The Fieldscope III ED 20-60x60 Spotting Scope Kit is Nikon's sensible choice for observers who want to carry their scope for extended distances, but still demand the finest optical performance money can buy. Extra-low dispersion glass provides optimum focus of the color spectrum to a single point, and when observing contrasty, intricate & glare-filled subject matter you'll easily see the difference. This high-quality scope is easy to handle and is fully water and fogproof.

Its angled viewing design is commonly considered to be easier to use amongst those of varied height, as well as easier for a single observer glassing for extended periods. In addition, the Nikon 60 ED Fieldscope arrives to you with the Vue-Thru case. This valuable accessory is quite nearly a necessity.

The included Nikon MC Series Zoom Eyepiece offers a long zoom range of 20-60x, which is the longest in the Nikon range of eyepieces.

Note: Covered by Nikon's 25-year no-fault repair/replacement policy

Comments about Nikon Fieldscope III 60mm ED 2.4"/60mm Spotting Scope Kit:

This is our first good birding scope but I have had a Questar Duplex for some 40 years mostly for astronomy as I find it to large to lug around, to slow to use for most birding and too delicate to bump around with when traveling.

We loved the Fieldscopes case and quick set up on a light tripod (vs a pretty heavy one we use for the Questar), simple use and ruggedness. Easily slides into a small RV compartment just in the slip on case. Again unlike the Questar which needs more gentle care and more storage space.

Optically it is excellent up to around 30x with the zoom lens then you do notice contrast dropping off beyond that. When we used it for smaller birds well out past the surf, ~1/4-1/2 mile, you might want a bigger scope but we could still ID most if they had any distinguishing marks. We could make out facial patterns and the orange legs on Tufted Puffins.

I do find the focusing a bit touchy at the higher powers and longer distances, a fine focus knob might help but really for those situations this may not be the best scope.

I also wish it would zoom without the need to refocus, that's a little annoying. An upside to this design was I found using the eyepiece zoom feature was sometimes a good 'fine focus' at the higer zoom powers. ie after manual focus as best i could i could change the zoom power a little to get a sharper image.

The slip on case can feel a bit 'in the way' but the protection it offers makes it a much easier scope to pull out and tuck away so we leave it on all the time.

We are very pleased with it for our use. All in all excellent optics and the small size and weight just make it easy to use. We considered cheaper scopes but in the end knew we would not regret the extra cost as we use this over many years to come.
