The Arca Swiss Monoball Z1 dp (Double Pan) Ballhead builds on the success and popularity of their B-series ballheads. Z-Series ballheads are just as elegant, and even more perfect. The size and weight of the ball heads have been significantly reduced. The ball and fastening are now assembled using a patented bayonet mount. Various accessories can thus be quickly mounted to adapt the tripod as required.
In addition to the proven, patented Arca-Swiss features, including aspherical ball heads, axial clamping and PMF (progressive motion related friction control), the Z-Series also boasts new technical developments and optimized materials and coatings. The Z series can withstand an incredible 130 lb (59 kg) off-axis.
This model is the "dp" version, which features double panning. This means that besides for the standard pan base at the bottom of the head you also get a second panning mechanism below the camera mount. It can keep the camera perfectly vertical to the swinging plane, and is ideal for perfect panoramic stitching.
Ever since their introduction over forty years ago, the Arca Swiss Monoballs have been at the forefront of quality and performance. Today, their unique shape (an ellipse rather than a sphere) is still what separates them from all others. With other ballheads, no matter how good the tension modulation, you invariably will need to increase the tension control as you move the load away from the center. This is because gravity has a greater effect on gear when not perfectly level.

This is my first Arca-Swiss product. I am amazed by the quality. Very well made and designed. My only regret is that I did not buy it sooner. A fine example of "you get what you pay for..."

This is the only ball head you need for your DSLR cameras. This model is the "dp" version, which features double panning. It can keep the camera perfectly vertical to the swinging plane (and vertical), and is ideal for perfect panoramic stitching. The I prefer the screw type quick release over the lever quick release. It's just so much easier, accessible and more rigid. Although you can tilt it 90º you might want an L-bracket too to keep the camera in the center.

Comments about Arca-Swiss Monoball Z1 dp with Quick Release:
I bought this as my first head after reading so many reviews and advice posts about spending as much as you could afford. I don't regret it. Actually saved some money by building my own tripod so I thought I'd blow the rest on this head. Action is smooth and I'd be surprised if there is a better head out there. Several of my product designer buddies were quite impressed with the smooth motion and quality of workmanship/tolerances.

I have used a couple of other brand ball heads, but they didn't close to the quality of this head. The head is rock solid when locked or adjustable with a twist of a dial. Arca-Swiss plates makes quick change a breeze.

Like the headline says, its solid as a rock and as heavy as one to.
I have a gitzo GH2750QR and I always noticed a little drift in it. I wanted a solid head to shoot landscapes with so I ordered the Z1. It does the job very well as it should for what you pay.

I had a single pan, but never could pan level. The tripod has a bubble balance, with one on the camera, level can be achieved. It may not sound like much unless you need to pan. Then you can understand the time it saves.

Rock solid ballhead that can hold yr equipment firmly. Good choice for DSLR with long lens & medium format cameras.
Double pan works well to keep the leveling, no need to consider third party pan heads. One head do all.

Comments about Arca-Swiss Monoball Z1 dp with Quick Release:
It was a choice between another Realy Right Stuff BH-55 PCL ballhead which has an almost identical quick release and independent panning head just under the camera or the Arca Swiss Z1. Both have great reputations and for good reason. Having used both now for several months I can highly recommend both. The Z1 is a bit lighter than the RRS BH-55 but the RRS head is a bit faster due to the degree of turning needed to loosen then tighten the head. Both have very little movement of the camera-lens when being tightened which is especially important with macro photography with the Z1 having a slight edge over the RRS head.
I the very happy owner of the Z1 ball head and expect it to last a life time.

Arca Swiss makes some of he most beautifully designed and impeccably manufactured equipment I have seen. I use this Monoball with my 35mm dslr, my medium format Phase one and my 4x5 view camera. The stability and ease of motion with this head gives me a secure feeling that my cameras are safely mounted. The range of motion available with the head allow me to position the Camera at any point and know that I can get the shot.
