The Olympus RM-UC1 Remote Cable release connects to the OM-D E-M5 via a mini USB connector. This mini USB connection is less secure and more prone to falling out than the connection that Canon uses for the Canon cable releases (e.g. RS-80N3).

While taking photos with the camera mounted on my tripod, I had to be careful not to drop the remote after a shot, but to find a way to drape the remote over the camera/tripod so as not to put strain on the connection. I used the enclosed hook-and-loop tie to secure the remote to my L-plate - which worked very well. (Slightly reduces the usefulness of the L-plate, since I would need to anchor the cable release differently to rotate the camera to the vertical orientation... more experimenting necessary)

Olympus must be aware that the mini USB connection is less secure and more prone to falling out than photographers would like, since they include a hook-and-loop tie with the unit, and the instructions "To carry the camera with the remote cable connected, use the supplied clamps to fix the camera with the Strap or tripod. (See Figure A)" Figure A shows the hook-and-loop tie wrapped around the release cable and the camera strap. Since I have a wrist strap on the right side of the camera, and the mini USB connection is on the left side, it was tricksier for me to "fix" the cable to the camera.

On the positive side, it's very easy to tell which orientation to insert the mini USB connector; I found it very difficult to tell (or remember) which orientation the RS-80N3 went into my Canon cameras (used on both 10D and 5D) and resorted to writing "UP" on the plug.

I use the remote when shooting from my tripod, especially for long exposures and macros.
The length of cable is good for me, and the features are good.

What does not work so well is that the cable plugs into the camera port perpendicular to the camera--so it sticks out and is bumped easily. I have to reseat the cable into the port each time I move the tripod a little. However, there really is no other product that attaches differently to my knowledge...

Comments about Olympus RM-UC1 Remote Cable Release:

This Olympus remote shutter release works well. At first, I was somewhat concerned about getting a solid connection to the camera; but, those concerns went away when I actually attached it to the camera. Under normal use, I think this release will perform well for a very long time. The lock works easily and smoothly.

    Too BIG

    By Jack

Comments about Olympus RM-UC1 Remote Cable Release:

Cable release works fine, but it is too large.....I think it was made for Olympus's DSLR. I bought the OMD EM1 for its size for travel......I think Olympus needs to keep accessories comparable in size.

There are times, even with stabilization and fast ISO settings, that a tripod and cable release are really helpful. This electronic cable release serves the purpose well.

Comments about Olympus RM-UC1 Remote Cable Release:

I've been using the 2 second timer approach for years on my DSLR's and found it satisfactory, but somewhat annoying when I had to wait for the shutter to release. This cable release functions great and brought back fond memories of my 35mm days. I found the easy to pull out plug issue that some complain about somewhat of a benefit, as it acts a bit like a safety feature when I accidently yank on it.

I made the mistake of purchasing a cheaper off-brand version which did not work...so I was a little hesitant to try another. But I'm glad I did. This one worked exactly as it should. My camera is the Olympus OMD EM-10.

Functions well but significant weak point is plug-in USB attachment.
Needs more secure attachment to camera body.
I am not aware of alternative to this cable.

Comments about Olympus RM-UC1 Remote Cable Release:

This seems like a legacy remote from past, much larger Olympus cameras and is not well-scaled to the size and handling of the OM-D series. It functions exactly as expected for a remote release, but the control head is too large, the cable is rather stiff and uncooperative - it has a mind of its own- and the connector easily pulls out of the camera unless you soundly secure it with the supplied velcro. This is the only OM-D accessory with which I have have been dissapointed, simply because of the design's haptics and the awkward handling. I would return it if there was a better option, but I can't find one.

Comments about Olympus RM-UC1 Remote Cable Release:

I use this remote shutter release when my Olympus PEN E-P2 camera is attached to my spotting scope for bird photography. Vibration was always a problem with manual pressing of the shutter button. I had to use the 2 second delay so vibrations would settle down, but now I can shoot the picture at any instant with this remote device. The only problem with it is that the cable can too easily pull out of the USB port. I haven't yet worked out a way to secure it in the port. That's not a big problem, it doesn't fall out on it's own. I like that the cord is not excessively long so it doesn't dangle and catch on things. Yet it's long enough to allow me to stand a foot or two away from the camera.

Works just fine and because it uses the USB port on the camera works on several different models that I own. I like the velcro strap that came with it to help secure the release to the camera. B&H's service was great and the cable was received several days after the order was placed using regular surface mail.

Comments about Olympus RM-UC1 Remote Cable Release:

Expensive, but you get what you pay for, Olympus OEM quality. Would be nice if timer/interval functions were included at this price.

Comments about Olympus RM-UC1 Remote Cable Release:

I purchased this remote cable release to use for long exposures especially at sunset and night photos with my camera on a tripod. Good accessory for my E-620 camera.

Comments about Olympus RM-UC1 Remote Cable Release:

I use the remote when working on the tripod for macro and landscape and occasionally for portrait -- it enables me to totally minimise any movement of camera resulting in sharper images.

Comments about Olympus RM-UC1 Remote Cable Release:

I previously tried a generic (cheaper) shutter release for my E30 and it did not work. The RM-UC1 works great; cord length is good (not too long or too short) for working around a tripod. Button travel is good also, making it easy to press halfway to autofocus and look at the shot before actually releasing the shutter.
