Questions? Ask our experts:

The Giottos MT-9360 Aluminum Tripod Legs, as part of the professional-level MT III series, has a unique center column design, is versatile and easy to use, but yet still economical.

The unique swiveling center column mounting design allows it to be used as a lateral arm with angle adjustment, which is especially useful for nature and macro photography. The column can also be used upside down and reversed. It allows for 360° horizontal and 180° vertical adjustment, and the column can be positioned and set quickly by using the locking knobs.

In addition, the top part of the center column separates from the main column. By slipping this short camera platform into the swiveling center column mount, you now effectively have a universal 3-way head. This set-up also allows the tripod to be used for very low down-to-the-ground shots.

I purchased this tripe primarily for crime scene use. My requirements were simple -it needed to be solid, stable, have lots of positioning options, and be affordable. Here's how the 9360 fared:

Solid-better than the manfrotto 055 I was fixing to buy. Everything on this beast is aluminum or rubber, and very well-machined. There is NO plastic to break on the center shaft or leg joints. Heavier by about a pound, but I'd rather have something I won't break.

Stable- Well, when you lock the legs out, they stay out. They are generally thick enough that you get little sway or flex, even for heavy-handed guys like me. That said, the 3-section tripe (9361) is what I should have gotten for even more rigidity and stability.

Positioning- Most people won't have a need for the REALLY COOL moveable center shaft. There are times I have to shoot photos of tire or shoe impressions, and that is where this tripe shines. Flipping the center shaft for a straight-down shot is ok, but looking through the viewfinder and making adjustments can be awkward. With this tripe, I simply move the center shaft horizontal, then continue adjusting until I get the shot I want. Easy viewing and making adjustments. I can retract the legs to put me closer to the ground if I need it. This would be great for anyone doing macro work on the ground. This was the feature that sold me.

Affordable- being a cop is synonymous with being broke. That said, the 9360 was cheaper than the 055xproB by enough for me to buy a ball head. OH, that was a mistake with this tripe. It REALLY shines with a good pan/tilt, at least in my line of work.

I would buy a MT III series again in a heartbeat, but I'd probably go with a 3-section. The almost 6" longer folded length would be no sacrifice for the extra stability. The tripe is plenty tall enough for me to extend the legs and not have to raise the center shaft any. The included carry case is NICE, fully padded with zipper pockets and straps. As it is, I'm mostly satisfied with the Giottos....EXCEPT that it is made in China. I would have paid $10 or $20 more for this tripe if it had been made in almost ANY other country. Also, the aluminum spikes will loosen up on their own, so I use rubber washers to keep them tight.

I've owned a few cheap sub $50 tripods and a lowend Bogen Manfrotto. This is to date the most I've spent on a tripod. It's a little bit difficult to figure out at first. But once you do it works like a charm.

This is the first tripod that's required me to calibrate the stiffness of the joints. Using the tools included with the tripod you can loosen up screens to allow the legs to spread out easier.

Currently I'm using this tripod mainly for my panoramic stitches.

I purchased this tripod because of its ability to hold so much weight...near 20lbs if I remember correctly. It was not the lightest tripod but not the heaviest either. To get a tripod that could support as much weight and weigh around 3lbs would have cost me double the money.

I purchased this tripod with a separate Giotto Quick Release head.

Ok I am in a food coma so I hope my comments help some how.

Comments about Giottos MT-9360 Aluminum Tripod Legs:

I've been using this tripod for years and thought I'd finally write a review about it.

It's a very sturdy tripod and when I mount my camera to it I trust that it'll do what I need it to do. In the last four years I've taken it everywhere. Europe, across the lower 48 States, New Zealand and three of the Hawaiian Islands. I've done time lapse and long exposure astro photogrpahy with this tripod out in extreme weather. This tripod is a monster. Its still with me. And its just small enough to fit in my overhead luggage. I love this thing.

The cons are its weight and size. I would prefer that it was lighter and folded down to a smaller size. I do a lot of hiking to remote areas and a lot of walking around in the cities so the 5lb tripod that folds down to 22" was a little too bulky and heavy when combined with a backpack carrying a 100-400mm, 24-70mm f/2.8 and two cameras.

I wanted to write this review as a dedication to my tripod. Its been wonderful, and I'm keeping it but I do plan to move onto a new tripod for my travels.

I'm getting a Gitzo Traveler. Its half the weight and fold down about 5-6 inches shorter than the Giotto. But its also 2-3x the price of this tripod.

Comments about Giottos MT-9360 Aluminum Tripod Legs:

I bought this mainly for the tilting center column and independent leg angle settings, to use with macrophotography. It had better reviews than the equivalent Manfrotto. I'm loving it so far; it's by far the sturdiest and steadiest tripod I've ever used. It's no lightweight, but that's not a major issue for me compared to its solidity. The 4-section legs help keep its folded length reasonable even though it's maximum height is quite tall (I can't see through the viewfinder if it's all the way up). The twist locks on the legs are a bit slower to use than the flip locks on my other, lighter tripods, but it only takes 1/4 turn to lock and unlock them, so it's still pretty quick. It comes with a nice bag (long enough to hold the tripod with the ball head attached), and shoulder straps for both the bag and the tripod itself. The tripod strap doubles as a cinch to hold the legs folded.

Comments about Giottos MT-9360 Aluminum Tripod Legs:

Use this for multi-row composites and some macro work. I find it rock solid with 3 leg sections extended, a hair less with all 4 sections extended, but this is also rather tall. The legs really do only require about a quarter to half turn of each section to unlock and relock.

The system for securing the center column, both when vertical, and when at an angle, is very strong. No problem here shooting with center column fully extended horizontally. No play at all once tightened.

One thing to be very careful of though, is when you are switching from vertical to angled, as it is very easy to slide the center column completely out. Must have a very good grip on the tripod head, or camera! if you leave it on as you're switching.

Because it is a 4 section tripod, it does pack up to a very small and portable size.

I really liked this tripod, the quality of its materials is really really good. In my personal opinion it beats the quality of similar-priced manfrottos .

The only bad thing I could find is that it is heavy... but for the load capacity (kg) I think is understandable.

I have owned this tripod for 5 years and it has been a great tripod. This tripod survived a major car wreck in which the truck flipped 3 times and the topper (which is where the tripod was located) flew off. I found the tripod laying in the ditch and it still works perfectly. A few scratches that's all! I would recommend this tripod to anyone!

I needed a tripod with lateral arm to take photos of large still life set-ups in the studio. This is perfect. Easy to set up, all the parts feel well-made and solid, the legs lock firmly into place, and the arm really could not be easier to slip from horizontal to vertical. I use it only in the studio, so I don't care about weight or compact folding. I wish the arm were about 3 inches longer in the horizontal position, but that's not something most people will need. In short, I love it!

Comments about Giottos MT-9360 Aluminum Tripod Legs:

I'm sorry to say the 'made in China' issue bit me. Even as careful as I am with my equipment, the mounting plate on the center column bean loosening up. While tightening it, the portion of the plate that attaches to the center column sheared off. The plate was in fact a poorly-cast piece of aluminum. Chinese engineering at it's finest.

The design is still excellent -I'm only disappointed in how it failed to hold up. I'm also disappointed in how Giottos fails to back their product. Even with a casting failure, I have to buy a replacement plate. Time to start looking around again. Where is a good, reasonably-priced American company when you need them?

Comments about Giottos MT-9360 Aluminum Tripod Legs:

Bought this tripod from B&H because my 4 months old Manfrotto 190CXPRO3's center column is not usable in horizontal position. Regardless how tight I tightened it, it always has a play.

The Giottos 9360 really surprised me. It's my first Giottos tripod. It's very solid. The center column can be tightened in any angle and still remain solid and usable. It can also be put in reverse direction and change to a shorter center column which also come with the tripod.

The 9360 also comes with a well made bag and a small accessories carrying bag.

I can see Giottos puts lots of creative design to make this 9360 competitive. And the price is very good. It's a much better value than the Manfrotto tripods.

Another reason I bought this tripod is for its weight. Heavier weight is required if you really want to use the center column in horizontal position. And this tripod did not disappoint me.

I also like the way the tripod legs tightened. It only takes less than a quarter turn to tighten. So it is very quick and it will not catch something accidentally like the Manfrottos.

I'd highly recommend this tripod for anyone who look for a heavy and solid tripod with good value.

Comments about Giottos MT-9360 Aluminum Tripod Legs:

This is a solid tripod with good build.

I bought this tripod from B&H because the swiveling center column in my Manfrotto 190CXPRO3 didn't really work. I can never fix the swiveling center column regardless how much I tighten it. There is always some play even though it is only 4 months old. Also 190CXPRO3 is too light. So when you put the central column in horizontal position, the setup is just too light to be useful. This is also why I bought this Giottos alumina tripod. Weight matters.

Giottos puts many innovations into the tripod design. The central swivel column can be put to almost any angle and can be locked solid. You can also mount it reversely. It also comes with a very short center column in case you just want to it get to as low as possible. None of these the Manfrotto 190CXPROC can do.

The tripod also comes with an very well made tripod bag and a little gadget bag that holds all little tools and accessories.

The Giottos rotational leg locks also works very fine. It takes less than 1/2 turn to lock. And unlike the flip type leg lock in Manfrotto 190CXPRO, the rotational leg locks will not catch anything. It works as good as my Gitzo 3530. And I like it.

I read some people said this is too heavy. But this is why I got this alumina tripod. I plan to use it in the streams for flowing water shots. And I don't think a lighter tripod will work. So its heavy weight is a pro to me as well.

This tripod may not be your choice for traveling if light weight is desired.

Overall, I think this Giottos tripod is a much better value than the Manfrotto's.

Comments about Giottos MT-9360 Aluminum Tripod Legs:

I purchased this tripod for the features it has and its cost.

The tripod folds to less than 2 feet, great for traveling.
The ability to use the center column in various positions.
Twist-lock legs to reduce the room in luggage while traveling.

Overall build quality is excellent. All controls are smooth but firm, no play.

Comes with a great carrying case too.

Weight here was not an issue since the tripod it is replacing was aluminum and around the same weight too.

I use this tripod for self portraits, family get togethers(so everone is in the shot). its very easy to setup and provides a solid mount even with my 500 mm zoom lens using tripod collar on lens.the monopod that comes with it is of good quality and does the job for a non pro like me;the included carry case is also a nice feature.I've owned at least four tripods since I got into photography. this one is the best one of them all.

I like how twist locks work can loosen all three at the same time. They tighten well and seems to be very sturdy and solid. I like how the center column works for macro however this is were I removed the 4 star because it seems to drop when the camera is all the way in its horizontal position.

While the tripod is a little heavy to take on hiking trips it provides a very sturdy base and I feel that unless you do serious wildlife photography with long prime lenses this is all you need.

The MT-9360 tripod is very strong. I believe it will be enough for most non-pro, or even pro, as long as you don't put a 800mm telephoto on it. It has 4 sections. I carried it to 8000 feet mountain without any problems. I mainly use it for travel. I can put it into its nice bag with a MH3300 ball head. The Pros are 1) 4 sections 2) Independent leg unfolding angle, especially important to limited space 3) nice bag with good protection 4) can handle pro level gears if combined with MH3300 ball haed, 1D mark III+100-400mm L 5) This tripod + MH330 I paid [$].:)Cons: 1) You have to screw the legs to tighten or unfold, This prevents it get a 5 star. rating

For its price is very solid and versatile. I can put it in impossible places and it is still stable and sturdy. It supports heavy weights without problem.
Leveling bubble is quite inefficient but a good head could compensate this.

Comments about Giottos MT-9360 Aluminum Tripod Legs:

I use this to this Tripod with Giottos MH 1300-657 Ballhead to support my heaviest setup (Pentax K20D + FA* 80-200/2.8 + AF 540 FGZ) and it holds really well. I'm sure this can hold even more than this.

The great thing about this is how useful the center column is for macro work. As long as I'm careful, the tripod can hold my heaviest setup with center column pointed down. Just make sure it parallel with one leg so the tripod won't trip.

Another good thing is the leg lock is sealed so I won't be afraid to use it in the beach or river.

The leg tip has both rubber and spike included. Very nice feature. You just need to remove the rubber to use the spike for better grip.

The head screw can be used both with 1/4" or 3/8". You just need to flip it according to what you need.

The finish looks great but the paint on the leg chip easily. I accidentally open the leg with the lock not fully opened and the paint on the leg stopper peeled. Luckily the base of the aluminium has similar color so it's not so apparent.

The tripod leg + ball head is considerably heavy. But the carbon version only 0.4 lbs less so it won't be too much different on total weight since the ball head is not carbon either.

It comes with a nice carrying bag and professional looking strap.
This whole set looks and feels really well made and professional.

If not for the easily peeled paint finish, I would have given 5 stars.

Another great product from Giottos indeed.

I've done my research before deciding this tripod and this one is the BEST Value for the money.

I compared this with Gitzo Explorer series. The Gitzo is also aluminium and has similar center column function. Gitzo is only a little bit less heavy but the holding capacity is also lower. Not mentioning the price is 2.5x more than this Giottos.
