Product Highlights
  • Double Panning Ball Head
  • Choice of Optional Camera Plates
  • Supports 130 lb

The Arca Swiss Monoball Z1 dp with Flip-Lock Quick Release builds on the success and popularity of their B-series ball heads. Z-Series ball heads are just as elegant, and even more perfect. The size and weight of the ball heads have been significantly reduced. The ball and fastening are now assembled using a patented bayonet mount. Various accessories can thus be quickly mounted to adapt the tripod as required. Separate purchase of an Arca or Arca-type camera plate is required for use.

In addition to the proven, patented Arca-Swiss features, including aspherical ball heads, axial clamping and PMF (progressive motion related friction control), the Z-Series also boasts new technical developments and optimized materials and coatings. The Z-series can withstand an incredible 130 lb (59 kg) off-axis.

This model is the "dp" version, which features double panning. This means that besides for the standard pan base at the bottom of the head you also get a second panning mechanism below the camera mount. It can keep the camera perfectly vertical to the swinging plane, and is ideal for perfect panoramic stitching.

Ever since their introduction over forty years ago, the Arca Swiss Monoballs have been at the forefront of quality and performance. Today, their unique shape (an ellipse rather than a sphere) is still what separates them from all others. With other ball heads, no matter how good the tension modulation, you invariably will need to increase the tension control as you move the load away from the center. This is because gravity has a greater effect on gear when not perfectly level.

The Arca Swiss Monoball eliminates the need to modulate the tension, because its elliptical nature corrects it by virtue of its own design. The load stays exactly where you tell it to once it's locked into position. A separate control is set to apply a constant minimum friction, which allows the photographer the peace of mind that comes with knowing that his gear will never move of its own volition. The heavier the equipment, the more the advantages of the Arca Swiss become evident.
A tension adjustment thumb-dial is built into the indexed friction control knob.
The Flip-Lock quick release system offers double safety locking features, with instant flip-lock release of the clamp, for quick mounting and dismounting of cameras. Separate purchase of a camera plate is required.

I was hesitating before buying this ballhead because of the other reviews. So I asked the Arca-Swiss representative at the New York PhotoPlus expo for his explanation. In short: the reviewers did not know how to use it, forced the lever open, and consequently damaged the mechanism. His claim is also that the ballhead is robust and reliable if used properly. After owning & using the ballhead for 6 months, I have to agree with him.
Still, Arca-Swiss is not totally blameless, even if nothing is wrong with the ballhead: the documention that comes with it, a xerox copy of a poorly written page, is lacking. If one does not read it, then I'm not surprised that she/he may misuse the head. The issue is when trying to release the clamp. The lever flips out in a 2 step motion. First one pushes a small button at the top of the flip-lock lever out. This releases the lever, which can be turned *half-way*. At which point until one feels the lever cannot be pushed further out (do not force it or you'll damage the head!). The non-obvious part how to release the lever to complete the 2nd half of the motion. There is another safety to push: it's the ridged rod inside the lever which has to be pushed out until you feel the lever is released. At which point you may just release the safety and flip the lever out entirely.
The head is fantastic. It has never frozen on me (as some have reported for older versions of the head). Everything is metal, precision-made, and inspire confidence. In particular I've used the flip lever countless times without a problem. Once used to it, I think it is a little faster and easier to attach and release the camera than for the version with a knob, but it's not IMO an earth-shattering difference either. The lever is not flimsy at all: it must have required a lot of force to pry it opened without releasing the safety as instructed.
This being said. there is always room for improvement, of course. The screw which is used to adjust the head to the clamp is hard to rotate (this being said, my RRS L-plate did fit right in without adjustments). Also it would be great to have the option of a spirit level like in the one found in some Kirk release platforms. And all in all I feel the release mechanism - the one that has caused so much aggravation to the other reviewers - would be easier to use if one would use the same action to release the lever for the 2nd half of the rotation than for the first half.

If you are not careful the thumbscrew can come off and the springs will come out. This is the worst lever quick release plates I have used. I own some from RRS and they are wonderful. Arca-Swiss needs to redo their plates. The are hard to use. I would only buy the ones with the knobs.

Comments about Arca-Swiss Monoball Z1 dp with Flip-Lock Quick Release:

When you shoot in a portrait format that second pan makes vertical movements much faster and very much easier than trying to pan vertically by rotating the ball.
When panning horizontally you can set the camera to the angle above or below the horizon and still pan level with the horizon.
Combined with the Gitzo Tripod with extra long legs it is always able to be a stable platform.

Comments about Arca-Swiss Monoball Z1 dp with Flip-Lock Quick Release:

I know the Pros rave about the RSS. I have not used the RSS ballhead, but am completely satisfied with this Z1 double-pan. I like the double-pan feature, giving me a lot of flexibility.

The flip-lock is cumbersome, but once you figure it out and adjust the clamp screw for the width of your plates - I am using Wimberleys, it works well. This flip-lock is not intuitive.

The trick to using the flip is 1) pull the silver button down towards the end of the flip-lock and pull the flip to the 1/2 unlocked position. You can slide the plate in this position, assuming you have adjusted the screw within the clamp assembly. (2) on the underside of the flip, there is a notched slider - use your finger-nails on the notches to slide the slider back, and pull the flip to the complete unlock position.

So it is a bit cumbersome, and if it ever fails, I'll buy just the RSS clamp to replace. Until then, I am happy with this ballhead.

Comments about Arca-Swiss Monoball Z1 dp with Flip-Lock Quick Release:

This is my first ball head, and I have combined it with a Gitzo Explorer tripod (GT2451EX). This should give me more than enough flexibility for doing macro shots, plus enough stability for other uses. So far so good. Have been able to use this setup without any trouble at all. Movements feel smooth, setup feels stable when locked.

Regarding the flip lock, it took less than 60 seconds while examining the instructions to figure out how it works. It took maybe ten tries to really have it down to a single, fluid motion to fully open the flip lock. I appreciate the two-stage opening mechanism, as it allows you to make sure you have a grip on your camera before you fully release it from the ball head. Should hopefully help in preventing accidental gear falls!

The Z1 dp is a superb ballhead. While I tossed up between the Z1 and the RRS BH-55. I settled for the Z1 because of the double pan feature, but I did have some concerns about the flick-lock quick release after reading some critical blogs. My concerns were unwarranted, it took me all of about 30 seconds to work out how to operate the release. as long it is not forced it is not flimsy and both it and the ballhead are easy to use. This is a fine piece of equipment and has exceeded all my expections. I recommend it without hesitation.

The most enjoyable aspect is the double-pan feature, a definite time saver. Now that I own Arca-Swiss, I will never go back ! True Pro-Grade head. The more popular brands don't even come close.

Comments about Arca-Swiss Monoball Z1 dp with Flip-Lock Quick Release:

This tripod head is rock solid. When you tighten the head, your camera is going nowhere, even if it is heavy. The dual panning feature makes framing a shot much easier since the tripod itself need not be perfectly level. And the knobs are smooth and easy to use.

So why four and not five stars?

                            1) The lever is a bit fragile. I've not had any problems, but it is clear that it is the weak link in the product. Many others have commented similarly, so I'll leave it at that.

                            2) This is my second Z1. The first had to be returned because when I would tighten it the head would drift a bit due to the tightening. (The camera was rock solid, but it wasn't in exactly the same position as it was when I started tightening it.) Not good. But B&H replaced it without hassle (except that the head was sold out so I had to wait a few weeks to get the replacement).

                            3) I've not read this elsewhere: be aware that some of the parts are non-stainless steel. They will rust. You need to wipe down the head carefully, especially around the lever, after each use - particularly if it gets at all wet. This is a disappointment. A head this pricy should be made entirely of non-oxidizing parts. :-(

Would I recommend this? Yes, but only with the above caveats. Would I buy it again? I'd need to think about that...

Comments about Arca-Swiss Monoball Z1 dp with Flip-Lock Quick Release:

No play, precise, compact and beautifully constructed. Easier to transport than conventional tripod heads due to QR Flip-Lock feature.

The included instruction leaflet isn't the best. Look at other reader reviews for tips on using Flip-Lock. Great feature once mastered, and it's easily mastered. It does take some tweaking to adjust proper tolerances for plates using the interior set screw (even Arca plates). My guess is that this contributes as much to the few complaints of slippage as does misuse of the Flip-Lock. Once configured properly, the camera is perfectly secure.

Comments about Arca-Swiss Monoball Z1 dp with Flip-Lock Quick Release:

I am impressed with the build quality of this ballhead. Arca Swiss delivers very precise tolerances. I saw tons if comments regarding the quick release, and they are there for a good reason, I would not have been able to figure out how to open it up completely just by looking at the sorry manual included in the box. To flip the lever all the way you must pull on the screw itself (!) with your finger nail, NOT the tiny nob you normally would use to open it half way. Weird constructions, but I love it.
                                    Highly recommended.
Note: you can remove washers to adjust the head to your specific plates, if it doesn't fit after adjusting it with the little wheel.

I purchased this monoball with the hopes that I would finally have the control and security I've been looking for. Arca Swiss does not disappoint! I've never felt smoother "action" and such precision. Getting the camera plate fitted was a little tricky if this is your first time fitting one, (you need to pinch the two sides together while you're tighening the plate) but once I got it on there, it was ON THERE! I have the Universal Camera Plate 1/4" Small by Arca Swiss attached to my Canon 5D and even with a 3.5lb telephoto lens on it, whatever position you set it to, it's stays there.
