Product Highlights
  • Waterproof & Fogproof
  • Roof Prism
  • 5.0° Angle of View

Across the Pentax line of sport optics, and even binoculars as a whole, the 10x50 DCF ED Binocular stands out as a great entry.  Part of Pentax's super-premium DCF ED series of extremely rugged roof prism units, it is blessed with pristine Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) glass elements.  As good as Pentax's previous efforts were, such as the very fine DCF SP models, nothing works quite like ED glass when it comes to eliminating any trace of chromatic aberrations.  The resolving power of the edge of your subject is impeccable, and the 10x50 DCF ED can hold detail in dark-colored birds or wildlife even when cast against a bleached, overcast sky.

All of the binoculars in the DCF ED series have every imaginable feature needed for the most demanding viewer, such as fully multicoated glass, large phase-coated roof prisms, nitrogen purged metal-based housings, and a hard water and dirt repelling coating on exterior elements.

All of Pentax's binocular line is backed by their "Worry-Free" warranty, which guarantees your binocular will be repaired or replaced no matter the cause for damage (even by your own fault) for a charge of $19.95.

ED Glass elements render colors more accurately and provide sharper images
Hybrid aspherical lens elements improve edge-to-edge sharpness
Every piece of glass is given extensive full multicoating to maximize light transmissivity across the entire visible spectrum
Eyepiece and objective elements hard coated with Pentax's water and dirt-repelling treatment
Locking ±3 dioptric correction
Magnesium-alloy body with protein-enhanced, hard-wearing rubber armor
JIS Class 6 weatherproofing standard (tested to withstand bombardment from water jets at all angles)
58-74mm Interpupillary adjustment range
Soft helicoid eyecups with 4 intermediary positions to suit any user
Pentax "Worry Free" Warranty
Pentax will repair or replace this binocular to the original purchaser (even if damaged by fault of the owner) for a charge of $19.95. This warranty does not cover cosmetic damage, theft or loss. Comments about Pentax 10x50 DCF ED Binocular:

I bought these to replace 9x25 Travelite III's for a trip to Alaska and they didn't disappoint. Clear and bright image, and great features!

Two problems, they are difficult to use at their smallest interocular range, and difficult to mount on a tripod. These are due to the narrow gap in between the big 50mm barrels when pushed in to the lowest interocular limit.

At it's smallest, the gap is less than 0.050". But the lens caps are on straps that are 0.230" wide x 0.070" wide. The caps flop down on the straps between the barrels and you have to constantly line up the straps to get near the lower interocular range. You can solve this by removing the cap nut and moving the caps and straps to the top of the binoculars, where they then get in the way of holding and focusing the binoculars. Or you can remove the caps and straps completely. Hassle.

The Pentax TP-3 tripod adapter is not supplied (and always out of stock) so I don't know its thickness, but I notice that Pentax says it does limit the smallest interocular range. I bought a Barska adapter, but it is 0.400" thick and won't even mount on the binoculars (due to the bulky thumbscrew). I had to build a 2.75" extension with threaded rod and a coupling nut to use it. But the binoculars have to be mounted upside down to get to the lowest interocular limit.

Pentax needs to address these drawbacks, esp. tripod mounting, to make these the perfect glasses.

Comments about Pentax 10x50 DCF ED Binocular:

I compared against several comparable priced binoculars from a wide variety of manufacturers, and these cleary stood out. Color correction, while not perfect, was very very good. You'll get excellent clear views through these! They are my hunting binoculars of choice!
