The VCL-HG1737C High Grade Telephoto Converter Lens brings distant subjects closer. The 1.7X Telephoto extends the focal length of camcorder or digital camera lenses 1.7 times, bringing things twice as close, throughout the zoom range. This moderate converter allows you to double the optical range of your camera, and keeps you out of the digital telephoto range where pictures begin to lose resolution and pixelate.

Before purchasing this tele-extender I tried the less expensive Sony extender. My images were soft so I returned that one and bought this one from B&H. The additional elements brought back much sharper images than the cheap extender. This one is a keeper. The extra quality comes at the expense of added weight and bulk. Added to my small HD camcorder the extender shifts the balance a bit but when you need the range optical extension beats digital enlargement by a long shot.

The good: exceptional clarity, no degradation compared to the built in lens on my hvr-a1u.
The bad: unless you are using the lens at about 75-100% zoom capacity, you will have black vignetting on your image!! This is similar to the effect seen on tv when they are trying to suggest you are looking through a telescope. What's worse is the vignetting effect did NOT show on the LCD screen during shooting and it ruined a shoot for a high school football game.
If you can keep your zoom at 75% or greater, it's a great lens. But for any action sport where the subject is constantly moving, this is NOT acceptable.

Converts my Sony PJ260 from(35mm equivlant)890mm to 1520mm the image is sharp, with a little cromatic abborasion , excellent super tele with enough zoom to make it really a functional lens, built very rugged.

This Tele converter is clear as you have heard in most comments. It works on the NX70U quite well. As expected for converters of this type, it vignettes at about 75% zoom when steady shot is off or set to standard, but it is uesful from about 55% from wide to tele on the W----T scale when steady shot is set to active. Great for nature shots, sports or other events. It is very well made with a decent price for what you get. It does not affect auto focus and has a light fall off of about 1 f stop.

At halfway wide angle it forms a shadow circle around composition because the lens mounting size is smaller than the camera. To install it you have to use the reducer adapter that came with the camera, 52mm down to 37mm

The greatest weekness for the Sony HVR-HD1000U is the 10 X zoom. The telephoto converter just screws over the normal lense and now you have a 17 X zoom.
The lense does have one flaw: you must stay between 9X and 17 X zoom. Any closer and you will get dark rounded corners.

We made a good investment on VCL-HG1737C Lens.
In the past, we used different camcorders we could not get that perfect image at night on the big screen that is why we decided to purchase this camcorder. We bought this camcorder because of specs and what it can do specially the minimum illumination and option to change the lens and memory card.
We were a little skeptical about the purchase. Yet this past Saturday, March 3, 2012 was the first time we have used it with a live performance. We have two giant double vision screens 11x15 on each side of the stage. The view of the color, zoom, and projection was unbelievably clear. We were very happy we purchased this camcorder. We got a lot of compliments on the picture quality that it was very clear. We were recording 60ft away from the stage using the VCL-HG1737c lens, bought at B&H, too. It was worth the money spent on this camcorder and lens.

The image is clean and crisp and for my 10x standard lens this gives the reach needed to stay out of digital zoom. As noted the effective usable range is limited to the last 1/2 of the zoom range or you get tunnel vision.. for example if your standard lens gives you good shots form 1 yard to 50 yards adding this Telephoto lens will give you good shots from 40 yards to 90 yards but is unusable in that 0 to 40 range.. So you will have to give some thought to where your subject is going to be. Like any tool you have to know how to use it, to get any use out of it.

I film my sons when they surf. We live in Hawaii. Some breaks very far away and even though the zoom on my camcorder would handle the distance, with this telephoto converter the quality of my video is so much higher, than without it. Plus it makes it easier to see them.
These telephoto lenses can be used on many different models. I bought one ten years ago for my older camcorder, when I upgraded my camcorder I had this and the battery with me and I used it on 3 different camcorders.
