Product Highlights
  • Includes Removable Diffuser

The Digi-Slave L-Ring 3200D is a powerful, versatile LED ring light that has been specially designed for macro photography and is compatible with any digital camera. The 3200D version includes a diffusion filter that covers the LEDs. This softens even further the light output, which is preferable in many macro situations.

Equipped with 32 oversized, bright white LEDs, it features a variable power dial to quickly and easily optimize the light output. A larger inner diameter makes the 3200 compatible with almost any SLR lens. It is built with 72mm filter threads, but can be adapted with the use of standard step-up or down rings (not included).

It can be used as a continuous light source, and can also be triggered from a standard PC or hot-shoe sync. This compact, lightweight ring light is perfect for any kind of close-up photography - dental, catalog, jewelry, etc.

A function switch allows half of the LEDs to be switched off to aid in resolving surface details
Diffusion filter for extra softening effect
Larger inner diameter that can accommodate any lens up to 77mm diameter
Full or half light capability (modes for full ring, left side only, and right side only)
Variable power dial to easily control the exposure
Type Flash/LED

Does exactly what the Kino Flo Kamio does except instead of costing like [$] [don't quote me on that] and being really intricate to set up and easy to break, it's only [$] and you can throw the thing across the room without any LED's breaking haha. I'm happy as heck! I shoot music videos, a lot of rappers, and they love this thing. However, it's pretty dang bright so if your subject isn't supposed to be wearing sunglasses (and you're shooting at night) prepare to have them squinting for a while before their eyes adjust.I really can't complain at all, this thing is awesome. Just make sure you grab the right step up/down ring to fit your lens' thread size.

Prior to ordering this product, I thought it might be the best option for a ring light. Believed it would be good quality, more flexible than a strobe-only based ring light and offer better compatibility across the various cameras I use vs. a strobe ring light from a single camera manufacturer.

In limited use, I found some things about this unit which in the end has made me decide to return it.

      1) Light Output: The ring light can be used in wired strobe mode as well as continuous mode, however in continuous mode the directions caution you to turn off the light between shots to prevent overheating. I was disappointed to discover that the light output between the two modes can be different (i.e. different exposures). The continuous light mode is not particularly well managed for consistent light output as your battery drains. Users of higher end LED flashlights know that it's possible to manage near level light output with the proper circuit design. Even as your battery drains, the strobe mode continues to provide higher output, however your exposure in strobe mode varies by shutter speed even in a completely darkened room. I believe what is happening is that LEDs don't strobe nearly as quickly as a flash tube. The unit will sync as fast as 1/200 sec, but will have significantly lower light output than setting your shutter at 1/30 (I remember seeing over a 1 stop difference in light output).

      2) Mechanical: The design of the diffuser is a joke. They expect it to stay on with a pressure fit; and with my unit it doesn't. The manufacturer sent me some clear rubber bands which were completely ineffective. With a larger rubber band it sort of stayed on, but not very well. Last thing you need with a delicate tabletop setup is to have the diffuser come rolling down. If you use it, tape it in place. The battery holder on my unit gets stuck inside the unit and you have to shake it back and forth and eventually the battery holder flies out of the body. Forget about changing the batteries with the unit mounted on your lens. The manufacturer sent me another holder which actually worked worse. As others have mentioned, you'd expect a product in this class to have a quick release feature rather than being threaded onto the lens. Most of the sub $80 products out there have a quick release setup. You can also turn on the LEDs on either side or both, but the unit rotates freely without a position lock. If you want your lighting oriented at an angle you must tape the head in position. Overall, the mechanical design is unrefined.

      3) Compatibility: In strobe mode the unit worked as a manual unit. The one exception is while trying to use it in Canon live-mode. Only Canon TTL units work in live-mode on a T2i. If you are using the EOS Utility to take a series of shots for focus stacking this renders the Digi-Slave useless unless you go into continuous lighting and you really don't want to be touching the camera/lens/ring light macro setup if doing focus stacking so turning the light on and off isn't realistic. This limitation isn't a fault of the Digi-Slave, but it's a reality. In theory, a Metz 15 MS-1 should work with Canon TTL, so there may be ways of solving this situation without buying vendor specific gear.

I spoke with the manufacturer, who was very responsive and offered great support, but in the end the product's shortcomings for my needs were too significant. If this was one of the run-of-the-mill sub $80 lights you can buy, I'd be more forgiving, but this is a fairly expensive unit and I expected more.

For the price it is the best "bang for buck." If you are shooting with lenses 72mm or larger I would not recomend this.

                Use it wisely!

Comments about Digi-Slave L-Ring 3200D LED Ring Light with Diffuser:

It's a really good flash for Macro photography and can do a good job as a fill flash/video light provided you zoom-in a lot. Otherwise there's a lot of vigneting... I would have expected the ring to be sitting a bit more on the lens than in front of it.

The filter thread is attached directly to the light and cannot be separated, making installation tedious. A quick release could have solved this issue, but the build is rugged except for the flash trigger cable (which is too short) that I expect to break within the first year.

I'm using this on a Canon G12 with the 58mm filter adapter and close up lens. The constant light helps the camera focus and is much lighter in weight than my Nikon with 105mm macro and ring flash. I'm still working with the color balance as the light is quite cold. This unit is much larger than my previous Digi-slave ring flash but the light is predictable and even. Just make sure to order your step up adapters.

This light is great for macro/close focus and copying. It has the capability to use half or all lights. You can turn it to whatever orientation you want. There is a continuous dimmer control. There is a flash mode, too. I haven't tried that.

I have owned this light since it was first introduced with no complaints. The brightness makes macro focusing easier. It is easy on batteries, too. The construction and assembly seem fine to me, but I am very easy on my equipment.

One more point to consider is that this model can be used with lenses with large diameters. I use mine on a Kowa Super 66 and macro lens with a 67mm filter size without a problem.

This ring light works great! It provide a wide beam and fits directly on my Panasonic DVX100B. With an adapter I can use it on my 58mm Digital Camera. It has AWESOME light control as well. The dimmer control works well along with the ability to turn off half the LEDs.

Comments about Digi-Slave L-Ring 3200D LED Ring Light with Diffuser:

Unit provides lots of continuous, cool light and the intensity can be controlled. The only negative is that there were no instructions for the diffuser on how to mount it. Called the manufacturer and found that there is a small nearly clear rubber ring which goes around the diffuser and holds it in. They sent several replacements and all is well.

Good ring light to use around a digital camera lense, especially for macro, to get even lighting. Good for dental professionals. Use step up ring to fit to your camera's lense.
