma 170-500 zoom.

If you own the Sony 70-200 SSM and want to extend the range by a factor of two, you need this teleconverter. Although not cheap by any means, it is a superb optical instrument and perfectly matched for the SSM. The only downside is the cost. But the results speak for themselves.
