The EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Lens from Canon is a high performance, water-resistant, ultra wide-angle L-series zoom lens. An f/2.8 maximum aperture is effective in low light situations and offers shallow depth of field focus control. The optical design has been improved to offer better edge-to-edge image quality. In addition, it features 3 high-precision aspherical lens elements, each of a different type: ground, replica and GMo. Its ultrasonic motor (USM) and improved AF algorithms will help the lens to focus faster and quieter. Precise manual focus is supported even in One Shot AF mode and a truly round aperture results in pleasing background blur.

All of the "L" lenses deliver optical performance equal to similar fixed focal lengths lenses and provide tight seal structures for dust and water resistance. Distortions and aberrations are remarkably small for a lens of such amazing capabilities. An included petal-style lens hood keeps unwanted light from entering the lens and causing flare and it offers a degree of protection against impact and the elements.

Ultra-low dispersion glass and three high-precision aspherical lens elements, each of a different type: ground, replica and GMo minimize aberrations and improve overall image quality.
A ring-type Ultrasonic motor (USM) provides quiet, fast, precision auto focusing and predictive tracking.
Full-time manual focus override (even in AF mode) is supported.
Circular aperture diaphragm produces brilliant out-of-focus characteristics.
A petal-type lens hood is included.

Fantastic wide angle lens that really shines on a full frame body such as the Canon 5D Mark II.I originally had the EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM which produced good images with high contrast and good colour reproduction, but sharpness was poor. In comparison, the 16-35mm II is ultra-sharp in the middle and more than acceptable in the corners (even when pixel peeping), with fantastic contrast and colours. The AF is fast and the build is solid. Some sample photos on different bodies:5D II: http://www.flickr.com/photos/filipmakowski/6157757391/in/photostream5D II: http://www.flickr.com/photos/filipmakowski/6157760781/in/photostream5D II: http://www.flickr.com/photos/filipmakowski/6157758417/in/photostream7D: http://www.flickr.com/photos/filipmakowski/6157759497/in/photostream7D: http://www.flickr.com/photos/filipmakowski/6158293534/in/photostream20D: http://www.flickr.com/photos/filipmakowski/6157752733/in/photostream

I have to say, I am a little suprised by all the reviews I have read regarding bad copies of a lens. I am shocked that at this price point, canon does not have some better quality control. These must be streaming out of china now or something. Anyways, this lens looks and feels well built, but the zoom was not real smooth. The shots I took were just not sharp or nice. My cheap kit lens on my 2Ti took far superior shots. I had this on my 5Dmk2 btw. I have 1 good lens, 100mm f/2.8 macro II L. That is just a mind blowing lens imo. I also have a vanilla canon 28mm f/2.8. Even the little 28 takes simply amazing crisp spot on shots. I have to say, the shots I took with this were washed out, not sharp and just plain dull. I have read some great reviews regarding this lens, and so I assume I got one of the talked about "bad copies". I would try it again someday, but for now I will just stick with primes. I guess I will replace it with the 14mm f/1.4 L canon prime lens. I did own a Sigma 10-22 that was used on my T2i, and it was simply an amazing lens. I miss it! it wont really work on the ff sensor though. Cheers Everyone!

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I bought this after needing a wider lens than my 24-70mm f2.8L. I am very satisfied with the focal range and with the AF of the lens is fast and works wonders in low light. A little soft in the borders wide open but it has a sweet spot about f5.6.
Color rendition and contrast are superb.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I borrowed a mk 1 version from a friend for a couple of months and unexpectedly fell in love with it. So after I finally returned it I had to buy one. I use a 6d and a c100, and it's great on both. Corners can be a tad dark on a full frame 6d, but Lightroom lens correction cleans it right up, and it's not that bad to begin with - you don't see it at all on a crop sensor. On the c100, the wide angle is a must have, and even without IS I find myself using it for handheld walking interview stuff. There is a new version coming out with IS, but it's f4, and I really like the DOF. Some of my best photos are with this lens. I tried out the 14mm but in the end it wasn't much wider, and the zoom was a HUGE benefit for me. The wide end is fun, but challenging to compose with. You can make long things look REALLY long, or you can make something close up look alone and lost in a huge background.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I was surprised at the weight of the lens. It seems to be much lighter than my other Cannon Lenses. The quality and sharpness and color saturation of the photos make it a very worth while investment. The 2.8f makes it great for focusing in interiors, especially dark European churches.

I used this lens for the first time on a recent trip to New Mexico and found that everything others have praised about this lens was true. I also compared it to the 2.8 Tokina, which I subsequently used on my camera, and quickly decided that the more expensive Canon was worth it.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I purchesed this lens to go along with my 5d MKIII. For years my go to lens was the 24-70mm f/2.8L USM and I love that lens. It's the lens that made me realize "L" is the way to go. The reason I got this lens was because I started doing interior photography and I needed something wider. This lens goes as wide as I would like and it doesn't distort the images too much.

As with all "L" lens it's sharp, fast, and has great build quality!

I do wish it went a little wider.
It was expensive, but well worth it. I should have bought it a year ago.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I finally had a chance to take a vacation and use my new Canon 16-35mm wide-angle lens, and it's great. I packed it with my EOS Mark III along with my utility lens: Canon EF 24-105mm USM lens. I used the 16-35mm for cloud shots and sunsets for wide shots, and it didn't disappoint me! The camera is relatively light and its tight construction characteristics were crucial in the desert environment of SW Texas where I used it. It had little to no vignetting and it was very sharp. It also had very little distortion at the 16mm setting. I would definitely recommend it to a friend.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

Image quality is superb with this lens. Debated a long time if I wanted to get this or the 17-40 f4. Glad I got this one since I have already used it at f2.8 several times which I would not have expected.Worth the $$$.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

Canon Wide Angle landscape quest. I have the 14 Rockinon, 21 Zeiss, 24 TSE, 24-70 Canon, and more. All very different. I ordered 2 of the 16-35s to test. Copy 1 decentered on left side. This lens renders like the 24-70 more than any other. The distortion at wide end is less than expected-less than Zeiss 21. The sunstar is out of this world. Color good, Ez to manual focus. Very solid all rounder. It is not as sharp as any of my current lenses. Would love the Nikon 14-24 for sharpness, but I have $2000 of 4x6 filters that I would have to upgrade, store, and carry. It is reasonably weather sealed. You MUST keep the UV on with Lee filter system. The outer lens barrel does not move, but the lens element moves in and out potentially leaving a gap for dust, sand, water to enter. Each lens serves a different purpose. I suspect the Markiii version of this lens will be out within 6-12 months, but I could not wait. Cheaper to buy it and upgrade than rent. I haven't tested Milky Way for comma, or printed large prints yet. But suspect there will some slight dissappointment there.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

I recently rented this lens for a landscape photo workshop in California. The images were amazing - sunrise, early morning fog, ocean, night sky, and sunset. As soon as I returned, I knew I needed to add the 16-35mm to my collection, so I purchased it from B&H. I've used the lens several times since, and I love everything about it! As a landscape photographer, it is definitely a must have.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

This lens is really what I needed-wide enough for landscapes and night photography with hardly any fisheye effect. The lens is remarkably light for its build, yet seems to be quite rigid. I really don't see the need for image stabilization, which it does not have. It's quite sharp and has little or no chromatic aberration that I can see. The maximum of f/2.8 should be fast enough for night photography, which I plan to learn. The only negative that I can see is the 82mm filter size. Filters are going to be pricey! Summing it up, I would buy this lens again, as well as recommending it to a friend.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Lens:

This lens is used with a Canon 5D Mk III body for shooting landscapes, interiors, and other situations where a wide angle is needed.

The lens build is of very high quality consistent with other L series lenses that I own.

As I read in other reviews while researching this lens, particularly at f2.8, a bit of vignetting does appear with the full frame camera; but, quickly disappears when stopped down.

Since I never shoot landscapes without a tripod, the lack of IS with this lens is not a consideration in that situation. With f2.8 on the wide end, shooting hand-held has also not been a problem when shooting other subjects. With good technique, you will get sharp shots.

As the number of reviews and generally high scores indicate, a lot of shooters think highly of this lens; and, my copy lives up to the high expectations. If you need an excellent wide zoom, this lens is it!
